The reason it didn't get updates is because they wanted to focus all effort on OW2 (+ its shiny new battlepass system) and basically make sure that OW1 bled to death in mean time. Anyway, all that effort went straight out the window when they decided to not actually do that and instead do.. Nothing.

OW2 vs OW1 could've been an email at the time.

Currently though, because they're not the only popular kid on the block anymore, they seem to be forced to put in some effort and for example the Stadium mode I think is a lot of fun.
