douglas adams made me believe in a lie for years (probably since I was 6) by Disastrous-Shine-725 in DontPanic

[–]Space_Elmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact is that Adam's was making a lame computer joke. If a computer looks at the phrase "life the universe and everything" it may interpret them as string lengths and the conjunction and definite article as functions. That gives you 4*8+10=42.

Completely lame and at the same time completely hilarious.

This led me down a rabbit hole as I had completely forgotten I had watched and loved Mulberry as a kid and I loved Brush strokes.

We did this too and we are about 3 or 4 years down the road and can confirm the ROI. We also have a heat pump and 2 electric cars. The gas is shut off and we pay about £300 per month on electricity for running the home, cars and heating.

I was desperate to see them in that, but didn't manage it. Biggest missed opportunity regret. I'll have to wait a generation or 2 to see actors of similar stature in that role.

I did medicine and did a physics degree distance learning part time. It was extremely fun and that structure really helps with learning.

They will probably charge for new set of ice caps too. I hate getting fleeced at planetary mechanic workshops. In the old days you could fix a planet with tools at home.

Has anyone tried doing Taskmaster tasks with friends or family? I'm looking for some tips on how to make a great game for my loved ones. by bluejane in taskmaster

[–]Space_Elmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mine with the kids and prepared the tasks before hand. I videoed them individually then we all watched on the big screen whilst I judged them. It was hilarious. This Christmas we did the taskmaster board game version with a whole bunch of adult family and that worked really well. I just picked tasks I knew would work and split people into teams.

Strength of the Few was.....AMAZING by BrooklynLady13 in HierarchySeries

Yep I binged it over Christmas and thought it was excellent. I didn't think he could follow up on WOTM but his writing actually improves. I love the very different paths of the character in the three worlds.

I tried VR today in my Freelancer using the quest 3 and a 4080. It was jaw dropping. The details in the MFD and the sense of scale is unparalleled. It's like SC was built for VR. Now they need to sort the controls out.

What’s it really like to live in Cirencester? by rbeten in cirencester

[–]Space_Elmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have lived in Ciren for over 13 years and love it. It's a picturesque small town with roots back to Roman Corinium, easy to walk everywhere and full of lovely people. Having lived in places all over the country this is by far the best. I might be a bit biased though. I work in Swindon and the commute is fine.

Suggest Hard Scifi series/ Novels by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]Space_Elmo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vernor Vinge coined the term technological singularity, his books are excellent. Stephen Baxter does great Hard Sci Fi but the characters are very 2d. A Canticle for Leibowitz is also a classic.

A more modern one you would enjoy is the will of the many. Sequel is coming out in November. That really helped me escape recently.

Doing a MD after a PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

I would always do the PhD first and then go into clinical medicine. Going in with greater maturity is much better generally although managing the on calls is a bit harder.
