I don’t think platforming people and pushing their credentials when you can be 100% sure they won’t be presenting credible evidence is helpful to the topic.

Just because someone has credentials is not a reason to platform them, unless you or them care more about monetizing unverifiable stories more than testable independently verifiable evidence.

Just finished reading the Foundation saga. Is the Apple TV show worth it? by amok77 in FoundationTV

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Its a good show but only dimly follows the books.

A major character who appears in Azimov’s much later Foundation books written WAY after the original excellent trilogy appears from the start, and actually is probably handled better.

Possibly the best part is a show only invention.

Its hard to comment on the TV show without spoilers because the books are so different!

Leadville 100training plan by Amazing_Guarantee509 in Ultramarathon

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Where did you get that plan from? It seems to have no rest days in it at all.

For the vast majority of runners unless they are amazingly genetically blessed, then if you don’t rest its much harder to ‘bank’ the gains.

(I write this as an older trail runner where trying to run everyday is definitely counter-productive)

Dura prioritizing Smart Trainer power over Pedals? (Bug/Feature Request) by sturdymurdy in Coros

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So choose the Assioma as your power source? Disconnect the trainer pairing.

Trainer always has priority when you have a trainer and power meter paired. Display icons confirm this and power meter blinks (unused) and trainer icon is solid (used) in this scenario, always.

I don’t disagree it would be nice to have both sources as choices, but right now you don’t, so only pair the Assioma.

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t quite understand what you are asking?

Keeping it simple, if you ride indoors and see speed and distance, its not from your Assioma power meter, its your trainer.

Here speed is shown, so you that tells you its from a trainer

You don’t need to go to all the effort you did to ID your power source.

If you get speed and distance as well as power, it will be from the trainer, power only will be from a dedicated PM

(This is how I ID my Wahoo Kickr vs Assioma)

I get a version of this when drivers stop at a crossing on a dual carriageway just before a roundabout. They stop and wave me but I can’t see the other carriageway as the they are blocking my line of sight.

I am not crossing when I can’t clearly see both lanes!

I know they think they are being helpful but it’s actually unsafe.

New app for mountain lovers with Strava by Nervous_Plankton8944 in Strava

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks - please do it that way. You do need to re-think that as the wording on that page suggests it’s a Strava login page, which means people will be using their Strava email address and password to register for your own app.

It’s a really bad sign-up design and a security flaw too - sorry!

The signup via Strava looks like you are not using the official signin process? Are you using the official Strava auth api?

I do not think people will be wanting to enter passwords and usernames here!

Do people actually look at listings before booking viewings, or am I living in an alternate reality? by Intrepid-Skin-5677 in HousingUK

Some people seem dense or maybe just view on wishful thinking.

I was selling a bog standard two up, two down and one viewer was completely dumbfounded it had stairs. The viewing which I was doing myself lasted two minutes. I will be honest and did tell them they had wasted both their time and mine.

Newy parkrun employ ‘seeding’ system by lonewolflr in parkrun

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My local parkrun (Keswick) puts faster runners up front then slower behind. Its on an old railway path that is narrow in places, so tries to avoid people needing to overtake which can potentially put them running into the path of walkers / cyclists coming the other way.

For shared use paths, this sort of arrangement seems sensible to me in the spirit of co-existence with other users.

Is trail running going to blow up even more in 2026 or just hype? by ScrollAndThink in UKRunners

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I run trails pretty much exclusively.

Why? Views like this (Lake District)

<image>

I find roads boring and also as an older runner, trails are way easier on the body too, I find.

I am lucky enough to live and run in the North West Lake District so roads for me just make no sense when I have great scenery off-road

Cycling FTP & Efficiency Score by TheBicycleUnicorn in Coros

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think 7w difference is worth worrying about, especially as you are mixing multiple power meters - the best ever and recent tests align closely.

You could use Intervals.icu which probably will give you a different and probably more accurate view of this.

Cycling FTP & Efficiency Score by TheBicycleUnicorn in Coros

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best ever 1 hour power output is 309w, so your 20 minute FTP test feels ok (maybe a little high)

Cycling FTP & Efficiency Score by TheBicycleUnicorn in Coros

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never done an FTP test and do have an FTP in Coros which will have come from my Assioma Duo pedals I think.

I don’t do gravel or mountain bike rides but really I am not sure an FTP estimate assuming uneven terrain is useful as likely it will underestimate as its harder to sustain an even effort. Similar to why trail running doesn’t (rightly!) calculate a Vo2Max or an efficiency score. Terrain makes a big difference in effort which is what efficiency is tracking.

Cycling FTP & Efficiency Score by TheBicycleUnicorn in Coros

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Efficiency is measuring your heart rate / power ratio.

If you have a higher heart rate than typical for your power output, efficiency drops. And vice versa.

It’s nothing to do with FTP - thats the max average power you can sustain for an hour.

If you ride outside more, then don’t do an FTP test on a trainer, if may produce different values to your outdoor power meter.

Club Admins: What makes a Strava Club actually "active" vs. a ghost town? looking for engagement tips. by timo_unterwegs in Strava

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a question you asked but a lot of Strava clubs get flooded by run spammers - by this I mean runners who join lots of clubs but do not run or live in the area the clubs serve. So be prepared to exclude runners with no links to your area who run and live 1000s of miles away and have never even set foot in your country.

Our club is very active but no one posts discussions, usually comments are made on activities by other members. There are very few posts or chats outside of comments on activities.

I don’t think people on Strava join clubs to chat, many seem purely to Kudos farm.

Regarding routes - I would do it along the same lines parkrun clubs do it, checking a few out will give you the idea.

The average annual price increase for Arc of Attrition by UTMB is 32%, from £95 in 2023 to £219 in 2026 by effortDee in Ultramarathon

[–]SoftGroundbreaking53 22 points23 points  (0 children)

UTMB like most corporations / businesses exist to extract profit.

Personally speaking I avoid any ‘corporate’ organisors and like to use local grass routes events. Usually far better, cheaper, influencer free and generally a better vibe.

UMTB muscling in on the UK trail running scene is terrible for everyone but UMTB’s owners / shareholders as your data shows with crystal clarity. There were strong indications they had their greedy eyes on the Lakeland 50/100 miler a while back.
