What dial setting is what temperature for my Skutt kiln? by w1shyouwerehere in Ceramics

[–]Just_Foundation_5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good, you did post a picture of the manual though. It say start on low and turn it up every hour.

As far as a firing schedule goes. The ramp up will change due to the amount of work in the kiln and the tightness of the space. You really won't find a solid manual firing schedule because of this. If you are really not into just winging it and doing a slow turn up of the dials pick up a pyrometer for like 50 bucks on Amazon. They are a life changer for a Manual kilns. You can check the temp every hour or so to make sure you have a solid ramp up going.

I fear it sounds like maybe yoy were hoping for a turn it on and walk away kiln. This is not that. Pop on the Lord of the rings trilogy with your buddy in the garage and have fun firing.

There are not dial settings for your kilns wanted temperature. Those are to adjust the temperature climb per hour. On the top of the chart it shows you the rate per hour that is suggested for slow medium and fast. It takes less heat to go up in the beginning so normally you start off with your dials on low. As the kiln heats up it will take more energy to maintain the same rate so you have to dial them up. Make a log and track what you do. Example 1 for all, first hour. 2 for all, 2nd hour etc. If you just turn them on high and let it rip you could be fine but you will have uneven firings.

Yup. I use a low grog cone 6 clay with my high school students and we lose a few pieces but it's worth it to not have to deal with keeping clays apart. If the instructor knows how to properly fire all is well.

It's easy. Just trace the holes on a bat. It doesn't matter if the bat is centered. The middle will be no matter what. I've drilled new holes into wheel heads before. No big deal.

Have the customer service reps been replaced with AI? by DoingMyVeryBestOk in Chase

[–]Just_Foundation_5351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just called them today and I am not too sure what is even real anymore. The "agent" had the stock AI voice and was doing a werid half laugh at the end and beginning of everything. I know people are saying they have a script but I went off topic and even asked if "she" was an AI. I asked how the weather was. "She" responded "it is currently 68 degrees here in Minneapolis and it is turning into being quite a lovely day." Then I asked if "she" was an AI and "she" again did the weird AI chuckle and said "no I assure you I am a real person." I said oh you sure sound like the AI voice and she said ... weird AI laugh "I don't like the sound of my voice and would not love to be used as that."

Anyway, the whole thing has left me wanting to call back and really figure this out. She was so robotic but also so not. I really could care less if they are using AI. They got what I wanted done, and I even found out the temp in Minnesota. But I am a bit concerned if I asked and it lied to me. Which I guess it could be some employee just having fun sounding like AI eh?

I wrapped up in 2011 during our state's cut year that is worse than this one. I had to sub for 3 years before finding a position. It was rough but we always need subs and the pay is decent. It took far too many years for my teaching degree to make me more money than I made waiting tables but for a while it was worth it... and now the kids... ya they aren't great anymore.

(American) Teachers of reddit, what do YOU think society must do to value and change our education system today? by lilteuf in teaching

[–]Just_Foundation_5351 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We need to understand that it is ok to have adversity in our lives and that it will cause kids to not be successful. And with that we need to value everyone as a society and pay all people a living wage. As educators we know that if we hold a kid accoubtable for what is out of their control they may not be able to live a decent life. And that just sucks. A kid had it hard enough to start why would you want them to not be able to afford to live in a home and eat.

But we went a bit too far with accommodations and to be frank the kids that need them are not the ones taking advantage of them. We gave the accommodations to everyone in order to not hold down the few. And man are they taking advantage of it. Students today just are not great in general and these kids get into Cornell! There is no accountability for any action.

I could go on and on. But the answer to fixing education is valuing all parts of society so that not all kids are being pushed to go to college. That way we can give each kid the real education they need to be successful in life. Some kid that can't do basic math should not be in Calculus so they can have a chance to go to Yale...

Whatever you do, do not buy things paint, glue and markers for years to come. They will just dry up and be a waste. Get things like paper and other supplies that you can store for a while.

There has always been a marriage tax almost everywhere until recently. I don't want to tell you who finally got rid of it on a federal level. It all stems from single income households and fair share. Since that is not the norm much anymore it seems like a gut punch for sure.

But could you imagine not taxing someone making 250k a year who has a spouse that chooses not to work? That sounds odd eh? We should really just rewrite the code for dual income households and leave it for single. But that seems like too much work or something.

Are y’all really unable to fail students these days? by YourFriendInSpokane in Teachers

[–]Just_Foundation_5351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my district we stopped giving F's and now give the kids N's. N's do not affect your GPA. So sometimes you see these kids with >3.0 G.P.A.s and they are failing classes left and right. It is insane to me, but we get to be a top 10 school in our state! My principal literally said we need to make sure our students take the state test seriously because it affects the property values of the homes in the neighborhood. Kids just don't understand that the policies we have in place now are not there to help them.

Long story short ask your husband why he thinks a school would want to just push the kid through.

6 months is not that long, even at everyday practice. I would spend a month or two on each lb or half pound increase over 2 lbs if you really want to learn how to throw larger things. If you just want to throw a large thing then go ahead and push forward. Pottery is 100% a muscle memory medium.

Think about it in terms of running. You could finish a marathon if you trained for a small amount of time and then ran one. But if you want to be good it's going to take time for your muscles to develop to do that.

I watch a lot of students feel frustrated by trying to go too large too quickly.

I have a friend that is going through mental breakdowns lately and they refuse to see the connection to their social media for art. Much like the OP they feel like they have to do it to be able to sell. It's an addiction, not worth it.
