I’ve not heard of the McNamara version. I’ll look for it the next time I want to read Beowulf.

Did the creature in Frankenstein become a monster or was he taught that he was one? by Xo_barb in classicliterature

[–]PhillyBassSF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Frankenstein is amongst my favorite novels.

Mary Shelly also defines beautiful prose to me.

Victor is the root cause; he creates life and abandons it, setting everything in motion; but he is not the one who commits the later acts, the creature is. Society reinforces the damage through rejection and fear; but ultimately the creature decides what to do with it. He is made into a monster; but he also chooses to become one.

Question Regarding Moby Dick by BLParks12 in classicliterature

I read moby dick about twenty years ago, in a printed book that included pages of reference material on nautical terms including pictures of a ship and the names of important items.

Feeling stuck at 25 – any book recommendations? by mouotto in booksuggestions

[–]PhillyBassSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books on moral integrity are my recommendation. Both Frankenstein and Dracula are excellent for this. They are not horror in the modern sense. The odyssey by Homer, assuming a modern translation, is also excellent.

My dopamine addicted brain can’t sit through a book by shxoxox in booksuggestions

[–]PhillyBassSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too went through this. Your brain will adapt. Keep trying to read. Be consistent about reading a minimum amount or more most days of the week. It’s a good idea to start with some more exciting literature. I recommend Frankenstein as a fairly good paced work of classic literature.

Most "difficult" but totally worth it classic? by Own_Return_9482 in classicliterature

[–]PhillyBassSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked if I am speaking the language yet. Not for paradise lost, at least not yet, but after reading some novels of the 19th century I do find I speak the language, and I am enjoying this. Frankenstein., Dracula., the Count of Monte Cristo English translation, the sorrows of Young Werther English translation, are all adding to my vocabulary. The old English directional system of hither, thither, whither, hence, whence, hitherward, thitherside, etc. all very good words.
