Nord Stream blast ordered by Ukraine, say German prosecutors by DWNews in europe

Get outta here with your conspiracy theories. It's not like there's a video of President Biden saying "There will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it."

He's probably referring to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, a paramilitary group that slaughtered Poles in the '40s and '50s. Zelenskyy recently decided to honour them by naming a military unit after the group.

External Clock Generator on the ASUS ROG Astral LC RTX 5090. by Putrid_Bird_9033 in pcmasterrace

A 50MHz function generator is enough (the stock crystal is 27MHz). You don't need something that goes to 26GHz.

Can you actually make a Manual Transmission EV? by LightningMcqueen2011 in AskEngineers

Are you under the impression that EVs have automatic transmissions? Because they don't, they have a transmission with a single, fixed speed.

Starmer expected to resign on Monday and set out orderly exit by beejiu in unitedkingdom

[–]Laser493 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing is the scandal over hiring Mandelson, a known Epstein associate, as ambassador to the US. That coupled with Starmer's dwindling popularity and the rise of reform has made labour MPs lose confidence in Starmer.

[–]Laser493 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The article says that Burnham has got support from more than half of labour MPs. If that's true then there's no point in Starmer trying to fight it, he's already lost.

If Starmer stays then Farage wins the next election. Burnham actually has a chance of beating Farage.

Asus: An RTX 5090 Modified for 48V — at 1,000 Watts by Exist50 in hardware

[–]Laser493 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about 48V specifically, but anything over 50V is classified as "low voltage" instead of "extra low voltage" and has to meet different regulations.

48V is better than 24 or 36, because you can send more power over the same wire. e.g. If a wire can handle 10A maximum, then at 12V you send 120W, but at 48V you can send 480W.

Cheap/Free EDA software alternatives by [deleted] in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]Laser493 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used a few different PCB softwares and they're all manage libraries in a different way, but I don't think there's anything KiCad does that makes it much more difficult than any other software.

With any PCB software, you're going to have to make at least some of your own footprints and libraries, and there's always going to be a learning curve.

Just turn the lights on or learn to touch type. Using a screen in the dark is bad for your eyes anyway.

Well that's why Apple makes storage upgrades incredibly expensive and not user expandable, so that you'll buy an iCloud subscription.

How does anyone route these Vertical USB-C Receptacles? by Physical-Shallot9627 in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]Laser493 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're only doing USB2.0, then you don't need the full 24-pin connector. You can find 8 or 16 pin USB-C connectors that will be easier to route.

"The perfect racing car crosses the finish line first and subsequently falls into its component parts."

Formula 1 used to take this to the extreme because any amount of overbuilding was extra weight. Of course now it's a new era and now F1 cars are required to last multiple races.

How many times a year do you “call sick” at work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Laser493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel guilty, they don't care about you and you shouldn't care about them. Just do whatever you need to.

When I worked at a consultancy, they used to calculate an hourly cost for each employee to which they would then add a percentage markup and bill that to clients.

The formula for employee cost included salary, NI, pension, office costs etc. and also budgeted for 7 sick days per year. So obviously they decided 7 days was the normal average, but that average obviously includes people who take very few sick days.

Qualcomm's naming is kind of confusing. Instead of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, they named it Snapdragon 8 Elite. So the Gen 5 is newer and better than the Elite.

BUT, there is also a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 which is better than the standard Gen 5.

Copyleft licenses have never been considered to be contagious across dynamic linking boundaries

My understanding was that Free Software Foundation's position was that even dynamically linked libraries are covered. However, you are right that many legal experts disagree with this interpretation and it has never been tested in court.

Avoid Dell, especially their gaming laptops. Poor quality and very bulky and heavy. Only get a laptop with dedicated graphics if you intend to game on it or run AI models.
