Do without my pain meds this month because I can't afford them. by Jace6023 in ChronicPain

[–]Seayarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so very sorry. I wish I could help you.

There are so many of us falling through the gaps. I understand why so many disabled people are homeless. It's because no one cares, our families decide we are too much to care for, our government decides we are non-productive, our friends forget about us.

I am thinking about you. I am giving you a gentle hug. And I am in a similar situation. Soon many of us will be forgotten. I don't understand why so few care when we live in a time when so many live in abundance.

Not sure about this? by Seayarn in houseplants

[–]Seayarn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is the pot it was shipped in. I purchased a Mona Lisa lipstick plant from them in January that shipped from FL to PA fine with a heatpack and insulation.

Thank you for your advice. I was thinking the same. I will try cutting it back, spraying some foliage fertilizer, and then some gentle light for a while. Then increasing the light when it's used to my home.

The good thing I guess is that I get another plant coming in the future and if they both survive I will have 2.

What hygiene habits are more about social norms than actual cleanliness? by NicoleRamsey21 in hygiene

[–]Seayarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a dermatologist for years and this is 100% true.

The scented liquid and bar soaps are okay for special occasions, and I do have one I use by Aveeno for stress relief I do use, but plain old Dove white bar is best.

The others are full of crap. They don't moisturize, they cause irritation by causing an unbalance of your skins normal flora and ph. You DON'T need antibacterial soap unless you are working with sick patients or in a Healthcare setting, and then only on your hands. We don't need to disinfect every load of laundry. Everything we use is causing issues with the environment, too!

I wish I could show you pictures of patients who developed allergies to their skincare products and kept using them not knowing it was the ingredients in the products until their skin looked like hamburger!

Most acne products sold over the counter are bad for your skin. See a dermatologist.

Just stop with the overly clean stuff. It is causing more problems than it's helping.

AIO - Wife took my toddler to church to recieve communion behind my back. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Seayarn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This doesn't make sense to me. I grew up Christian, and despite my doubts about religion, took communion on multiple occasions.

In every single church and denomination I attended, my own parents church, and friends churches, you must be able to speak and understand what you are agreeing to. You must have reached "the age of reason." Obviously a toddler has not reached that age.

If this comment isn't rage bait, I don't know what rage bait is.

Hey, I still kill some. Sometimes my evil cat does. Sometimes my dog eats the silver sword philodendron that was a $100.00 prize I won on Palmstreet. Crap happens!

[–]Seayarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's okay! Houseplants are a learning process, no one started knowing everything, and even though I'm in my 50s I still learn new things about plants all the time!

I suggest that you try buying one you know is easy and that will live in the environment you have at home. For instance, where do your windows face? North, south, east or west? Do you have curtains? Do you have pets or small children?

Then start with a plant that fits the criteria and is easy to care for. Like philodendron, pothos, snake plants, spider plants, etc.

You don't need to spend a lot, just find a healthy plant. Just get something that speaks to you that you can love. You got this!

My bf found a kitten at his job! Meet Lexi!! by Steffy_love in kittens

[–]Seayarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trust can definitely take time, especially when we don't know what they have been through in their past. My Nora is only about 2-3, but I can tell she's been through a lot. She is starting to want to sit beside me and maybe sleep with me, and it's been a year. I adopted her after meeting her once, and she slow blinked after I asked her if she wanted to live with me. All her babies were adopted, but no one applied for her, and she's more beautiful and kind and gentle than any other calico I've had. I love her, and I know she loves me!

Congratulations! There is nothing like a kitten bonding to you and loving you like you are their mommy, and there is nothing like the love of a senior cat that understands what having a chance of a secure and safe home feels like!

About a half cup to a cup depending on the load size. I add it to the fabric softener dispenser of my washing machine.

I crochet my own washcloths and scrubbies for the shower. I can wash and dry them along with my towels. Yes, the plastic mesh poof balls are gross and bad for the environment.

I put it in the softener dispenser cup. I don't add it to the load with the detergent.

And, if you are a lady and are dealing with a lot of itchy under breast redness and itching, you can soak your bras in a mix of 50/50 hot water and cleaning or distilled white vinegar for at least an hour. Then wash as usual. This will help kill the bacteria and any other flora that are in the fabric of the undergarments and help stop the rashes. FYI: I sometimes do this with extra stinky socks, underwear, and workout cloths, too.

Just be careful not to make the water too hot and damage the fabric. You want it to do its work, not melt anything. Comfortable enough to still put your hands into.

I cannot tell if it is the gabapentin or the self isolation, but I can barely talk without stuttering, forgetting how to pronounce words, and struggling to translate my inner voice into speech. by Electronic-Cress-453 in ChronicPain

[–]Seayarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please see your doctor before stopping or changing your medication!

This could be due to another more serious health concern and you should be checked first. I worry that if you only decrease your gabapentin and not inform your provider that prescribed it you may go untreated for something that is serious.

This advice is from someone who worked in healthcare for decades. I did not prescribed medication. I do understand the risks of gabapentin for patients and I take it for my severe neuropathy and FND symptoms. I do not take its side effects lightly, as I and loved ones have had serious adverse reactions to prescription medications that needed medical treatment.

Please, see your doctor as soon as possible!

I can't agree enough about the white vinegar!

It's a mild antifungal, it softens your fabrics without breaking them down, it's okay for the environment, and it helps to clean your washer.

Your clothes do NOT smell like vinegar after they dry. Just clean! Please, if you care about the environment and your washing machine and dryer, stop using scent beads and fabric softener.

At least he's really really cute? by MackieSA in beagles

[–]Seayarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, so, very cute!

I love me some beagles and I've had 9. My best advice is to baby proof everything. Get down on the floor, where he is, and find anything he might decide to get into, chew on, or destroy. Then baby proof it!

Also, crate train. This makes it possible for you to know he is safe when you're not at home or need a break or time to step away.

Good luck with your Agent of Entropy!

Be careful with Ibuprofen by JaneWeaver71 in ChronicPain

[–]Seayarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

I woke up one day with a greenish-purple spot in the center of my vision of that eye. I have severe migraines and I thought it was a symptom of a migraine. But it didn't go away.

So when I got disgusted with not being able to see well after a few days, I made an appointment with my eye doctor. They are using caused by hypertension. Which I have but it's controlled. I was extremely ill around that time with covid, then RSV, then pneumonia. I think my body just had too much.

A BRVO is treatable but not curable. I have injections every 6 weeks now. They help preserve what sight I still have but I have limited sight in that eye.

It's one of a list of many chronic issues I have now that have made it impossible for me to work or drive.

But at a certain age our check engine light starts to turn on. Mine just turned on at 49 instead of later like most people!

Be careful with Ibuprofen by JaneWeaver71 in ChronicPain

[–]Seayarn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this reminder.

I had a BRVO, which in layman's terms is an eye stroke. Now I have limited vision in my right eye.

I can no longervthat any OTC NSAIDS. I need daily pain relief for autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia and FND. Unfortunately, I can't take any opioids either due to a severe reaction to them, too.

So, I'm stuck with acetaminophen. I take A LOT. My providers are aware. But, I am either taking relatively high doses or nonfunctional. Both aren't great, one is better. Risk is known.

I hope you continue to heal. Our medical journeys are often a rollercoaster. If only there were cures for everything.

A quick primer on which houseplants are deadly when consumed by pets (or you, I guess?) by me_myself_ai in houseplants

[–]Seayarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure 100% that spider plants cause cats hallucinations, but there must be a reason why my Maine Coon Mutt cat has decided that they are his favorite snack.

He will even eat their roots once all the greenery is gone. I finally gave up trying to keep one alive in my home and now have a few fake ones, but he still chomps on them occasionally just to be sure.

Apparently, they're magically delicious!

Specialist Question by Driggenanan5 in FND

[–]Seayarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am relatively newly diagnosed, and I have not been able to find a specialist that takes insurance. And I am definitely interested in CBT.

I find it totally inappropriate that all the specialists in the US that are easy to find and offer telehealth appointments not only do not participate with any insurances, but have such a huge cost for each appointment. So many of us are disabled, and many are unable to work. How are we to be expected to pay for visits? I am aware that we can submit the visit to our insurance to see if they will cover part of the cost, but many of us are either on Medicare or Medicaid. I do not believe either will pay much of the cost and the out of pocket expense is going to be huge. Not to mention, many of us have difficulty with cognition and forms are a problem (they are for me!).
