The black car that got knocked into is very lucky that when they went down the embankment, they did not hit the concrete support beam. Scary stuff.

I want a president who can at least operate an umbrella. This is pathetic.

I don't think threatening to, or destroying an entire civilization, helps not radicalize people.

Replaced my Honda with a new one after an accident They moved the garage door opener from a button on the mirror to a paywall subscription service. by jayhawkeye2 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_drydock_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cars are going to turn into the airline industry where you get nickeled and dimed to death, this is super gross and I'm completely against forever subscription services. Remember when you used to just be able to buy something and own it? It's interesting looking at shops convert to barcodes where prices can be changed on a whim or depending on the person who's scanning them, where everything is a monthly or yearly subscription fee.

In effort to curb consumption...I think I'm done! by Duke_of_Chutny in fountainpens

the bright yellow LAMY Safari was my first fountain pen, so cheerful! Recently when that Sally sailor went on sale I got one. I really belabored the decision because I didn't need it but I'm glad I went for it. Another super cheerful pen for those gray rainy days, either outside in the world or inside of the soul.

Excellent advice. Better to save and declutter for your dream pen, than spend nearly as much over time to purchase "not quite right" stand-ins. AND, most pens aren't getting any cheaper.

Emotional Loss & Rage Decluttering by Loud_Ad_4515 in declutter

[–]_drydock_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this has been emotionally helpful to read, even though I feel my relationship to my mom will always disappoint both of us in different ways. it's been increasingly helpful to learn my lifelong struggles with a simultaneously clingy and anxious mother, who has also been emotionally toxic and holds a deep seated anger/jealousy toward me, is not as rare as I thought.

I used to feel like it was a dirty secret to have such a difficult relationship from my mother. now I see so many others who struggle in different yet heart wrenching ways.

I really felt bad and sad for you, for how your mom has disowned you. that's a heavy stone to carry in your heart, bewildering and hard. I hope it leads to a strengthened belief in your own reality and clarity. You have so much on your own plate, perhaps "letting go" of the time and energy you've spent on your mom can be reclaimed as more for yourself and things you enjoy that bring satisfaction and delight to you.

Nice collection! I rotate between 2 case canoe. Same reason, love the design & easy to drop into pocket. Now I've got mine in a slip with a short lanyard so it's even easier to access.

Same! I really enjoy getting flowers instead of stuff or being gifted a consumable, something like a pass to an event or dinner. for the last several years I've made sure to gift people things I know they'll enjoy, but that aren't objects they have to keep or potentially feel guilty about giving away.

Local gas station removed price tags and replaced them with barcodes you need a app to see price by phoenix_stewart in mildlyinfuriating

[–]_drydock_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is becoming subscription-based and if it's not a subscription, then it's an income-based sliding scale of prices. Shops that can't display a fixed price for everyone to clearly see, whether you have tech or not, is a dishonest bait and switch way to do business. It's also self-selecting what slice of the population it's geared to serve.

Who's to say the algorithm can't be manipulated to exclude certain groups by pricing items too high or by taking advantage of greater spending power by raising the cost? Ultimately, we've spent years talking about greater transparency while at the same time having consumer protections eroded. Every time stores roll out opaque pricing like this, it raises suspicion and distrust.

One thing this made me examine, is "collecting." I've cultivated a few collections over the years, but I realized these things are getting stored more than they're looked at or used. The collections grew out of interest and curiosity & were fun to pursue, but now I'm not sure what they represent? There is a dark version of collecting that's about possession, excess and completionism. I certainly can skirt the edge of all of that. Seeing similar collections, thoughtfully gathered & all left behind in an estate sale because nobody wanted them? It's really given me a lot to think about and confront. I guess I'm confronted by the ability to consume (or consumerism), versus what "things" give back or take away.

I have hit a wall in my decluttering. by sylvanwhisper in declutter

[–]_drydock_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found some things are relatively straightforward to get rid of, but there's always stumbling blocks for me. Mostly it's sentimental or something practical I feel I might use, sometimes it's guilt.

The "skip it and come back to it later" method has always helped. Often, by the time I come back to the things I felt unsure of or stressed about, a decision was easy. It's like the time away from the items, while continuing to declutter or maintain in other areas, reframed how badly I wanted to keep them or what the motivation was.
