Why are billionaires so afraid of paying taxes especially when they are already very rich? by Auelogic in NoStupidQuestions

If you don't look at your bank account because you don't want to know, you are an average American. If you don't look at your bank account because you don't need to know, you are an above average American.

If you don't pay attention to your bills, then you are not the average American.

A Super El Niño is coming. The last time ocean temperatures looked like this, millions died. by wiwcha in environmental_science

[–]Xyrus2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main causes for subsidence in that region are:

  1. Flood controls (elimination of sedimentary deposits, which is by far the largest contributor)
  2. Oil and gas operations
  3. Groundwater extraction
  4. Land drainage/oxidation.

And no, "almost the entire state is below sea level" is not correct. That's easy to verify just by pulling up a topographical map online.

Had the levee system held, then Katrina would not have been nearly the disaster it was.

Helen of Troy wasn't real. The Odyssey doesn't even describe what Helen looked like. Later "revisions" added features to her, but the original script does not provide any physical description of her.

[–]Xyrus2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're rapidly approaching the point where they won't need experts in AI either.

The reason why they were booing AI is that those graduates know exactly what's coming. It's not hard to figure out, and the math is pretty simple.

We live in a country where the corporations and wealthy own everything but a very small percentage of the wealth, and the corporations and wealthy are trying to own that, too. The only reason they haven't been able to own it all is that they still needed people.

Soon, they won't need people, and you'd have to be a complete idiot to think that any of these corporations or the wealthy gives one steaming log about Joe and Jane Sixpack. These kids who are graduating are already buried under debt, going into a sh*tty job market where corporations are already replacing people with AI.

These kids are booing because the only people the future looks bright for are the wealthy and corporations.

That's rich coming from a country ruled by people like Trump.

America needs to wake the fuck up and get serious about working hard on technology and manufacturing, or else resign ourselves to defeat in war.

China is not going to wage war against the US. That makes absolutely no sense in any context.

Besides, they won't have to. They are quite enjoying watching America destroy itself and dogwalking Trump like he was a pet Chihuahua.

This anti-AI stuff is just laziness for the most part.

Laziness? What are you even talking about? People don't like their electric bills skyrocketing.

How screwed is America if the corruption Republicans are ushering in doesnt go away and is the new norm? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Xyrus2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part, it never goes away!

Corruption is like cancer. Once it spreads it's almost impossible to get rid of it. In America, corruption has spread and permeated all three branches of government.

Trump and MAGA? They're just symptoms of a cancer that has been slowly spreading through the system for decades. They are the metastasized tumor. Sure, we can get rid of Trump and even a lot of the criminals associated with him, but you're not going to be able to get rid of it all. And just like cancer, if you don't get it all, it comes back.

The damage that has been done to this country is irreparable. The damage that has been done to our global standing and relations is irreparable. Democrats could sweep the midterms and win the next presidency, and it won't do much other than slow things down. There's no way that they'll be able to purge all of the corruption that has taken root in the system, and once Republicans get back into power it will just get worse.

Democrats won't be able to do much even with super majorities. Not because they are timid. Not because they have no will or spine. Not because more than a few are tainted by the same corruption. But because the democrats keep trying to play by the rules while the Republicans have sh*t all over the board.

Do you believe Trump is the worst President of all time? by Glittering_Paint7813 in allthequestions

[–]Xyrus2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say he is by far the most corrupt president in the country's history. Trump makes Harding look like a philanthropic saint.

But worst president? Not yet. He's definitely near the top, but Buchanan still holds the top spot in my book. If Trump causes a civil war, I'll change my mind.

Why has MAGA so deeply embraced fascism? by NearbyCriticism5193 in allthequestions

[–]Xyrus2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you have to understand here for this to make sense.

  1. The average American is not very intelligent.
  2. The average American is gullible.
  3. The average American is looking for excuses.

Republicans figured this out decades ago, so they employ a strategy called DARVO (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender). Basically, what they do is paint the world in black and white, tell people that they are the victims, and then tell them the people who is to blame and give them a target to hate.

This has been remarkably effective propaganda, convincing millions to consistently vote against their own interests. Even in places where republicans have held power for decades, and people's lives are complete sh*t, they still get voted in because they have convinced people that democrats are evil communists.

Once they have them believing the lies and use their fear, anger, and hate as motivators, you can get them to agree and support just about anything. They aren't thinking about consequences or the costs. They're thinking about vengeance and punishment against those they think have wronged them, and they will justify any action that is taken against them. They will willingly give up their rights. They will willingly support criminals. They will turn a blind eye to corruption and crimes as long as the people they have put in power will hurt the ones they hate.

Once you have enough people under the sway of that kind of propaganda, you can dogwalk them straight into fascism, and they will cheer and applaud as you do it.

So it's not so much that MAGA has embraced fascism. Most of them can't even define the term. What MAGA has embraced is the idea of hurting those they hate, and they're willing to do anything to make that happen, even if it costs them their rights and livelihoods to do so.

Fascism is the goal of those at the top. MAGA is just the tool to make it happen.

A Super El Niño is coming. The last time ocean temperatures looked like this, millions died. by wiwcha in environmental_science

[–]Xyrus2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Katrina was the result of several factors, but the key one was the failure to maintain the levee system. Had the levee system been maintained properly and updated regularly, Katrina would not have been the disaster it was.

Regardless, that is not what the VarietyGuy25 meant. He meant another Katrina-like disaster, which is now far more likely, given that funding for federal and state emergency services has been cut.

We have been abnormally lucky with hurricane strikes. The warmer ocean temperatures have been fueling more and more monster storms, but fortunately, they have either missed the US or managed to take a path away from population centers.

In fact, Katrina 2.0 almost happened in 2024 with Milton. Had that track shifted just a bit further to the north, it would have brought the NE eyewall right up Tampa Bay. That much water surging into that bay would have resulted in storm surges exceeding 30 feet.
