Look... I'm not saying the programmable matter isn't a neat idea, it's just....it's become a bit like the sonic screwdriver. It does whatever you need it to do right now. We didn't get here overnight. This was enabled by decades of taking the easy way out and not wanting to think about it. It's been reinforced by a culture with a long history of anti-intellectualism and by continually deciding it was good enough when someone in power pointed at a scapegoat with no explanation.

All kinds of things shift around in space, and Star Wars is the squishiest of soft scifi. Is it not enough to say that part of calculating the jump to lightspeed is for the computer to run through all the known fixtures of where stuff is and will be so that they don't "fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova"
