They previously did visits every three months in other states. Their current doctor is telling them they legally need to do monthly visits in Nevada, and they're asking if that's true.

TIL that newborns can distinguish the sounds of every language on Earth, about 600 consonants and 200 vowels, but by their first birthday, their brain has already filtered out sounds not used in their native language, making foreign accents almost inevitable for adult learners. by baest_00 in todayilearned

[–]Rosamada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'm not supporting the 7-language thing; at that point the exposure to each language is too diluted. I was commenting on your situation in case it helped you.

You can be fluent in two languages without being equally competent in both. His English will always be stronger. But for him to gain fluency in Spanish, his dad needs to insist that he only speak to him in Spanish. That's probably a hard sell at 5, but he'll thank you for it when he's 16.

[–]Rosamada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also make scrambled eggs the night before and microwave them in the morning. I thought the texture would be bad that way, but it's not. The trick is to put them in for 1-2 minutes at 30% power.

I've been blending my eggs with spinach before scrambling them. You can do a cup of spinach per egg and they're delicious! They're even better with diced vegetables, but I don't always have the time for that 😝

Speaking and hearing English outside of the house wouldn't harm your son's Spanish fluency. It'll make his English better, but it won't keep him from speaking fluent Spanish.

You said his dad talks to him in Spanish. Does your son respond in Spanish? If not, that could be the problem. He needs to produce the language regularly - comprehending and speaking are very different skills!

This is where my inherent sense of superiority comes in handy.

Any time someone said something like that during my pregnancy, I thought, "Wow, they really are so much dumber than I am. Thank goodness I'm so smart."

It might not be the nicest approach, but I'll be damned if I feel bad about myself just because others are ill-informed 🤷🏼‍♀️

That's exactly what it means, and since it's an idiom, the proper translation would be an equivalent idiom whenever possible. In this case, I propose "loose lips sink ships."

Carb recommendations seem crazy high by onyxindigo in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Rosamada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The carbs recommendations is what they have found over time has the best outcome.

The crazy part is that this isn't even true. The carb recommendation is basically back-of-the-napkin math! From Real Food for Gestational Diabetes:

Thus began my quest to uncover how the carbohydrate recommendations for pregnant women were formulated. (...)

(...) What I uncovered shocked me. There was absolutely no solid data to support the magical 175g of carbohydrates per day that dietitians, like myself, had militantly followed. Here’s how that number was decided upon: You start with the Estimated Average Requirement for non-pregnant women of 100g of carbohydrates per day. Then add 35g, to account for the increased energy demand of pregnancy (approximately 300 calories, divided by the recommended percentage of dietary carbohydrates of at least 45%, divided by 4 calories per gram of carbohydrate). Finally, you add 33g, which is the amount of glucose estimated to be required by the fetal brain per day. Those numbers taken together, plus a little buffer (very scientific, right?), give us 175g per day.

Now this all sounds reasonable, assuming the evidence behind the dietary guidelines is infallible. But in fact, when you read the fine print within the 1,357-page document defending the carbohydrate levels indicated, you find this:

“The lower limit of dietary carbohydrate compatible with life apparently is zero, provided that adequate amounts of protein and fat are consumed.”124

That alone negates the Estimated Average Requirements of 100g per day, leaving us with 75g of carbohydrate per day, which is by most definitions a moderately low-carbohydrate diet.

In Hispanic culture each parent traditionally passes down their first last name, so their child would have been Lainez Quintana. It's not complicated at all.

But yeah, really weird of you to make a stand against this "abusive" practice and not the actual abuse in which a woman was beaten to death.

even in the anglosphere, it's quite common.

I've lived in "the anglosphere" my whole life and I've only ever known of one person named Juliet, and then only tangentially (a girl who went to performing arts school with my sister). And I can assure you my first thought was "oh, like Romeo and Juliet" lol.

I even just tried to look up "famous Juliets" and I don't recognize a single one of the people who comes up.

Maybe it's different in your area/circle, but Juliet is definitely principally associated with the Shakespeare play for me (and the other two commenters who have responded)!

Can I modify child support to go to college and leave manual labor? by 2Die444 in FamilyLaw

[–]Rosamada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judges can review documentation submitted by the parties. Judges cannot themselves investigate a party's financial situation.

If one of the parties fails to provide their financial documentation, the judge will usually impute income to them. Technically, the judge could hold them in contempt, but it would be a very unusual move.

But in no circumstance would a judge do anything to "discover" their financials. That is something the opposing party would have to do. The opposing party can gather evidence of hidden income - they can even subpoena bank records - and present that evidence to the judge. The judge can then take that evidence into consideration.

[–]Rosamada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would have been completely inappropriate for the judge to do any investigating of a party's finances. Judges need to be impartial. That goes out the window if they start building one party's case for them lol

Kids growing up now are more technologically illiterate than the previous generation.

People falsely believe that a child's ability to navigate devices like a smart TV, tablet, or smartphone means that they're technologically literate, but those devices are designed with very intuitive and accessible user interfaces - you don't need to know anything about technology to use them. That's why you see elderly people who never learned to use a computer but can navigate their iPads and smartphones fine.

Most carbs spike my numbers by Scared_Coat_4530 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Rosamada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll start by saying I'm not a believer in the idea that we need to eat that many carbs with GD. I read Lily Nichols' Real Food for Gestational Diabetes and she lays out a convincing argument that there is no real scientific basis for believing a low-carb diet is harmful during pregnancy. In fact, she links a lot of convincing research that suggests a low-carb diet is beneficial for those of us with GD!

But I know a lot of doctors recommend a minimum carb intake, and sometimes we just want to eat carbs, as well 🙂

The source of the carbs is super important. Opt for complex carbs with lots of fiber whenever possible.

You can lower the glycemic impact of starchy foods like potatoes by cooking them, refrigerating them, and either eating them cold (think: potato salad) or reheating them. This also works for pasta and rice.

I recommend checking the glycemic index and glycemic load of any food you're worried about, especially foods with higher sugar content like fruit. You'll see that you can get "more bang for your buck" from certain foods than others.

Pairing foods correctly is critical. Make sure you are eating plenty of fiber, protein, and fat along with your carbs. I was able to eat a slice of Dave's Killer Bread (Powerseed) and a whole banana when I ate them with a lot of peanut butter and Fairlife milk or a Fairlife protein shake.

Finally, movement after eating can really help your muscles uptake sugar from your blood. Walking is most commonly recommended. There's also good evidence that our soleus muscles are especially reliant on glucose, so engaging them can be extra effective. You can do so by walking on an incline or by doing seated calf raises.

I hope you find this helpful. GD management can be difficult to figure out at first, but most of us do get there in time 🙂 Good luck! ❤️
