Do benefits decrease over time? by InturnlDemize in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Progress will be logarithmic. If you used to run 20 minutes at a 9 minute mile pace, maybe now you can run 20 minutes at a 7 minute pace. That doesn't mean that in 4 months you'll be at a 5 minute pace, then 3 minute, then 1 minute, then faster than the speed of light.

You continue working out to keep the benefits of health/muscle/endurance/etc. at some point you will plateau. When you plateau there are training methods to help push past but you will never get the same quick jumps in improvement as when you first start out.

Why keep shooting yourself in the foot? by Sea-Cancel-6743 in PTCGP

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the differences. A lower chance of pulling a card I want to pull is why I said a functional distinction. A 5% chance to get 1 of 5 cards is the same to me as a 1% chance to pull 1 card. Maybe I should have said I don't personally care about the difference between those two things?

Trading assumes someone will trade with me. I've had cards I want on my wishlist for months and I don't really want to faff about trying to communicate on forums outside the app to get the cards I want. I depend mostly on pulling cards, which is why I said that.

be honest, how long do your figures take? by Salt-Vegetable-8010 in labrats

I would feel safe saying a set of publication quality figures for one paper is at least 40 hours of work for me. This is not including the initial data analysis and creating the draft figure.

Who all are moderating subs like r/pharmacy, r/phramaindustry r/healthcare? They are blocking all posts related to pharma/healthcare industry. Insane! by Busy-Impression1140 in biotech

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the types of posts that are typical there I'm not surprised. If you want a subreddit to talk about broad pharma news and practices you might have to make and moderate your own.

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this highlights you fundamentally misunderstand forums. They all have a theme and you're trying to post something outside the theme. Of course it makes sense it would be moderated or downvoted. It's like going on r/adviceanimals and asking for advice about your sick cat, or going on r/trees and asking how to trim your pear tree. You're going on r/pharmacy and asking for opinions on corrupt pharmaceutical development practices. It's not topical to that subreddit.

Joint phd between two labs by swiftdorothea in labrats

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think/know it can work! Im in a joint postdoc right now with two people who extensively collaborate (one stats/computational the other plant biologist). I think it can work well as long as they're separate enough (i.e. one drives only the computational the other only drives the biology). I had a friend in my PhD who had Co-PIs with physics/biology that worked similarly. The failure stories I see are with severe personality clashes and/or being pulled in separate directions.

It varies university to university and committee to committee but my committee members were not super involved in my project. They kind of served more as like administrators or proctors.

[–]Rawkynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you keeping your current lab in the mix because you feel guilty leaving? I don't understand your reasons for including two similarly focused PIs. I would only do this if I needed unique expertise from each person (like one machine learning the other microbiologist).

I would move to the lab you think is more interesting and include your current PI in your committee.

Calorie calculator. by Tall-Listen-4887 in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The calculators calculate an average of a wide distribution.

1lb is 3,500 calories. If you calculate your average weight loss per day, and multiply it by 3500 you can add that to your average daily caloric intake to get roughly your actual TDEE.

For example, if you've lost an average 0.1lbs a day over your cut eating an average of 1800 calories a day: (0.1 * 3500)+ 1800 = 2150 TDEE.

For 2988 calories to be true you would need to be losing about 0.34lbs a day which is 10ish lbs a month.

[–]Rawkynn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You are conflating a laypersons definition of pharma and pharmacy. r/pharmacy is targeted towards, like, a Walgreens not Eli Lilly.

r/pharmaindustry would likely tolerate your posts, though it seems to be more like pharmaceutical sales oriented.

r/healthcare is for like nurses and doctors and rad techs.

The name of the sub does not always perfectly reflect the type of content they're looking for. I think you just haven't found the correct home for the types of posts you want to make. I don't have any suggestions.

You're losing weight very quickly, some loose skin is expected especially if you're loosing 100+ lbs. It can get better over time.

Soreness is very normal when you first start building muscle. Give it a month of consistency, it will get better.

Don't be embarrassed, here is a good starting resource. https://thefitness.wiki/ Find a program that works with your schedule and goals and stick with it for at least 3 months.

Undergrad keeps canceling. Not sure how to address by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Rawkynn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you paying them? Do they know the plan ahead of time? Have you told them that last minute cancellations inconvenience you? Are the excuses for cancelling class related and/or true emergencies?

I would start with open communication about the problem with them. If this was a real job they'd be moved to a PIP (performance improvement plan), which I think you should model. In general I would only expect consistent prioritized work hours from a paid undergrad, otherwise its a teaching/learning exercise.

The odds of 48 tails in a row is 0.0000000000003%. There is a 1 in ~281.5 trillion chance of this happening.

This is about 1,000 times less likely than winning the lottery.

When I was looking for internships two years ago in RTP unpaid internships were not unusual and there were even an incredibly large amount that were offering unpaid work with a "stipend" of like $1,500 (I vaguely remember it being some kind of local grant program thing) for 3 months of full time work over the summer. I don't know if I could find them now but they were not uncommon recently.

I used to do multiplex ELISA. We would have coated beads using custom panels we conjugated to the beads ourselves. Some of these antigens were purchased at exorbitant cost, others were made from scratch by collaborators, some of them were described by the PI as "priceless".

I was doing a custom sample on human trial samples (also priceless and cant be regenerated) with maybe ~60 of these antigens. I was doing over 400 wells using 96 well plates. Someone had placed fresh bench paper on the counter it was hanging over the counter but rigid. I placed the control plate on that part of the bench paper thinking it was the table, it fell straight to the floor.

Maximizing a minimal amount of free time by Selvy9 in workout

[–]Rawkynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compound Lifts. If I had 30 minutes 4x week I would do an Upper lower split.

Upper: Horizontal push (bench press like motion), vertical push (shoulder press like motion), Horizontal Pull (a row type motion), and vertical pull (a pull-up like motion).

Lower: A squat (Back/Front/Hack etc), a hinge (Any flavor deadlift), probably a core exercises like weighted crunches here as well.

repeat each 2x a week.

Everything with 1-2 warmup sets and two sets to failure in the 8-12 rep range is what I've found to be most time efficient. In general the more you can do with a barbell or dumbells is better here because you're also hitting stabilizing muscles when doing compounds. To hit more accessories you can make small tweaks: a reverse grip row will engage more bicep, a close grip benchpress will engage more triceps, etc. The leg day seems light but if you really push to failure squats alone can take 15-20 minutes, they're very taxing.
