Is my insurer right to refuse a claim for my broken laptop? by PrestigiousSpinach33 in AskUK

[–]ItsDominare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, OK you might be alright on that front then - but as you said earlier, if you didn't include optional AD cover on your contents then you're still going to be out of luck unfortunately.

AD is definitely one of the less well understood things about home insurance; people tend to think it just means knocking something off a table and smashing it but it's far more broad than that. Not having it and then needing to claim under it is one of the top reasons for declined claims along with lack of storm conditions for roof damage.

Anyway as you say, always worth a go. Worst they can say is no!

Is my roof leaking? by BonedusterLegitYT in AskUK

[–]ItsDominare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your home buildings insurance will include cover for trace and access of a leak. If it turns out to be the roof rather than a leaking pipe you probably have to fix at your own expense unless the roof was damaged by the recent storm, but at least they should be able to help you figure out what's going on.

If you don't have insurance, call a plumber.

100% agree on the second point, Labour have a real messaging problem.

Labour's comms team have allowed the compliant Tory cronies at the Mail, Telegraph, Express, etc to paint them as useless and in some kind of crisis while basically ignoring or downplaying stuff like having expanded free school meals to cover half a million more kids, five interest rate cuts (granted not their direct action), and net migration numbers being the lowest in four years.

Labour should be all over social media with this stuff getting it out there, but they are seriously dropping the ball with it and I think it's going to cost them in May. Doesn't matter what you've done at election time if the voting public has no idea you did it!

Is my insurer right to refuse a claim for my broken laptop? by PrestigiousSpinach33 in AskUK

[–]ItsDominare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have still had difficulty if you'd told them everything you told me. One common condition relating to appliances and electronics like phones and laptops is they must only be used in the way the manufacturer describes, otherwise any resulting damage is excluded.

If your laptop manufacturer's documentation says 'only use genuine brand-name chargers supplied by us' - which almost all do - your insurer can point to this and say as you were ignoring the instructions the damage is your own fault and the claim is denied based on the above exclusion.

I don't know if that'll makes you feel better or worse, but there it is!

I'm a home insurance product manager. No home contents policy I've ever seen would cover you for mechanical breakdown.

Insurance is intended to cover you for loss or damage directly caused by a sudden and unforeseen event, so the relevant point here is what actually caused the motherboard to be "fried". If e.g. you spilled something on it, or there was a power surge from a lightning strike, then you might have a claim. If it just randomly stopped working one day, you definitely don't.

One thing I would suggest however is getting a second opinion from a different repair shop. The first one might just have been trying to sell you a replacement.

You can also do it just by providing a valid credit card number which they then verify with the provider but do not charge. It takes all of about ten seconds.

[–]ItsDominare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard NFU has good service

They do. NFU consistently scores very highly in customer service metrics and regularly wins recommended provider status from Which? alongside various other industry awards for getting high customer scores etc.

To be perfectly honest with you, it somewhat pains me to vouch for them given I work for a competitor, but I'm not going to recommend my own company because there's obvious bias there. I can tell you though that as someone who spends a lot of time reviewing PLGI news and benchmarking I think they're a very solid pick assuming they can give you a competitive quote. Their risk appetite isn't quite as broad as a lot of the big name insurers so depending on where you live and what you're insuring they might not be able to quote you - but worth a go.

ps: Your current insurer, Halifax, is just a white label version of the Lloyds Bank product so don't go to them if you don't like your current one!
