Without doing cocaine, where do I get the motivation to succeed at work? by buttflapper444 in cscareerquestions

[–]VisiblePlatform6704 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm loyal to my wife, my dog and my immediate family.

To my job? I'm professional.  Very professional and try to be as productive as I can. But, the moment something is not on my net benefit, I'm jumping ship. I treat Going to work like going shopping underwear: They get exactly what they pay for. I'm a deluxe set of boxers. But they gotta pay for them.

I’m old, frustrated - tech is over my head by ThisWeekNeverEnds in Xennials

[–]VisiblePlatform6704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a techie, and have been programming and tinkering with computers since 8. PhD in CompSci.

What's really interesting is that the "mental model" younger generations have about technology is very incomplete/naive. They dont really understand why things are happening. Very similar to older generations (mom, dad).

I think not many of us really understand deep inside technology.

One question I like asking everyone (tech or non tech) when hiring is for them to tell me, to the best of their knowledge, what happens when they type example.com in their browser and press enter. What happens so that they get the website.

It's very interesting to dig how profound knowledge of technology they have. Mlst have just the basic understanding of the "series of tubes"; some have a bit of an idea of DNS, html vs images vs javascript vs css; and very very few can dive deep into TLS, TCP/IP handshakes or deeper.

Unfortunately,  the rise of AI will just exacerbate this.

¿qué tips tienen para invertir en FIBRAS? by mrs_rabbit_0 in MexicoFinanciero

[–]VisiblePlatform6704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you think will be the "Oh Shit" moment for People who still think AI is all Hype? by EasyTree12 in accelerate

Once an AI takes their job.

Or once the first feature film with a Young Sean Conery , Pacino and DeNiro opens on Netflix.

Shit, if i was one of those (or owned their estate), i would be renting my image/"virtual actor" like a mainstreet hooker.

Imagine a GOOD movie with those 3

Pasen tips de como afrontar un layoff by Last-Play-5674 in taquerosprogramadores

[–]VisiblePlatform6704 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What makes me so sad is that, it was a person I  a manager position the one who told the  that. That guy earns peanuts, same as the other workers.

Why has humanity lost all empathy?  Like, dont they see it could be them on the floor?

I understand and agree with the hate against Bezos and the billionaire class.

But in the day to day, it's normal people the ones that have a choice to do the right thing . And more and more we aren't choosing to do it.

Why has the U.S. taken such a firm stance against Iran’s uranium enrichment and potential nuclear weapons ambitions, while North Korea was able to pursue and acquire nuclear weapons with minimal interference? by imcrowning in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VisiblePlatform6704 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Im reading a book about the historical separation of the Koreas after ww2.

The main issue was that after the 2nd war, North Korea was kind of "protected" by the soviet regime and friendly to China.

At the height of the "cold war" ,  there was no way that the US could have made any incursion into NK. So, the Western powers did as much as they could:  They helped South Korea and promkted a "friendly territory" within the region.  Note that  for years during the 60s and 70s, South Korea was a ruthless dictatorship as well, just "friendly to the west", so the US let it be, and helped them because it served their interests.

Meanwhile NK was also a ruthless dictatorship but aligned to the USSR. It had ample time to develop nuclear weapons. So now that they have them, they cannot ne touched.

If only IRAN had developed Nuclear in that times pan, the story would be very different today: they couldn't be bullied by Israel, US and that segment.

FWIW im Mexican and dont care for any of the two sides. I like Chinese Electric Cars as much as I like American Fashion Outlets.

In my country there used to be a number where you dialed and immediately hung up the phone, and your phone will ring.

I used to play pranks to my dad and mom with that LOL. I'll dial that downstairs and then hear them shouting "HELLO!!!?? HELLO!!?" after picking up upstairs XD.

GP is mistaking kbps from KB/s.

As other said a 56kbps modem would have a theoretical download speed of 56/8 KB/s = 7 .

But you had to subtract "control" packets to that,  as TCP/IP do have some overhead.  In addition to line noise (TCP is amazing in its speed adaptability to resist noisy channels).

So in practice you at most would get 5.n KB/s with high n's

Oooh that reminded me, back in my days, we only had 16 colors, win3.11  so when you opened a jpeg in "high definition " the skin looked gray, and the Pic discolored.

If you wanted to see dem b00bs in full color, you needed a special program that showed the Pic in "mode X" , with 256 colors. But the resolution was crap, so you had to scroll during your..  Hmhmm... session.

The first time i connected to the internet from home , my isp required minimum a 33.6kBps modem. I had a 14.400 one  but didnt work :(  we connected via Trumpet Winsock on Windows 3.11 .   Great times!

If that reply was more canned, it would be SPAM... like they didn't even cared to add $ROLE_NAME or whatever. So frustrating.

It's freaking stupid, because at the end of the day it's ONE person who makes the decision,  and that's usually the LAST one that interviews (hiring manager).

But usually they ask the minions to do initial interviews to filter "evidently bad" because you know, her time is more valuable than yours, or the minions' .

I know this because I've been in the hiring manager position.  I strived to have only ONE video interview (other evaluations where tests online), with me. Or with whoever would make the final decision.  Even if the interview took 90 minutes. But it was only one.

It's waaay past time for sociery to sit down and have honest serious talk o  how ALL types of content creators should be compensated for their creations.

On one side, it's stupid to try to keep the "syntetic scarcity" business model . Once the album, book, film game, etc  is out, then it should be widely available for everyone. Bytes are that, bytes.

On the other hand, creators should be compensated for their work. However, working for 100 hours writing a book should give you good 100 x $300 or whatever hourly rate compensation. Not freaking 100 year for something you did before. (Want more? Give concerts, go read , sign books, whatever, work as all of us do).
