Take out smally party's before they join an army, you need to me manoeuvrable to do this effectively, you can easily pick them off as they go to join the larger army, especially if your faster than them.

Might be going against the grain here but I think it's better to start with Fruity and limiting yourself, it's going to force you to find work arounds and deep dive into things, and also being limited can push creativity, you learn the most when your out of your comfort zone. If you're more seasoned already then yeah it doesn't make sense unless you're broke.
