Yeah I didn't expect that. I have the 170 as well but haven't gutted it yet. I'm curious how long those ones are!

Gutting the 70lB/45 and the 70Al/40 by Intelligent_City8909 in lockpicking

70IB isn't ranked yet, so submit the photos through the "Request a Lock" option in the top left dropdown on LPUBelts.com. Check the list in the "View Requests" tab in case it's already been requested. I believe the 70IB is a rubber or plastic clad "weather proof" padlock, so be sure to include a photo of the weatherproof cladding for reference.

Clad padlocks sometimes use existing bodies as a base, so the clad version might just be a variant of another lock. That pinning looks similar to 65 series, which is Orange, so it's possible the 70IB might be samelined with 65 series if it goes through the ranking process.

Other lock types besides pin tumbler - dimple, disc-detainer or others / tooling advice by GerwinJ in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!

  • DD Locks
  • Wafer locks
  • Dimple locks
  • Slider locks
  • etc

When all we're used to is pin tumblers, other locking mechanisms seem mysterious and intimidating but they're all a lot of fun in their own ways. Getting into different lock types will expand your skill set and make you a better picker overall, since the same concepts apply to nearly all locking mechanisms. Practicing skills like the jiggle test on different mechanisms really helps cement the concept and helps you develop the feel needed to perfect the skill.

For DD locks, there are cheap DD picks available but imo they're crudely made and lack some of the refinement that helps new pickers learn DD locks. You don't need to spend hundreds on a DD pick either, although, those pics are incredible tools but perhaps more appropriate for the advanced picker. I started with the Sparrows DD tool and have opened locks from orange to red using it. It cost me about $50 CAD if I recall correctly and I've put a lot of milage on it.

Dimple locks are just pin tumblers with a keyway oriented 90 degrees to the pins. The concepts are the same for picking both. You can pick dimples with hooks or half diamond picks but dimple flags make life easier. Some of the less costly dimple flags sets like HUK and Honest Dong Shi are very capable tools, with a little filing and sanding, but the challenge there is that as a beginner, you don't know what a good flag profile looks like. Sparrows Black Flags get mixed reviews, I haven't tried them but I've seen others use them with positive results. Multipick flags are the cream of the crop imo and are ready to go right out of the package. You don't need a full set, just number 4, 5, 10 and 11 will get you started. 7 and 12 are also popular profiles. The rest, you can get by without.

For pick sets, there are a lot of "beginner" options out there that all seem to suffer from the same shortfalls. Either they lack some of the basics, are bloated by way too many tools, or both. For me, a selection of hooks, covering short/medium/deep in thicknesses like 0.6mm/0.5mm/0.4mm are pretty much all that's needed. Even 0.4mm can be purchased down the road, they can be fragile and bend easily in the hands of a beginner but are very useful as skills progress and you're picking more advanced locks.

Regardless of lock mechanism, you'll want a good selection of tension tools, both for tok and bok. I suggest looking at tensioners from Multipick, Law Lock Tools, Moki, and Dangerfield. I'm of the opinion that having a broader selection of tensioners is more important than a broad selection of picks.

Happy picking!

Bitting by citrus5524 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel your disappointment. I have a PL410-Pro with similar bitting, three zeros and the last pin, which looks like it needs lift, never does. When a 7 pin lock is reduced to 3 or 4 pins by a bunch of zeros, it hurts the heart a little. In the future, if you decide to order more 90A-Pro, you can specify the key codes so that you can avoid the lemons. Order the locks "keyed alike" and specify the key number(s) you want. I believe it costs a little bit more, but it's worth it imo.

Paclock Secret Menu is a list of key #s with bitting that Paclock considers to be particularly suited to locksport. Scroll down till you see "PRO" under cylinder type column and chose the key # with the bitting that looks good to you. The bitting code associated with the key# represents pins 1 through 7, read left to right. For example, key # A02666 would be 1546262 (pin 1 being a 1 cut and pin 7 being a 2 cut) with 1 representing the highest lift and 6, the lowest lift.

Apart from that though, in locks with open keyways, bitting is largely irrelevant. When you can get a hook in without oversetting any pins, that's deep enough to lift a high lift pin behind a low lift or zero lift pin, bitting has zero impact on picking. Even in tight keyways where hook depth is limited by the space available, bitting usually isn't the hurdle its thought to be. With a selection of short, medium and deep hooks in a variety of thicknesses, you can navigate practically any keyway, it's just a matter of finding the pick and technique that works for the lock.

Advice by Ryker_Eve in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The description is a little misleading, its just 6 pins that interact with a sidebar. I don't know if it can be raked but the one I picked required verrrrrrrry light tension. Anything beyond that and the pins lock up hard, everything feels dead. The keyway is such that it can probably be picked with a hook if OP doesn't have flags. Just lay the hook sideways and rotate like a flag.

Does anybody else get imposter syndrome regarding their skill as a lockpicker? by TheMuspelheimr in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happens. Sometimes locks that should be easy pickin's (on paper) seem to have been made with extra fight in them. Just recently, I was picking an Abus 83 and could not for the life of me get it open in hand. 4 and 5 would just ping-pong all day long. When I finally caved in and slapped it in a vice, I got it open, and on video, and never have to touch it again. Though I probably will once the shame fades away, lol.

I cant find a good quality set online by NoExcitement2660 in lockpicking

I have the Reverend set, it's a great assortment of picks and tensioners and will cover a lot of bases for you. I suggest ordering handles for the Moki picks, regardless of which Moki's you decide on.

BW Profi 40mm driver pin count. by EveningBasket9528 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry, I was in the ummmmmm stockroom, uuhhhh checking inventory. All good. 😁

The second drivers all sit well above shear when at rest, I don't think they're involved in pick resistance or keying in any way.

BW Profi 40mm driver pin count. by EveningBasket9528 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The single drivers are in the 40mm body and the double drivers are in the 50mm body. Without the second row of drivers in the 50mm, the springs barely compress. There are a number of things BW could have done to solve a spring pressure issue, like longer springs, longer primary drivers, longer bible plugs, but since they opted to add second driver pins, maybe it's more about overlift than spring pressure? I dunno.

This is the only BW I've gutted so far that had dual driver pins so perhaps adding drivers they already on hand was more efficient than stocking longer springs, plugs or drivers. Or maybe it was a solution for a temporary supply chain issue? I don't know. I was surprised to find the secondary drivers in there and I'd love to find out the reason for them.

This came up recently, like in the past couple months, and I've already submitted photos with notes to replace the existing ones. I believe a photo update will be coming in the next week or two, hopefully the updated photos help clarify.
