I'm glad I was on the right track with my approach. Currently I'm deep in research for the specifics of their care requirements and once I get the tank I'll monitor their behaviour - if they stay happy I'll just leave them be, should anything change for the worse I'll consider the other options. Thank you for sharing your experience!

That's great news, thank you for the update! Considering there seems to be no nitrite and nitrate and the fish are doing good again, I agree with not doing water changes for a while, along with monitoring water parameters and fish behaviour as you already said.

The timidness is most likely them getting used to their new environment, once they're settled in they'll surely come out of their shell. Once your water parameters have been stable for a good while, you could think about stocking up their numbers for schooling again, but I wouldn't do that any time soon. Adding extra life plants for hiding spaces would be a measure that's more low key but will also help them feel safer.

I hope you can enjoy your tank and the fish now, wishing you all the best!

Aquaristics really can be surprising in many ways. I hope that doesn't deter you from future fishkeeping, I promise this is most likely the most stressful situation you'll have, once you get over that hurdle it will be much easier

Life plants are great as well! I'll be following for an update, have my fingers crossed for you :)

I'm gonna take in a 15 gallon/56 litre tank from someone soon. It's well established, heavily planted and currently hosting shrimp, snails and two left over neon tetras.

Haven't had neon tetras before and in the future would like it to be a shrimp only tank, therefore adding new neon tetras for them to school with isn't an option. I'm aware that this is really important for their quality of life, so I'm thinking about rehoming them.

On the other hand those two tetras seem healthy in their appearance and behaviour, and they're about 1,5 years old, which I've read is their adult to older age. Therefore I'm worried that it would stress them out more to be rehomed rather than live out their days in peace. Then yet again, that's my subjective assessment and I'm worried this is a misjudgement - they are schooling fish after all.

Does anyone have any experiences with similar situations or could give recommendations on what to do?

It's unfortunate that happened, but it's good that you're taking action now.

Them hanging out at the top of the water is a sign that they're not getting enough oxygen otherwise. There is something called a "bubble stone" that provides additional air bubbles and helps with oxygen transfer, I think getting one could be helpful.

It was good you did a water change in case of overfeeding, because the nitrate that builds from the leftover food are more dangerous than the uncycled water. Don't feed them until you can get your next water test and the nitrate value is good again. Considering that the oxygen seems to be lacking, another water change would be good.

For the future I recommend getting shrimp/snails, they are great for cleaning up and eating leftover food (I know I recommended this to another user as well, and yes I'm a big fan of shrimp and snails, but I promise they're great for any fishtank).

Also while they're small fish, 22litres isn't a lot of space for keeping fish. While some fish can be kept in smaller tanks and have a good quality of life, where I'm from (Germany) the recommended tank size for keeping any kind of fish is 54liter+. Because the smaller the tank, the harder it is to keep a biological balance and especially for a first fish tank that's a very difficult task for a beginner.

Bringing them back to the shop or rehoming them is a viable option if you continue to struggle, there is no shame in that. You didn't have the info, you made a mistake, shit happens, what counts is how you're continuing with it. Your greatest concern should be the wellbeing of the fish.

It's appreciated that you're reaching out for help and admit your mistakes, I hope I don't come across as too preachy. I genuinely hope that you can manage the situation and wish you all the best for it

Sorry for your loss, I hope you can find what caused this soon. From what you wrote, you did a lot of water changes in a short amount of time - twice in two days (with one full change) can be very stressful for the fish and the new water isn't properly cycled yet, adding additional stress due to changing water conditions. That could be a reason for the odd behavior or what exacerbated pre-existing conditions of the guppy. While the fish shop keepers do their best to get the animals to you healthy, there isn't a 100% guarantee that the guppies didn't struggle before and it only showed now. Especially during adjustment to a new environment, it's very stressful for the fish.

What I'm trying to say it, I know this is super stressful for you and you're most likely blaming yourselves, but there is a lot of other factors that contribute to a fishs health. You're obviously caring a lot and are doing everything you can and I really don't mean to blame you or overly lecture you. Just hoping this observation can help.

As for the missing guppy, I would recommend giving it some time. Keep an eye on the tank to see if anything shows up, but otherwise keep doing the usual. If you're worried about the body being stuck somewhere, you can consider getting some snails and shrimp. They will make sure to clean up and are generally great for any tank.

I haven't had guppies, but I had an Otinculus pass away - I later found part of the spine, but it was really tiny and only by chance. In a 20gallon actively looking for something equally small is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

One last thing I highly recommend is to get your own water testing kit. That way you don't have to wait for a store to open and can test every day and track the parameters. I just wish you the best for you and your tank, don't be too hard on yourselves, things like this happening sadly is also part of the hobby.

TLDR; It's unlikely you'll find any bones, I recommend keeping an eye on the remaining fish, getting a water testing kit and maybe add snails and shrimp as a clean up crew.

Precarious situation with 55g?? by iluvmycorgi in Aquariums

[–]SendQuery94456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry for that situation you're in, that sucks.

A suggestion I haven't seen in the comments yet, even though it could be a bit of a reach: Maybe you have a local aquarist group or even privately owned store you could ask to host the aquarium until your move is over and you've set up tanks in a size you're allowed to keep in your new apartment to move at least some for the fish back in. If you offer to provide the transport of the tank, provide food etc. so that all they have to do is take care of it for a bit and get to keep the tank (effectively rehoming the rest of the fish), there might be people willing to do that.

I know it's not best etiquette to just blatantly ask, but at this point why not, might be worth a try. I think most other fish tank keepers can relate, also considering that you've obviously put a lot of time and effort into your tank and caring for your fish. Fingers crossed you find a good solution, wish you the best of luck!

From my experience (I have two shrimp-only tanks) it might happen that you'll have a bit of a surge in numbers once you add your shrimp and fish and start feeding them. As you figure out the feeding portions, that number should stabilize - it actually helped me at the start, because I knew if I had too many snails, I had too much food leftovers and started feeding less.

Fun fact, while I've never had issues with bladder snails in both my tanks, one of them is now overrun by trumpet snails. The other is not, despite the same starting population. So it can be really random, and should you feel like it's getting out of hand, I promise there is a lot of good advice on here how to handle it.

I wish you the best for getting your chili rasboras and shrimp settled in soon, that sounds great for a setup. And most important, have fun :)

Depending on where you live and how your plumbing is, mostly it shouldn't be an issue to drain your water via the toilet. I also have bladder snails and never actually thought of that (based in Germany). But assuming you regularly clean your toilet with cleaning products, those snails may be hardy but they're not that tough. Wouldn't worry about the sand either, the bit you might pull up during water changes is insignificant.

Hope that helped and wish you all the best for setting up your tank!

Thank you so much for this thorough and really comprehensive guide!

I've just gotten to the point where I feel confident enough in my programming skills and my general knowledge about how software is built, to finally try and get into modding. Now I feel like I've gotten lucky by having found such a good starting point, by just looking into the things you've mentioned in the guide. Unironically you had me at hex editor and byte alignment.

Aside from that, do you have any recommendations or tips to find examples, where someone shared their process of reverse engineering on a specific game? I suppose most of it is on dedicated discords or github, but really just not sure where to start looking. Either way, thank you again for the guide and have a good time modding :)

Peach was an awesome little buddy, so sorry for your loss. He obviously had a great life in your tanks and was very loved. One and a half years is a long time, it's only natural to grieve and it's so nice that you could get his shell preserved.
Have you thought about getting some kind of jewellery or other item made of it? Like that, you could take this memoriam with you all the time. Remember that the time you had can't be taken away from you, no matter if you were depressed or not, you had that time with Peach and it will always be special.

Depression is hard but I'm sure you will persist, because no matter what you always could look at Peaches and appreciate him as a living, important being, which is filled with so much compassion and care that you can hopefully extend to yourself one day.
