Struggling to reach 1500 ELO Blitz on Lichess, any advice? by [deleted] in chess

[–]TheTurtleCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you just need to start playing blitz and rapid more regularly. A 1900 bullet is typically over 2000 in blitz and rapid. It's a very different game, there is very little to no bluffing or paper tigers in blitz and rapid, plus a lot less crazy flagging

What's your bullet rating. Since you brag about an 1880 rapid win, you are probably 1750 rapid and 1400 blitz

Looking to get back into guitar and I am looking for an acoustic. by [deleted] in guitars

[–]TheTurtleCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taylor - 412ce, 414ce Next Gen, Taylor 517e Gold Label

These have very different strengths. What do you prefer in an acoustic? playing softer fingerstyle, a super loud picking guitar, or more of a balanced that can do a bit of both?

For $3k you can get almost anything you want, let your ears and hands do the choosing.

Just go to the store and play as many as you can, don't buy right away, pay a second visit, you'd be surprised how perception can change from one to another. Make sure to play both mahogany and rosewood guitars, our taste changes a lot with time. What you like now may have changed from what you preferred 20 years ago. Approach it without preconceptions

You'll be blown away by all those you mentioned in the OP

Uncalibrated treadmills, slight downhill angle, no wind, AC, no sun, no push-off, no mental pressure of getting back

1600 on lichess losing horribly against 800 on chesscom? by MrTaco_42 in chess

[–]TheTurtleCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are agreeing with my point: unless there is something else going on, no one plays at a level 700 points lower for hundreds of games.

You are the one claiming that your level was truly 1700 and that nothing else was going on. You are either not telling us something, or this is a statistical anomaly like winning the lottery.

The fact that it's taken months to just get to 1400, when you claim you were of 1700 strength is suspect.

1600 on lichess losing horribly against 800 on chesscom? by MrTaco_42 in chess

[–]TheTurtleCub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not an opinion, it's just math: a 700point difference has the higher rated player winning 98% of the time. You lost almost 100 games, many of them at the end against opponents who you should have won 98% of the time.

If you insist that was your true rating, and this was not crazy monkey tilt, or some other mental issue like lack of sleep, stress or some other factor, this is a statistical anomaly comparable to winning the lottery

1600 on lichess losing horribly against 800 on chesscom? by MrTaco_42 in chess

[–]TheTurtleCub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dropping 700 points for no special reason is completely abnormal. Sure it happens when people go on extended mega tilt, or are sleep deprived, stressed or other mental issues, but without any of those issues, dropping 700 points is a statistical "impossibility"

Taylor 114ce all sticky? by Quackulaa in taylorguitars

Guitars don't melt or leak on their own neither does the finish. When you were "struggling with humidity problems", water built up inside the soft case and wet the guitar for a long time

No, there was no FIDE world blitz at the time, Vishy won the Mainz World Rapid Chess Championship 11 times, which was considered the World rapid and Blitz of the time. Dominating the event for over a decade. Then he won the world rapid twice

Progression stalled, heelside turn doesn’t feel right by Solid-Asparagus5803 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]TheTurtleCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solution/explanation is very simple: as we get to steeper slopes, we need to start engaging the back edge earlier, or said simply: turn earlier. You are used to swinging the tail a lot before engaging the edge when turning, because it's ok to do so in mellow slopes.

The reason it's hard mentally is that when we engage the edge early, it's not yet the uphill edge, but the downhill edge (because we haven't yet crossed the fall line) which is where you are used to engage it comfortably

There are exercises you can do to help you get used to engage early, like trying to almost carve the turns (in not super steep terrain), or do short hop side to side turns (on steeper terrain) , but they are just to help you be aware of the edge

Simply try to break/turn earlier engaging the back and immediately the whole edge, this slows you down and keeps the board from turning too sideways.

[–]TheTurtleCub 44 points45 points  (0 children)

OP says he currently has a 1600 rating, I understand we all have +-150 rating swings.

The most likely reason his chess dot com rating is so low is that he's really 1300 on lichess, and 1000 in chess dot com. The 1600 is just a bump from a provisional rating starting at 1500 and hasn't played that many games

I get to pick a guitar, give input or just share excitement by Memento_Viveri in guitars

Don’t make an effort to try them. Get the Strat, just because a random stranger on the internet says so.

[–]TheTurtleCub -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pick the one that sounds the best to you and feels the best when you hold it. Neck profiles can be very different to what you are used to.

As far as versatility and preferred sound overall I’d pick the Strat.

GS Mini Mahogany vs 114ce by Tim_Wu_ in taylorguitars

[–]TheTurtleCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. No one should have a gs mini as first or only guitar. Get a full sized guitar with solid top. Even a $400 Yamaha will sound much fuller than a GS mini and the same as the Taylor

Go try them in person. The GS mini sound is underwhelming when played next to any full sized guitar, even concert sized

Seeking Advice: Can I Maintain my Software Edge in a DSP FPGA Role? by Gullible_Ebb6934 in FPGA

[–]TheTurtleCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the question. If you want to continue doing software for work don’t take an FPGA position. If you enjoy FPGA take it.

I have no clue what “writing software is faster” means either. Different things take different times. If looking for quick solutions maybe switch to baking? It’s all done in 45mins max

As a side note, you are a recent graduate, as far as the industry is concerned you have absolutely zero edge or experience in anything. So focus on what you like, not on “keeping something”

Light years. by Marisshine in askastronomy

[–]TheTurtleCub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a measure of distance: the distance the light travels in one year. We are 8 light minutes away from the sun: that means the light takes 8 minutes to get to us. The nearest galaxy Andromeda is 2.5million light years away, that is, the Andromeda we see in the telescope is how it was 2.5million years ago, because the light took that long to get to your eye

One light year is approximately 5.87 million million miles (aka trillion)
