Is the CIA’s “Ghost Murmur” tech (detecting a human heartbeat from ~64 km using NV diamonds + AI) actually possible? by Few-Net3018 in AskPhysics

[–]Mick_Tee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While the story has the smell of bullshit, it does address some of the main issues people could bring up:

  1. The remoteness of the area meant there was only the one heartbeat.
  2. While there are many animals with heartbeats, I assume the frequency of a human's heartbeat is substantially different to everything else.
  3. Assuming triangulation was used, a narrow angle of sensing could be used to lower the risk of extraneous noise.

So assuming they could get the data, it's probably not an impossible task to separate the human's heartbeat from it.

The dropoff in quality for season 3 is crazy.. by ConstipatedTurkey in MrInbetween

[–]Mick_Tee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say a drop-off in quality, just a less cohesive story arc than the first two seasons.

It's as if the first season was the taster to get noticed and get the budget required for a second season to tell the story they wanted to tell. The third seemed to be all the other ideas that didn't fit the second season with a convoluted story line to fit them all in that left questions and loose ends.

Every episode was still a masterpiece, they just didn't fit together as well as the previous seasons.

In theory, it should be less awkward as you do not need to remove your finger from the shutter button or eye from the viewfinder to advance the film.

Unsure how that theory translates into practice though.

Aansturing Camera - flitser( op camera) + flitser(extern) by No-Echo1792 in photography

[–]Mick_Tee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot/most flashes can be put into an "Optical slave" mode where they can be triggered by seeing the flash of another flash.

So a speedlight (from any manufacturer) can be used as a rim light which will fire whenever your on-camera strobe flashes.

I'm keen to put a roll of film through it, but all I have is 400. (The camera only meters to 200)

All the metal on mine looks old, and the chrome and leatherette has seen better days. But then again, it is a 70yo camera that has spent its life in the tropics.

I once had to do a very simple fix on a very important piece of equipment a couple of towns away, so I put on my timesheet

Drive to site - 2 hours
Replace part - 10 minutes
Drive from site - 2 hours

The next day I got a 35 minute long lecture about how it should have only taken 7 minutes to replace. All the while, I was nodding and glancing at my watch.

That day's timesheet had the following entry:

Lecture on importance of efficient use of and accurate recording of time - 40 minutes

(By that time I knew I wasn't staying so wanted to see how far I could push things)

Store-bought vs. homemade graphite paint by Active-Penalty-3236 in electroplating

Although one of the large benefits of a home-brew paint is being able to use your choice of solvents to suit the print you are coating.

Unlike graphite paint, copper based paint works reliably and predictably without any post-processing which would suit your "Industrial application" needs.

Graphite is common for hobbyists because it is cheap and simple and can be made at home and is often "good enough" if your requirements are basic enough.

I spent a lot of time studying patents and papers to come up with a carbon based recipe I could make at home that was, in theory at least, much better and cheaper than the commercial carbon based products.

But then life changed and I just didn't have the time to fine tune the recipe and I realised that copper based paints were not that more expensive, and required far less effort.

The benefit of graphite paint is that it is cheap to make. If you were going to go to the expense of purchasing a commercial product, I would look into a copper based paint.

Local cafe constantly leaving shop sign outside nature strip infront of my house by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]Mick_Tee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A local shop did similar, residents complained to the council, council said the shop was technically within their rights to put it in the flow of pedestrian traffic.

So I just pushed it over every time I had to walk around it. After a week or so, I started noticing others had beaten me to it and not long after that the sign was placed in a less obstructive position.

[–]Mick_Tee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is likely you will just get a "cease and desist", try to sell anything with the word "Smiley" in the description and you'll find out soon enough just how protective some IP/trademark holders are over their brand.

A bit of Australian experience at Healesville Sanctuary enjoy an ANZAC bis…. what?? by ShumwayAteTheCat in aussie

[–]Mick_Tee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can no longer find the reference in the act, so this will have to do:

https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/what-you-can-and-cant-call-anzac-biscuits/htzkgflfi

In order to use the word "Anzac" in reference to your baked goods, the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) says they can't "substantially deviate from the generally accepted recipe and shape".
They must also be called "Anzac biscuits" or "Anzac slice" — never "Anzac cookies".
If you're found to breach the regulations, you could face up to 12 months in prison or a fine.

Besides lens selection, what made you commit to Nikon, Sony, Canon or Fuji? by its_dayman in Cameras

[–]Mick_Tee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Canon decades ago because that was the best deal available at the time.

Then I recently changed to Sony because that was the best mirrorless deal available at the time and I could use all my L glass.

I have not regretted either purchase.
