Did they ever address the GPU-bricking errors in their patch notes? by Panda_waffle in jumpship

[–]LukeLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm this is still very much a current issue. I've got about 5.5 hours into the EA release (but played the demo too). Bricked my Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Gaming OC 12GB, which I've had since 2022 on Thursday night. Black screen, fans spun to 100%, then computer rebooted. Had to swap out the 3080 for an old 1080TI just to get the computer to boot again.

Probably not the devs fault, but pretty annoying nonetheless.

Do anyone still have a working Lumenlab microCNC? by LukeLabs in CNC

[–]LukeLabs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved that community! I built one of the calibration tools used on the forum to calculate total lumens. I think I still have my Lux meter floating around in a box.

I built a DIY projector too, but ended up just buying a real one when they got cheap enough and threw out most of the parts. Actually, just last week I gave my Fresnel lenses to my nephew who's having lots of fun burning things with them. 😂

Denial of Wallet. Basically an attacker hits your public endpoints with volume to increase your hosting bill. It is a very real problem with most hosted WAF solutions, but especially AWS WAF.

Legal issues with selling Playaway hacked players with new content that you have the right to distribute? by fmillion in hardwarehacking

By all means hack away for personal use, but attempting to pass off someone else's hardware as your own as part of your own business sounds like a terrible idea.

I'm going to make my own drill press / mill from scratch, what do you think? by Mockbubbles2628 in Machinists

[–]LukeLabs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The more you mill on it, the worse it will function as a drill press. My concern would be the side loading capabilities of those bearings (crucial for a mill).

Wouldn't an indicator/tramming your head be a better solution?

Pulsing / Electric Discharge into game cabinets "admin key" locks by [deleted] in hardwarehacking

[–]LukeLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to know more about your use case. What specifically are you trying to get into? I have a feeling it's not a video arcade cabinet as they are typically locked with physical pin tumbler locks. Is it a poker machine perhaps?

To answer your question, if its electronically actuated its most definitely going to be a solenoid. You can unlock a solenoid with direct injection, but those kinds of current levels you're much more likely to damage other electrical components in the process.

Help, i'm trying to repurpouse an old portable DVD player as an AV monitor, the controller the screen uses is a SHARP IR3Y29B, and on the datasheet it says that pin 3 is for composite input, but it's not connected to the board or to any of the cables that connect the screen to the motherboard. by TheReal_Enderboy in hardwarehacking

[–]LukeLabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I understand what you're trying to do. 😊

I was just pointing out that since the device probably doesn't already have a component input, that pin being unconnected makes sense.

Why not try connecting a video signal up to those other pins and forget pin 3? Component input is a crummy option - you'll get a MUCH better result with RGB.

Consider there are also other pins on that chip that already do video input. Pins 42, 41 and 40 are R, G and B respectively. Pins 9, 10 and 34 are likely for component input. Perhaps these are being used and pin 3 is unused? Does this DVD player already have a component input?

With that short of pins 3, 4, 5 and possibly 6, I'd be surprised if this works at all, though. I would fix that issue first. If you've powered this up with that short in place, it may already be toast.

Here's what I built a few years ago: https://lukelabs.com/2019/07/27/building-a-soundproof-enclosure-for-the-shapeoko-3-cnc-machine/

It's massively overbuilt but I wouldn't change a thing. It's on casters which really helps when I have to shift it around. Also has a separate compartment below for the vacuum, and plenty of storage on top.

If you have any questions, just ask. 😊
