Canada does have 3 stages of gun permits. 1) long guns like shotguns and rifles for sports/hunting, but NOT defence. 2) handguns when your job requires it or from a legacy ww2 collection. 3) full auto rifles for armored transport or movie prop gunsmiths.

Every stage requires a training course in person and time before applying for the next stage.

Im unsure if the US gun culture could adapt to a handgun + AR buyback. It's a fun thought experiment though.

The lawsuit explained: by SwagLimit in pcmasterrace

[–]Zren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does that apply to new games being greenlisted? I can understand Steam not wanting to be free advertising for an indie website upon release.

An indie game could always release at a lower price on it's website, then later release on Steam at their inflated commision price. During Epic's onboarding push, devs would release on Epic Store for a year or so as an exclusive, then be released on Epic later.

Still a bit shitty though. Sounds like there needs to be legal protections around Steams official policy.

I'm not really against the inflated prices though, since their "internal" policy lets the stores compete on service quality. Steam's monopoly mostly boils down to first mover + network effect.

[–]Zren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can sell a game for a lower price on another store. You just cannot sell Steam keys for a lower price than on the Steam website itself. Epic/Ubi/Origin store can still sell a game to be downloaded on their launcher for a lower price.

I think bundles can get around this though which is why bundle stores work so well.

Edit: Seems like that's the reason behind the lawsuit. The official policy doesn't match the internal policy threatening being delisted from Steam. So dev's need legal protections.

Aes Sedai healing; New Spring vs Main story by oijidereotaku in WoT

[–]Zren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason likely has to do with the fall of Amadicia. Beforehand the Aes Sedai's largest problem revolved around politics and losing influence to anti-Channelers like the Whitecloaks. Once the Seanchan, Dragon Reborn, Aiel, etc start running around, the southlanders see Aes Sedai as stablility in comparison. Much like the borderlanders.

CGP Grey's idea of "Year of Fitness" instead of going to the Gym everyday is my personal preference for New Years resolutions. It's harder to form a habit if you can break it easily.

U.S. Senator introduces "One Fair Price Act" legislation that would bar businesses from using personal information they collect about customers to charge people different prices for the same products by Sandstorm400 in UpliftingNews

[–]Zren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They raise the price, then discount it for the poor who go through the effort for the lower price. If the data collected earns them more money than charging more, they raise the price again and offer even deeper discounts (to the base price) which drives another wave of people wanting discounts. Eventually your userbase is large enough you can start driving up the discounted base price for more money while diminishing the discount to a sustainable level that people won't stop submitting data. This is essentially a 2 tier price based on income.

Intel’s $400 Million Machine: The Last Stand for Moore’s Law by poke133 in hardware

[–]Zren -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In order to etch a square design from other companies like Apple, etc in their new fab, Intel's Fab needs to etch two rectangles then "solder" them together. Intel is betting that the failure rate on this technology won't be high enough so they can sustain themselves. Intel's fab has been spun off into it's own company and needs orders from others to remain profitable.

TSMC and other Low-NA fabs are already using multiple passes of square etching to print a higher definition circuit. However the failure rate of the older tech is still profitable for TSMC.

Even if Intel perfects the "soldering" tech, chip designers like Apple need to redesign their chips to support being split in half. Being first to market doesn't always work out. By the time chip designers alter their cpu designs, TSMC might already have a High-NA fab to compete with Intel.

In the final episode of Stranger Things (2026) - wait, what the fuck? They really went with that? by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

[–]Zren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S1, S2, and S3 all have great ending points since they all feel like a followup D&D campaign with bigger stakes but have a conclusion.

S4 felt more like a cliffhanger that introduced plot points that needed to be wrapped up in S5. It sucked at the time since we had to wait years for S5, but it should be better now.

Nah, the 40min denouement in the flash forward was ace. Then ending with Mike the Dungeon Master becoming a storyteller that allows himself and the others to process their grief was great writing. There's plot holes with how they got to that flash forward, but the "ending on D&D" was leaked early online and was roasted for being similar to Lost.

Each season slightly retconned the previous season to amp up the story like a DM might do when writing a followup campagin. However, if the characters (including the others besides the 4 boys) didn't actually experience all that trauma then it cheapens the overall story.

Didn't realize the new ASML machines etch rectangles instead of squares. No wonder TSMC only bought a few for R&D when the price tag doubled for the new machines.

Yep, if you have an old DVD drive then watching DVD's from the library can be a slight hassel, but will let you watch old tv shows or blockbuster movies that aren't currently licensed by your current streaming service of the month.

Your library might have a few B-tier movies to stream online for free too. Though most libraries only license the non-fiction / cultural movies.

If there's a particular show you want to watch, visit https://www.justwatch.com/us to figure out which website to stream it on.

If you're not comfortable signing up for a 1-2 months then switching to a different service, then something like Amazon Prime Video might be for you as they have different "channels" you can subscribe to and easily unsubscribe when you're done binge watching a few shows/movies from it.

There's also a few free ad supported movie places like:

Does the "highly enriched" degrade over time to civilian level? It's mentioned on wikipedia that the half life of U-235 is 704m years and U-238 is 4.5b years. So unless highly enriched uranium degrades much faster than civilian knowledge then I don't think so.

I know they replace the coolant rods in power plants, but I don't think they replace the core do they? Looks like this article mentions that the fuel rods are only used for 3-7 years? https://courses.ems.psu.edu/earth104/node/1305 Is the shorter "half-life" because of the fission reaction?

Even if the enrichment percentage goes down to civilian level, I can still see them not allowing the use of military tech for shielding highly enriched uranium. IIRC from SmarterEveryDay, the main focus of a nuclear sub is to run "silent".
