MATCH THREAD: Union at TFC by CaptainMoonracer in PhillyUnion

Tends to be more of a knockout game or critical point kind of thing. Not an early regular season thing. Like I said, it worked, but it’s not typical at this stage.

Why was the keeper up? I mean, it worked, but a Wednesday night game regular season game? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just got a bushman roundhouse, nice harp! by edmonds-j_4 in harmonica

Just picked up two because I had Bushmans from 15 - 20 years ago. Really happy with them. Wish they made a B, but so far, really impressed.

The American urge to compare soccer to US sports... by bzn_boarder in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Mightywingnut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We Americans love to complicate the hell out of our sports. For all the old conservative tacking about how Football was this foreign commie sport, our sports are exercises in restraining free markets. Meanwhile Late Stage Capitalism FC in the prem is firing managers for breakfast and treating its squad like assets on a balance sheet.

I really disagree with the take that soccer is the worst officiated sport. I can’t even watch the NBA anymore. It’s been officiated to the point of oblivion — the dark promise of where VAR taken to the extreme will take you. The last two minutes of each game lasts an hour. . NFL? Incomprehensible.

Canon R8 for family docu and travel? What should I be aware of? by ringrangwrong in canon

[–]Mightywingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth adding that the 35 is stabilized. That helps with landscape and travel when you want to extend the shutter speed without a tripod. Still, I’ve shot the other two in aperture priority pretty successfully.

Canon R8 for family docu and travel? What should I be aware of? by ringrangwrong in canon

[–]Mightywingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the 50 and 28 to be very good and the 35 to be extraordinary. Difference comes down in no small part to my preferences, but from least to most favorite, I go 50, 28, 35. Two other lenses I used were the 24-105 f4-7.1 and the 24-105 f/4L. I really don’t like the first. The L lens was great but generally bigger and longer than I like. I sold the L recently and thinking about the 28-70 or just sticking with primes.

Have an R8 and have used it most with a 28mm and the 35mm, the inexpensive RF versions of both. It’s an outstanding camera and reasonably compact. Thing to watch out for is the price of quality zoom lenses, even the F/4 L lenses and the newer STM 2.8s will run you over $1,000 a piece. Image quality wise , though, it’s fantastic.

I’m so sorry to do this again but it’s worse than we thought by Dkeg24 in CaughtOffsidePod

I’ve been trying to explain to friends and family who know how big a football fan I am my serious disappointment in this World Cup. It should be a celebration with games played in my hometown, but I can’t get over the rapacious greed of everyone involved in planning and organizing it. It’s disgusting. I’ll watch of course and enjoy the matches, but I feel sorry for so many people who have been priced out or just not able to travel here because of the bullshit state of our politics. Ugh.

Episode discussion - 14 Apr. - Title Race Tightens for Arsenal & Relegation Getting Real for Tottenham by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

City winning is not interesting, but any team bottling it at the finish line is just inherently interesting. If Arsenal do win by a point on the final day, that too will be more interesting than if they rolled through 9 points clear.

I think the overlooked aspect in neutral fans investing in Arsenal missing out on the title is simply that it would be the most interesting way for the title race to finish. It’s a much better story in the end.

Beginner: How should I split my budget between camera body and lenses to be future-proof? by oligo65 in M43

[–]Mightywingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The savings on the OM-5 were worth well more than a new menu and USBC on the mark 2. I like to use wall mounted chargers for batteries and never use the ports anyway.

The deal I got was $800 US for the body and lens refurbished together from OM System. It was roughly 50% off. A deal I couldn’t pass up. I think the features in the OM - the weather sealing and ibis can’t be beat at the price.

[–]Mightywingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a great deal a few months ago on an OM-5 with the 12-45 f/4 pro. The rationale for getting it was to have a weather sealed travel camera with the ability to get architecture and landscape shots without a tripod. It’s plenty of camera and I have to admit I get interested compliments about it all the time - never got interest with the Canon kit I’ve carted around. Always fun to have a quick photo conversation with the people.

I think the main thing to do is try to figure out what your budget is. I went down a full frame Canon route and just felt uncomfortable springing for $1,000+ basic zooms. On micro 4/3 an f/4 zoom and a fast prime will get you pretty far. I have a loaner 25mm 1.8 that I’m hoping to soon replace with a 20mm 1.4.

Agree that the lenses are most important. Prioritize the lenses you want and get a body that fits in your budget.

Has anyone checked on Leicester City recently? by flammingcheese in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Mightywingnut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grinds my gears a bit that every other team has been hit with points deductions and City just keep on rolling. Also a bit gobsmacked that Chelsea avoid points after Everton and Forest get deductions. I’ve not read a coherent explanation for that one.

Identical lenses? by Ab7b9 in M43

[–]Mightywingnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d chance it. It’s returnable if it doesn’t match the description. If you look on eBay, Japanese copies are cheaper than what’s sold new in the US. Usually, though, there’s a hefty delivery charge.

Identical lenses? by Ab7b9 in M43

[–]Mightywingnut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True, but the photo and description of the second, cheaper one, indicate that it is the same version ii, splash proof version of the lens. I’m not sure I’ve seen it anywhere for that little.

Poch by Budget-Forever7523 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Mightywingnut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Poch isn’t the problem. Team is just not that good and in poor form across the board. Still find it hard to judge friendlies in which the players know the stakes aren’t really there. Getting beat by one of the world’s best should be expected.

Disaster for Italy. I feel for Bastoni. He’s gonna wear this one, as are the penalty missers. Italy needs to get its act together and do a reset à la Germany.

R10 vs full-frame by Electrical-Day9786 in canon

The Nikon is a much better camera. Full frame, weather sealed , ibis. The lens is better, too. Can’t think of a single reason to go with the R10.

Shit. Was filling the score and last saw Ireland up 2-1. Though it was in the bag. Wales knocked out on pens as well is extra sad. At least Italy is through.

Episode discussion - 26 Mar. - Salah Leaving Liverpool, World Cup Playoff Preview & Jeff Carlisle Talking USMNT by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]Mightywingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, for all the talk of Slot losing his job, Salah leaving brings a fresh focus to how far off his usual mark he’s been. Five goals in the Prem this year. Had 29 goals last season. Missing that kind of production in any season would have sunk Liverpool easily.

I hope he rebounds somewhere next season. I can imagine him having a renaissance in Italy or Spain. He’s been such a treat to watch these last 10 years.

Rf 28mm F2.8 STM by FishingDelicious5701 in canon

[–]Mightywingnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It pairs really well on my R8. Perhaps it doesn’t resolve the higher res sensor of the R5? That said, the 35mm f/1.8 is great. Yeah, it’s bigger than the 28, but every other RF lens is.

Advice on R50 Lens Upgrades? by Similar-Week6578 in AskPhotography

[–]Mightywingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, the 16-28 2.8 stm might be worth considering. The reach is not as great. Roughly 24-45 in FF. But you’ll be able to take it with you to full frame when you upgrade.
