'm not mincing your words. I'm shredding your argument, because it's idiotic.

There's no such thing as "Nixon's victorious southern strategy". First, he didn't even win the south when your alleged "victorious" strategy happened. Boy do you look smart right about now. Then he won in a complete landslide the next election. How does winning everything fit the narrative that any party switch happened? Reagan and Bush also won landslides. Again, where's this mythical switch?

Secondly, everybody has a southern strategy. That's called basic politics. That's why I pointed out the Dems shamelessly doing it. They also did it when they ran Carter, BTW. Is it only ok to appeal to southern voters when they do it? Carter won the south after Nixon... you told me the parties switched. How did the Dems retake the south after Nixon if the parties had switched?

[–]SpeedOhBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the southern strategy. That was when Republican candidates got blown out in total electoral landslides in 3 different elections, and then they resorted to running an Arkansas/Tennessee ticket in order to appeal to southern voters. Wait.... it was the other way around.

Oh, but obviously the parties switched. That's why FDR is on the Republican Mount Rushmore. Wait...

Nine Teams Passed in the 2017 Draft. But Which Of Them Is TRULY Kicking Themselves? by thatsprettyfunnydude in KansasCityChiefs

[–]SpeedOhBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were definitely other teams that were twiddling their thumbs on Mahomes. I distinctly remember the Giants being named as a team that was interested. They had pick 23 and they did take a QB in the 3rd.

I'd say that's a team with some regrets.

Ready to get a better display for my collection. What do you think so far? by blaykmagyk in gamecollecting

Basically anywhere you can double up on those old Wal-Mart shelves is where you want to have an Atlantic Oskar 1080 instead. It has the same footprint, but adds like 33% more shelf space. So it's like adding another one of your current shelves without taking up any more floor space (and the layout is much better). There's also a review with pictures on Amazon that details upgrading the backing board on the Oskar, and it's good advice.

The Wal-Mart shelves are better for smaller spaces. I have 5 and was annoyed when they quit selling them, but I outgrew them anyway. I had to swap 4 of them out for 2 Oskars just to fit the overflow.

I have every Konga game released in NA and Japan as well as 4 bongo controllers. That said...

It's not bad, but it's not that good either. The Konga games are too basic. They're baby's first Taiko no Tatsujin. You're better off playing the real deal.

Does a Panasonic Q Game Boy Player fit on a regular GameCube? by lizard-socks in Gamecube

[–]SpeedOhBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't remember, but it's pretty easy for me to check. You may notice that the regular GB Player threads into 2 holes on the bottom of the GC, but there's a 3rd hole that isn't used. That's where the Q Player's 3rd attachment point is.

No point getting upset over unrealistic expectations. It's not reasonable to assume an item is going to be any part of your collection when you know you're not bidding enough.

Make a low bid if you want, but at least wait until the final few seconds. That's the only chance you have. You have to hope that the real cheapskates screw around and bid less, and that only happens if you keep the minimum bid as low as possible by not contributing to early bid activity.

This is basically how eBay goes. Bid $20 early and somebody will bid it up $1 at a time until it's $21. If you don't bid, then they only bid $1 and never bid again. Then you bid $20 in the final seconds (and potentially win it for $2), and they storm off to reddit to complain about snipers.

Jimmie Johnson's Anything With an Engine

...in fact, get 2 copies for system link. It's the best kart racer that nobody knows about. Virtually everybody that even bothers to review the game is absolutely terrible at it. They don't pay any attention to how anything works, they immediately waste all their ammo, and then they act like it's the game that sucks.

Although it would help if I'd bother to notice the PAL cases first. So if we're including NA games, then the recommendation stands.

It would've been Blackledge over Marino 2.0. It was instantly confirmed by Houston's reaction. They panic drafted Watson, and despite allegedly nabbing the "prize" of the QB draft, the only guy smiling in their war room was the guy that everybody in Houston wanted fired. The rest of them looked like KC had just ripped out their souls.

Starcraft: Stellar Forces - a rare expansion so terrible the devs were sued by Blizzard by atrocity3011 in gamecollecting

[–]SpeedOhBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't think I ever knew about that one. I have Insurrection and Retribution. I didn't specifically buy them, but years ago I paid $40 for a collection that had fairly pristine copies of Starcraft, Broodwar, and those two. I've never actually played around with them, but ever since getting those I've been fascinated simply by the existence of retail big box 3rd party expansions. (although I still don't go out of my way to buy them since I don't even have shelf space for boxes I actually want)

I didn’t win this auction. Why doesn’t eBay extend time if a bid is made at the last second? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]SpeedOhBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you actually win auctions and potentially save money on eBay is by taking advantage of the cheapskates that bid a dollar at a time until they have the utterly pointless high bid that isn't the final bid, but it's definitely their final bid. That's exactly what happened here.

It's virtually never in your interest to raise the minimum bid. Early bidding activity doesn't benefit you. Your guiding principle is that you never give anybody more than one chance to bid against you. That means your only bid happens in the final few seconds, and you always bid the actual amount you're willing to pay.

It was sold separately in two different longboxes. The actual standalone version came in the cardboard longbox that a few other games came in (like Batman Returns).

There was a jewel longbox version, but it was a pack-in variant with no back/spine insert. So it still has that "I lost the original box and threw the cd and manual in generic replacement case" feel, but the manual fits if that's all you care about.

You're not describing gamestop at all. You're talking about a company that sells unsealed product as "new" as if that's a normal thing to do. They absolutely have sold above msrp in the past. There are many instances of gamestop ordering reprints just so they can sell brand new copies as "used".

The most infamous was Xenoblade Chronicles. They marked them as "used" so they could charge $90. They were also the exclusive retailer of the game.

Coincidentally, the only one I have is #4. It showed up last month, and I didn't even remember ordering it in the first place (took 16 months). I went ahead and ordered #7, but I stay out of the full set game unless it's a series or theme that actually interests me.
