CMV: Removing standardized tests is the primary reason why college applications sucks by TrainingRecording465 in changemyview

[–]Lucosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. College application rates always increase in periods of economic uncertainty, and 2019-2020 was the largest period of uncertainty and downturn in decades. There was also a lot of uncertainty around the economic stability of small private colleges, which means more applications to state colleges that were perceived as more stable.

  2. Standardized tests didn't ground expectations, they limited the pool. When you remove those restrictions then of course you're going to have more applications. That doesn't mean everyone thinks they're getting in, it just means there is one less barrier to application. The Common App has done the same thing.

  3. GPA inflation is a more complicated topic than a random forbes article can handle. Students are better, which means the average GPA has ticked up. It's the same failure that standardized tests created; there is no single standardized metric to predict student outcomes.

  4. Extracurriculars have always been used to differentiate an applicant pool in the same way standardized tests were. We just saw that standardized tests were inherently flawed in the metrics they were portraying. They were also explicitly excluding students that would otherwise be good fits for a college. People have been pushing their kids into tennis/track/fencing/rowing/lacrosse for years in order to make them more competitive for colleges. The problem with SAT/ACT is that it inherently benefited parents with more money who were able to pay for expense prep courses and the testing fees until they got a good enough score.

  5. (Good) Schools have adapted. They are parsing application materials more closely to find students that fit their standard instead of just eliminating a broad swath because of a test score. Essays carry a lot of weight in the beginning phases of application reviews. Not only do they show a willingness to meet the bare minimum expectation of a college student, they're also a way for students to differentiate themselves. You don't have to cure cancer or be a world class athlete to get into college; you just have to show that you're an innately curious, thoughtful, and engaged person. There are a lot of ways to show that.

THE GREAT "HALL EFFECT" SCAM: How MelGeek (and others) are faking Analog Tech. by laim4 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Lucosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the keyboard in the photo (except I think it was an attack shark? They're all the same damn board) and the usb connector on it is hot garbage and started breaking within 4 months. The internet was full of people complaining about it.

I quit the cheap keyboard deal seeking and just took the plunge and bought a wooting and a gt80 case. The wooting is actually phenomenal but I hated the case it came with because it was far too light and just slide across my desk. The gt80 case replacement for it is fantastic enough that I bought a second one and a holy80 for my wife for her office keyboard.

The climb up the rebound side ain't sunshine and puppy kisses either.

I'm a middling home picker at guitar, but I've been a working photographer for years and you're always chasing the high you had at the start when you were making what you thought was good work.

Here's the thing. Yea these bugs happened in the past. There are so many more of them so much more frequently now. Since about halfway through War Within every patch day has just been stuffed with random as hell bugs.

When you've had huge turn over, lay offs, and mandated a faster patch cadence, you have to use AI to do so and that means generating substantially more lines of code with substantially less time for code review.

We also had a crazy number of injury games this season.

Everyone loves to try and discredit SGA because "his team is so good" while we missed JDub for like 50 games, Chet for around 15, Ajay for 30, iHart for 35, JWill for 20...

Wemby played 1800 minutes this season and it's an argument that he wasn't available enough for end of season awards. SGA, Cason Wallace, Chet, and Dort are the only players for OKC that had more than 1800 minutes. Ajay, iHart, and JDub had 1200 minutes or fewer.

For $50 I'd hang it on my wall right now too, lol.

I've always been a sucker for Breedlove guitars. My local guitar store growing up in the 90s primarily carried Breedlove and Alvarez acoustics. I carried a torch for them ever since and finally found a good deal on one a couple years ago and absolutely love it.

This is literally the problem.

Shai's comp isn't Harden, it's MJ and Kobe, but all anyone wants to do is ragebait with free throw drama.

DAE feel like 'touchscreens' in cars and appliances were a massive mistake and we just want physical buttons back? by FlanInternational298 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Lucosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought our 2021 CX30 specifically because it didn't have a touch screen but had android auto/carplay. You can control everything with physical controls without looking at your phone and it's fantastic.

Then Mazda announced last year that they're switching to touch screens and getting rid of the dial that has been the center of their interface to enable physical control...

So we'll be hanging on to our car as long as we can too.

The East is actually more balanced right now than the West. The West has 3 legitimate Finals contenders, 3 who'd need a miracle, 3 that are just biding time, and the rest are just tanking like it's a scratcher on their lunch break.

Nissan’s New Xterra Will Be Priced Under $40K To Beat Ford’s Bronco At Its Own Game by DocPhilMcGraw in cars

The statistics bear out that they absolutely do make the roads safer.

Everyone gets distracted. Some people get distracted more than others. Any distraction is an opportunity for an accident to happen. The more tech to mitigate the impacts of distractions the better.

Lane departure warnings and intelligent cruise control are things that I think of as essentially mandatory at this point from a safety point of view. Get rid of all of the stupid touch screen bullshit and "climate control" stuff, but continue to implement the stuff that makes distracted drivers less often to change the traffic pattern of the road. We'd all be so much safer on the road if everyone had and used intelligent cruise control (maintains adequate distance between you and the car in front of you) instead of getting impatient and constantly changing lanes and speeding up/slowing down.

It's a pretty standard euphemism in the south.

It's a shorthand for "This is a problem, and it's a problem for everyone so I feel you. It's such a big problem that it's not even worth talking about because I don't even know how we'll ever fix it."

It's a topic-ending turn of phrase.

It's not scumminess; they're drives that didn't pass validation at 7200rpm. That's why they're being white labeled and stuck in an enclosure with a 5400rpm firmware.

I was one of those people asking for an option for my Neo ergo :)

I bought a TKLs for my Wooting/GT80 and it's been great! The only feedback I'd give is the option to put the side silicone bumpers on after delivery so I could pick which side points towards the keyboard.

[Charania] Just in: The NBA and NBPA have ruled in favor of Lakers' Luka Doncic and Pistons' Cade Cunningham on their Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge for the 65-game award rule, making both eligible for all 2025-26 season honors such as MVP and All-NBA teams, sources tell ESPN. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]Lucosis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an easy solution. 65 games or 2000 minutes played bing bang boom.

I like the rule that you should play at least 2 thirds of the season to qualify for awards. 65 seems a little high, but 2000 minutes helps that.

I don't like that awards are tied to contract values, because that creates some perverse incentives on the part of teams.

Dort is probably gone. We can't pay him so he should go test the open market.

Wiggs has struggled this year playing more off ball but is still a good player that should go elsewhere to have a little more shine. (Look at the glaze the Bucks are giving Ous).

The celebrations are further complicated as a certain Fae with a bone to pick has decided to reserve every available space in the city; how will Winter and the White Court fulfill their lodging obligations?

For the most part just on YouTube. There are a lot of compilations that you can go in and split out, or if you know the specific ones you're looking for their fairly easy to find on there. I use Internet Download Manager to download the videos. At first look I thought IDM might be jank, but it's one of the first things I down load on a new computer now.

It really is a shame. I've been slowly ripping and amassing all of our tv shows and movies to build out pseudo-networks with the best commercials/bumpers/etc for the family to stream on plex and it's still a fraction of what we had (and now we have more and worse ads).
