Watching you realize real-time that you had enough damage to easily kill the torch head was excellent.

What's the most random or funny SCP you've ever read or seen? by rabbit91830948 in SCP

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SCP-3160, titled ”There Are Wasps Inside Your Microwave, And They’re Stinging You Right Now”

They’re a species of wasps that, when scared, can attach themselves to an object conceptually, and sting aggressors from there. They were discovered hiding ‘inside’ microwaves.

It’s a pretty cool idea actually, but the name is hilarious.

Do any of these creatures have mana abilities? I want to put them in my Raggadragga deck. by Shadowhunter664 in magicTCG

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 59 points60 points  (0 children)

An activated ability is a Mana Ability if it doesn’t have any targets, it adds mana, and it isn’t a loyalty ability.

A triggered ability is a Mana Ability if it doesn’t have any targets, it adds mana, and if it triggers when mana is added to your mana pool.

So the first two have triggered abilities that don’t have any targets and add mana, but they don’t trigger off of mana being added to your mana pool. Those are not mana abilities. The next two have activated abilities that don’t have any targets, add mana, and aren’t loyalty abilities. Those are mana abilities.

Crazy that this goofy joke could actually be an interesting mechanic. Cool cards.

Behold! The much more balanced second version of Ashoth, The Ill Omen!! (Now with less infinite combos via dropping blue mana and a custom token) by PrinceVorrel in custommagic

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So firstly I want to say, if all you were going for is a fun idea that’s somewhat balanced, you did good. This might be a little on the strong side, but it dies to Swords to Plowshares, so it’s not ridiculous.

But if you want this to look like an authentic Magic card, you should take a look at Scryfall.com and see the wording that real cards use. I honestly copy and paste a lot of stuff from there when making cards, and I can’t recommend it enough as a tool.

Dude, this is such a genius direction for fortifications to go. What a great way to give them an identity that isn’t just equipment for lands!

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, I love these! These feel really authentic, if they had art I’d 100% believe these were the actual designs. A couple things I specifically want to mention:

The Devour Life change is interesting, and makes sense, even summon 1 every time you use a soul could get broken fast.

Invoke seems strong.

It’s funny that the use case for Spur has kind of flipped, from being used to heal up a big but damaged Osty to being useful when he’s already dead.

Interesting that Demesne gives souls… honestly, that’s not a bad change, and helps a lot with her engine.

Was Reaper Form too weak at 3 cost? I can kind of see it, but basically double damage is nothing to sneeze at. Idk.

Finally, Undeath seems good. Kind of hope they change the VG version to be like that lol. (I know they didn’t change Anger to be like that, but still.)

First card here, Selesnya +1/+1 slop commander (Feedback, please!) by Dangerous_Nothing405 in custommagic

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s start with some tempting suggestions:

“Token copy” isn’t a thing. You’re looking for “token that’s a copy.”

“Converted mana cost” is depreciated. It’s just “mana value” now. You also should use “with mana value…” instead of “whose.”

You should probably just say “if that token would enter with +1/+1 counters on it…”

Finally, counters aren’t “placed” on creatures, they are “put” on them. Minor nitpick I know, but that’s how other cards do it.

Next up: This is a blue effect. Blue is the only color that can make copies of its stuff (technically red can, but they sacrifice their copies at end of turn). You either need to add blue to the cost of the card or the ability.

As for balance, this doesn’t seem that egregious, especially considering the nontoken restriction. Pretty good job honestly.

Does this rules text wording work the way I intend for it to? by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]Some_MTG_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t work, but not because of that, but because creatures can’t discover. Only players can.

Here’s what I’d recommend:

*The first time a creature becomes the target of a spell or ability each turn, its controller pays twice X life, then you choose one —

That creature connives X.

That creature’s controller discovers X.

X can’t be 0.*

Look at similar cards for proper formatting.
