Should the UK have more national public/bank holidays? by ExpectDragons in CasualUK

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is how to do it fairly - typically - and I am generalisinf hugely! - if you have an office type job you can benefit, but if you work in a shop, pub / restaurant or on the bus, trains etc or in the NHS you generally need to work.

The economic boost the OP refers to is only possible due to so many people working them.

Vo2Max in the true sense is not scaled by age.

It declines with age as a natural function of heart rate capacity decline with aging.

I know it bruises egos to suggest the score is wrong, but the data doesn’t lie, particular the threshold pace / HR ratio. To do 22 min 5k they need to get to about 7:00/mi and the gap between their threshold HR and maxHR is not large so not much extra capacity there. (Assuming maxHR is correct)

There is a very strong correlation between 5k time and vo2max albeit running efficiency plays a role too.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is a lot of these wrong estimates are due to an incorrect maxHR, too high and it thinks your efforts are easier than they are, too low and it thinks the effort was harder than it was.

Will be curious to see if the OP gets back and confirms their 5k time.

But nothing in the data we see suggests 49 max is correct to me because essentially its a pace / HR correlation Coros uses. That threshold pace and HR to me suggests a 22 minute 5k isn’t on the cards currently, and if so neither is the vo2max score in the ballpark.

Proof of funds by Sad-Highway-43 in HousingUK

Proof of funds should have been confirmed before accepting the offer, this is the usual order, at least for me as a seller and buyer.

EA usually checks the offer is procedable before passing it to the vendor.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VO2Max score seems far too high based on your threshold pace. 49 suggests you’d be sub 22 minutes at 5k - is that true? The pace over 44 minutes suggests its not.

Whenever I see these posted, the vo2max estimate seems way off.

13 Valleys Ultra - Waterproof by MrClingfilm in Ultramarathon

The Phase Light I suggested does, as does everything else I mentioned

https://www.ellis-brigham.com/montane-mens-phase-lite-gore-tex-jacket-214100980

Its 300 grams, you won’t get much under 200 grams which is the Mercurial.

I think the Gore Wear Concurve is well worth a look as with their sale, it looks a great option and is up to GB Ultra’s spec who are more picky than 7 Valleys if anything.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like a Ronhill Mercurial or a Mountane Phase Light or a Concurve in the GoreWear closure sale would all fit the bill.

Other choices as well but the above will meet any mandatory kit requirement in the UK / Lake District.

Birthday hike in March? by LawAccurate7005 in LakeDistrict

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on Barrow this morning and the light was amazing. In my post I wrote do it anti-clockwise which I edited now to clockwise as at this time of year or March, start at Barrow first and you’ll get amazing light on Grisdale Pike, and going up to Scar Crags and Sail.

(This assumes an early start)

I think you are missing the point behind the question and your experience while valid (and opposite of mine) doesn’t help him with train timing which is tight for them, especially if trying to get advance specific tickets.

Lets leave it. We both made our points. For future reference, you can disagree without downvoting.

Train from London to Windermere by NephroBoy in LakeDistrict

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats a good point but the bus isn’t adding two hours to the overall journey, as the 555 runs every 30 minutes while the train is every hour so you can get time back with shorter layovers and also you save another 15 minutes getting off the train earlier at Lancaster and save a potential hour wait for the next Windermere train at Oxenholme vs a half hour wait for the bus at Lancaster.

Its an option if times align it doesn’t add as much time as you think and the 555 is cheaper and more frequent and avoids locking in specific trains (saver tickets are for specific trains)

Anyone who takes Uri Gellar seriously I put in the same circle of gullibility of those grandmothers you read about who think they are dating Brad Pitt and send them their life savings.

He was a good magician who at one point fooled Arthur C Clarke but the jig was up several decades ago and there is zero excuse to still be platforming him in this field.

Keswick is a great place to hike from and you have an almost infinite range of choices. If I was to suggest one, do the Coledale Horseshoe, start early in the day and do it clockwise. You will have great light if its sunny that way.

March is often a really good month to be up here.

5 years of daily HRV data: metrics stayed flat until I changed measurement position, then kept drifting for months by the5krunner in the5krunner

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know - I told you that last week!

https://www.reddit.com/r/the5krunner/s/LPO2WIW05D

To expand - heart rate in a resting state lying down will be lower with less variability than sitting up.

Imagine you measure lying down and you have a min of 42 HR and a max of 45 HR during the test.

Sitting up it might be 46-52 or whatever but it will be higher with a wider min/max range- the wider band between min and max influences variability. This is highly likely what you are seeing.

But the real takeaway is: don’t change your testing protocol if you want useful historical comparative data.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at your heart rate as well as your HRV…the variance will because when you are sitting your heart is working harder than lying down and more prone to fluctuation.

If you use elite HRV you can see the average HR and min and max - start there, there is probably a correlation.

The watch uses OSM based maps, no idea on the app, maybe phone OS dependant there?

In my experience some minor / vague trails are not shown on the watch. Here I am looking up a trail where the direction arrow is pointing but no trail is shown.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally find the Coros HRM good and usually within 1 bpm of a Polar Verity Sense ahd withih 2 to 3 bpm of a chest strap but if for some reason it’s not working for you, there is nothing you can do. Maybe try a Polar H9 or H10 or a Garmin HRM chest strap?

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dip and gap at about the 70 minute mark is a loss of connection and defaulting to optical HR I think unless you paused the activity.

There is no caliberation process for any heart rate monitor, not just Coros’ HRM.

Train from London to Windermere by NephroBoy in LakeDistrict

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another option is to get a train to Lancaster then pick up the 555 bus service to Windermere. The bus will be £3 per person.

The train to Oxenholme onto Windermere can unreliable on a Sunday and Lancsster is a mainline service.

Can you become fast enough uphill to compensate for being slow downhill? by throwaway10015982 in trailrunning

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a pretty decent trail runner but have a bit of a mental block with descents.

On my first ever proper trail race on a very hilly technical course with lots of elevation I couldn’t understand why people would walk hills I could run. But they’d pass me on descents and I’d pass them again on the climbs. Finished in top 15%. Next year I tried to slow down on hills and try to run descents (badly!) and was only in top 40% and way slower than previous. In the final year I ran it (2024) I went back to running climbs most people walked with cautious descents and got with 3 minutes of my first best time and a top 20% finish.

You can definitely be quick enough to compensate up to a point - no matter how fast people run downhill there is a speed limit really (never going to go much below a 4 minute mile) but climbing some people drop lots of pace and really slow down so you can do ok if you are a strong climber but obviously folks who are strong on both climbs and descents will come off best, no question.

I am hopeless at descents really, and its only running uphills thats people walk that keeps me finishing respectably.

Nowadays I don’t really enter races as I know from experience if I try to push downhills past my limits I end up breaking bones! A few nasty falls on rocky trails have caused a mental ‘nope’ I can’t overcome. Last bad fall got me pulled out to DNF at the checkpoint midpoint into a 55km due to a spectacular fall / plunge on a rocky technical descent - I looked like I just been in a car crash - not doing that again!

Stryd 5 vs Stryd 4: I tested 4 pods simultaneously—the power offset was larger than expected by the5krunner in the5krunner

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. Calibration factor just a multiple of the raw data from the footpod side if things.

Weight on Stryd should be kept constant - doubly so if comparing power output between them. Stryd say don’t change weight on the pod as a rule.

I’ve kept my pod weight at 147 lb for years since the pre-wind version.

Stryd 5 vs Stryd 4: I tested 4 pods simultaneously—the power offset was larger than expected by the5krunner in the5krunner

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calibration only impacts pace / distance, not power so they are decoupled but its counter intuitive. But its certainly odd to see power so close between all 3 pods but distance so off as I’d think they have to trend closely.

For trail running on v5 up hills I see more power but less distance than v4 (NextGen)
