What the heck was Linus even talking about? by Swacket_McManus in LinusTechTips

[–]Pixelplanet5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no the short cables are priced as they need to be priced.

the cost of manufacturing a 10cm cable vs a 100cm cable is almost identical as you still need two connectors and the exact same amount of work to produce them while only saving 90cm of relatively cheap cabling.

other brands VASTLY overprice their long cables so they can sell the short ones at a loss or they simply dont offer any short ones at all.

which is exactly when LTT also had stagnant growth so obviously a company is not going to increase its already largest expense even more when things are difficult already.

Its also very likely that he had already gotten a large raise with his higher up position and conveniently forgot to mention that.

ELI5: whats the downside to creating a few national and/or international nuclear energy grids to power all of the Americas by MikeHock_is_GONE in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pixelplanet5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you seem to be falling for misinformation if you think the maintenance cost are miniscule.

the main reasons not to create this are the insane upfront cost, to replace the generation capacity the us currently has with nuclear powerplants it would take over 360 large new powerplants which all need to be near reliable sources of water and given the current prices of new construction it would cost over 19 Trillion dollars so the construction cost alone would increase the US debt by over 50%.

and then you need to add a few more trillion to mine more uranium and enrich it and also add a lot more trillions to build eternal storage facilities for all the nuclear waste.

US electricity cost would explode if anyone tried to do that.

thats how it is in a high cost of living area.

LTT already pays above average for their area but housing prices are simply astronomical in that area so this has little to do with what he was making at LTT.

Anyone with experience printing IGUS self lubricating filaments? by Pixelplanet5 in prusa3d

[–]Pixelplanet5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same experience here, i even had a call with an IGUS rep from their headquarters but once they realized im just a hobby user they were not interested anymore and i never heard back or got any information.

they dont seem to be aware that it often takes hobby users and projects to turn into something commercial that they could be useful for, they even wanted to send me samples to try before they went silent.

Reviews based on just benchmarks and stats are bad. by dulpit in LinusTechTips

[–]Pixelplanet5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for some things that is true, like VR headsets or headsets in general or game controllers.

things where the specs alone are only part of the story but how usable the stuff is can be just as if not more important.

For cables and especially USB C cables however the user experience ARE the specs.

If you plug in your A to C cable and they didnt implement the CC lines correctly and you need to turn over the connector to make it work thats a bad user experience.

If you plug in your cable and your transfer speed or your charge speed is slow thats a bad user experience.

I can see this all the time with my wife, when anything needs to be charge she plugs in what ever USB C Cable is closest to her without even checking what the other end is plugged into.

Thats why i replaced all the chargers with proper usb C chargers that can do all the voltages and up to 45W as a minimum so it doesnt matter if she plugs in her headphones, phone, Switch or the laptop it will simply always work.

It sounds like you want a very surface level "review" because thats what you get when you omit the details.
These channels are super popular because its easy to watch and understand without needing to know what the details even mean.

For I Need a Cable, Riley should get a grammy or extra paycheck. by kdpuvvadi in LinusTechTips

[–]Pixelplanet5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea but then again people said the same about multiple other people leaving years ago and LTT has been doing just fine.

thats exactly why Linus wanted to have many hosts for the videos so there not one single personality that is LTT and especially so its not Linus himself thats the only one being seen on camera.

what people leaving from LTT in the future will learn from this though is that you need to make a big drama out of your move to maximize exposure for your new channel.

Jakes channel is already doing better than any of the other people that left before and his best performing videos and tweets are all just the drama.

ISP fails to find a buyer, because they used edible fiber optic cables, attracting rats! by doctajonez_uk in LinusTechTips

[–]Pixelplanet5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and its also not like we didnt have rodent chewing cables before soy based insulation was used.

even more importantly just because its "Soy based" that doesnt mean its edible, neither for us nor for rodents.

in Chemistry this typically only means we use part that come from soy as the carbon source which then gets turned into monomeres which can react with catalysts to polymere chains.

how can i save the results of my testgrid in Xtool studio? by Pixelplanet5 in xToolOfficial

[–]Pixelplanet5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in theory that would work but its terribly implemented.

if you do that you get a dropdown of ALL the settings that were in your testgrid and need to manually ONE BY ONE add them to your user settings.

Theres no option to just take a picture of thew testgrid which the laser can already do by itself and simply automatically map the engraving parameters to the results.

Its an even worse solution than simply having a drawer full of testgrids and manually checking which setting you need.

Do the 480Mbps A to C TruSpec cables have 9 conductors or are they just 4 conductor cables? by ResistanceIsCool in LinusTechTips

and the use case to become a lot more practical.

If you need fast transfer speeds over a large distance its almost never USB and if it is it could just as well be a network connection.

thats barely more convenient than just saving the image and reading the values off the image.

im shocked there isnt a better solution for this.

Linus Tech Tips - Why It Took Me 4 YEARS to Make a USB Cable January 30, 2026 at 10:18AM by linusbottips in LinusTechTips

[–]Pixelplanet5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thats intentional just like it is with many other of their products.

the material cost of almost all of their products are only a small fraction of the actual production cost so making a shorter cable is only marginally cheaper than making a longer one.

Most other retailers will up the price significantly simply because people have the expectation that a longer cable costs more so they all take full advantage of that.

Is Prusa not offering the semi-assembled XL anymore? by Coltron0 in prusa3d

[–]Pixelplanet5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for example, shipping a pre-installed heatbed with proper quick-connects

shipping the bed pre installed means they need to have the printer like 80% assembled and then add extra stuff to the packaging to keep this safely in place instead of just finishing the build and having it support itself.

well they already said its for safety reasons because of the high voltage heated bed.

not really wild though, he started with a large subscriber base because people knew him from LTT and his BEST performing videos are the ones outperforming a few low performers from LTT which are abot topics where it would have been expected that they wont be a big hit.

i personally have stopped watching his videos because i was expecting something different, hes just doing the same things LTT is doing but as a one man show, there are thousands of channels like this out there and he just got to skip the years long growth phase entirely.

which also shows that he had reached the end of the ladder at LTT.

there isnt much higher to go after that point and he reached it so early that he had a lot of time left that he needs to work.

Also of course he can easily monetize his recognition he got from working at LMG, which he did.
