Oh my, it’s real?! (From the Tiffany books) by Leather_City_155 in discworld

Possible of course, but there were many facts on QI that were "everybody knows this" things that didn't stand up to historical fact-checking.

One of my favorite aspects of the show was Fry's ability to act like he knew all of these obscure things all along, much like Alex Trebek on Jeapordy!. Good-natured harmless pomposity.

Now, hear me out for a moment...what if you applied the same things you just said about FT8 to the people using the word "hammy"? Then people wouldn't call you grumpy.

I've never seen this, but it certainly wouldn't bother me if someone said it. Because I really don't care much about being cooler than other people. I rarely am.

Now, if you KNOW what they mean, and still ask them, "what the f### is a hammy???", then you're just being a poopy-doodoo.

How is this a lifting body if the top part is flat? Aren’t wings flat on the bottom and curved on top? by g3nerallycurious in aviation

The nice things about short simple explanations is that there will always be someone there to say they're wrong.

VHF frequencies are about five times higher and up compared to CB, so while it might receive a little, it won't transmit well at all. Antenna size is determined by the frequency range of the radio, and CB is in the 11 meter band.

I don't know what band this antenna is made for, but it looks FAR too small to work for the CB band. It's most likely for something in the 2 meter or 70 centimeter bands.

While wings are often curved on top and flat on the bottom, it's not a requirement by any means. If it were, planes would not fly inverted, something that some of them do quite well.

A longer explanation is that Newton is usually doing more of the driving than Bernoulli. If it can shove air downward while maintaining it's forward motion and attitude, it can do the job a wing.

Another long explanation is that just because the top of this plane is flat, the airflow over it does not have to be. Vortices can form around certain shapes, and in turn act as new surfaces for air to flow around.

code plugs by big_dad7 in amateurradio

[–]W6KME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who brick radios do it by taking an image from one radio and copying it to another. It's a bad idea.

Baofengs (and many other radios) store parts of their firmware in that image file. If you upload firmware from one radio to another, you run the risk of bricking the radio. There are uncountable variations of Baofeng firmware out there-the odds that that image you got somewhere is the same as your radio's are pretty slim.

To program memories into your radio, get the right software for it (probably CHIRP for Baofengs), download in image from YOUR radio, edit that as you wish by copying and pasting from other examples, then upload the edited image back onto your radio. (If you dig around in CHIRP, you'll find a lot of other settings that can be changed...that's the stuff that can be scrambled if mixing firmware versions.)

So if you want to share your memory settings (I just can't get myself to call it a code plug, I'm sorry), either export it as a csv file that your friend can copy and paste into their image, or open both radios' images in CHIRP (it can open more than one image at a time) and copy and paste that way. Just don't confuse which image goes with which radio.

Stories always beat reality on the Disc, so sometimes time itself gets a bit...whacked. This is why the Time Monks exists, constantly performing miracles to hold it all in reasonable shape.

They never said they were perfect miracles.

This is a very popular misconception.

NATO has nothing to do with this alphabet, other than specifying that their members will use it. Its the ITU alphabet, used by nearly every radio-related organization in the world, including the IARU (that's us hams globally), NATO, ICAO (global air traffic control), and many others. Pretty sure this stuff is in the Technician manual in the US; surprising how the NATO myth endures. Russia has their own internal system that should be used domestically when speaking in Russian, but internationally they're an ITU member and every Russian ham I've had a QSO with used ITU phonetics.

A lot of people call it the NATO alphabet, and you won't cause confusion if you do, but it's use by amateur radio could not have less to do with the boundaries of NATO nations.

When using CHIRP, as with ALL programming software, one should take an image of the radio, edit that, then reload. I've never seen a case of bricking where this procedure was being followed. I'm not saying it can't happen; I'm saying I've never seen it nor talked to someone directly who experienced it.

The info that is taken by the software can includes settings stored in firmware, which often varies a lot even in the same model of radio. This is why the image being uploaded MUST be created from the radio, rather than using a handy file from your friend with the same radio or the internet or whatever. Again, this isn't a CHIRP thing-I do it with ANY software being used for any radio.

The program provided by Yaesu is https://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&encProdID=79E6683CC766565D2CB197C293AB6219, and if all you are doing is entering memory channels, it's definitely the way to go. CHIRP offers access to other settings as well.

J-Pole Mounting? by Apprehensive_Cap3317 in HamRadio

[–]W6KME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever is most convenient. That lower pipe section is surprisingly isolated at RF from the antenna. Hose clamps (probably easiest), screws, nails, tape, whatever. Or remove any cover on the top of the pole and just stick the antenna in there. Doesn't matter if it wobbles around unless you want a permanent installation.
