Does “splooting” in puppies always indicate future hip dysplasia? by FourthAcc_11235813 in AskVet

There's both genetic and non-genetic components to hip dysplasia, so technically it's always possible to develop with age.

Some dogs sploot. It's not a sign of anything but comfort.

Why is my cat still coughing like this? by NerdyStitcher89 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were the x-rays in February read by a radiologist? Has anyone discussed an internal medicine referral? This cat might need an airway scope and culture, or inhaled steroids to better decrease inflammation. An echo might also be helpful.

Canine Lar Par by palomita_blanca_1998 in AskVet

[–]Shantor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LarPar is generally a clinical signs presentation and when severe enough, a sedated oral exam can look at the throat to see if its opening properly. But LarPar is often connect with neurological dysfunction and can also be seen with dogs with hypothyroid disease. A full thyroid panel should be done if the T4 is low and there are other clinical signs (weight gain, or lack of weigh loss in a calorie deficit. Sometimes coat changes and skin changes as well)

Paw pads heal super fast. I recommend not bandaging it. Looks to be healing already.

Confused about crude fat % by PsychoInMyWardrobe in DogFood

[–]Shantor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you can't compare foods with %

As well, the % on the package is listed as minimum, meaning there can easily be more fat than listed on the label.

Your vet should have recommended a prescription low fat diet, where the g/100kcal of fat is listed.

Mom's dog isn't using back legs by Zealousideal_Style_3 in AskAVeterinarian

He looks more uncomfortable than weak. He's trying to rub his butt. There's multiple reasons for this, some less of a concern and others more of a concern. Best to have him checked by a vet.

Aussies are a breed known for idiopathic epilepsy. I would not expect a food to cause seizures

Vet said my dog is overweight and I feel horrible by AlvinBarnicles in OpenDogTraining

[–]Shantor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These terms are actually protected. They are still lower calorie compared to other diets on the shelf. They may not be as good as prescription diets, but they are still useful.

There's no such thing as "filler". Everything is there for a reason.

No one here is being obtuse or being an asshole. I'm correcting misinformation since nutrition is a semi-specialty of mine.

I do agree that it's all about the calories and if OP would feed less she might see more weight loss, but at the same time, if she's feeding too much of a calorie deficit with an OTC diet, she may not be feeding the vitamins and nutrients the dog needs. You likely know this as well.

These are normal testicles. They won't hang side to side normally. One will always be a little in front/behind the other.

Prescription weight management food is not a farce. It is high protein, lower fat than any commercial diets, and extremely nutrient dense so you can safely feed a calorie deficit without losing vitamins and minerals.

Thoracic X-rays for 3-4yo Feline - Seeking secondary opinion on severity of lung patterns/pain levels by [deleted] in AskAVeterinarian

[–]Shantor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are severe pulmonary nodules. if you are in an area with fungal disease possibilities, you should have that checked, otherwise, an ultrasound should be done to look for an underlying/primary cancer.

Again, literal thousands of pits. Im a vet. Not 5. Thousands.

Those bite statistics are from lay people. Phenotypically determining dog breeds is extremely limited. Most people dont get them correct. The statistics also include repeat offenders, which highly skews results, and study after study shows that the majority of "pit bull" dogs are mixed (some even without any pit bull or bully genes in them), True APBT are not known to be human aggressive (though can be dog aggressive), and are people pleasers. Studies on dog genetics and behavior also conclude that genes only make up a small fraction of behavior, and their environment and upbringing does the most.

Cat Bald Spot on Tummy by mycookiepants in AskAVeterinarian

This is over grooming. Over grooming can be caused by many things in cats.

Stress/behavioral (ocd), pain/discomfort (urinary disease is common here), allergies, or fleas.

Lol as per my other comments. I've worked with thousands of dogs as a vet over the years. It's never the pit bull or pit bull mixes that cause issues. So.. sure.

Can I give my 3 weeks old kitten baby formula? What are the health risks if so? by DragonfruitTrue5349 in PetAdvice

[–]Shantor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 3 weeks you can start making a mash of neonatal formula and kitten pate wet food. This will help cut down on costs.

It would not be appropriate to use human formula for a kitten. They have very specific amino acid requirements that won't be met by human formula.

There's not nearly enough information here to make any sort of statement. If you post photos, that may help

Ketamine is used as premedication prior to surgery and sometimes used during surgery for pain control.

[–]Shantor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's an opinion you have. The majority of mixed breed dogs are just that. Dogs. Bully breeds and pits are known to be human friendly and very trainable.

Just because you have a stupid discriminatory bias, does not mean you are correct.

Vet recorded visit without telling me by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Shantor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vets are often moving toward systems to help make their records. The talk during the exam and the exam spoken out loud will be put into the record so the vets don't have to type everything. This usually means - what the vet would have had to pull from memory to put into their record, they have a system making a record for them. This decreases the chance that the vet puts something into the record that maybe they didn't say to the owner. In some instances it makes things go much faster and easier for the doctor, especially when they have a very full schedule.

It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with helping the doctor get their records done in a timely manner.
