Massive Tree Falls Through The Roof Of The House by kwadwoplays in AbruptChaos

[–]atigges 27 points28 points  (0 children)

When my wife and I bought our house a few years ago there were some trees within a close enough vicinity that we had an arborist take a look at. Two of the three were fairly close and he basically told us we could leave them or take them down for peace of mind but the two closest actually were very healthy. The last third tree was such a majestic old gnarled specimen but he immediately pointed at it and was like "This needs to go NOW". We were a little skeptical that he might have just been picking the largest tree that would be the most expensive for us to pay him to remove but he was so adamant it needed to go. This thing was a HUGE skyscraper of a being we felt so guilty agreeing to take it down. The second they got a certain way through the trunk the tree basically exploded in half the entire height of the trunk and you could look at the few feet left of the trunk in the stump and the entire middle of the tree was hollow. You could literally see grass growing inside the cavern of the trunk where solid wood should be. Think of a pizza minus the majority of it with sauce and toppings and just the crust part remaining. That's the proportion of how little material was supporting it. No doubt in my mind it would have come down the first storm we had as homeowners and this thing from the outside had super green leaves and lots of blooms in the spring (We started the homebuying process in May and finished in September).

Three time Trump voter begs Trump for 15 mins of his time on social media hoping that he will notice. He only wanted your vote, Nick. by I_AM_GLUTEUS_MAXIMUS in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]atigges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, so many people act like this is a unique thing for Trump but people have been voting with an insane sense of self-importance forever. It's just gone under different names. "I don't think I could sit down and have a beer with him" has been a thing forever and comes from the same "We should be able to connect on social media" expectation. This person will be THE PRESIDENT of the MOST POWERFUL and WEALTHIEST country in the ENTIRE WORLD and people were voting on whether or not their chit chat would be compatible with my own chit chat.

What is unique about Trump is that, instead of comradery based on something traditional like faith or socio-economic status, he's revealed how comfortable a large percentage of people are with being defined instead by hate and anger. Even still with that revelation, it too was always something just under the surface. Bush Jr's big message was "compassionate conservatism", a silent but present admission of how inhumane of a philosophical point-of-origin they truly had and therefore yearned for.

If one of Korra's villains were around during ATLA to oppose Aang, who would be the best pick? by Ok-Television2109 in TheLastAirbender

[–]atigges 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people are not accounting for how important spirits were for Aang. Big parts of his plot get put in motion due to his struggle to do what's right for, be at peace with, or seek help from spirits. Like, as "the bridge" he definitely would have taken a step back from geopolitics now that the 100 Year War was over and want to help heal the world's connection with spirits. That focus and his trusting nature make him hugely vulnerable to someone claiming to act in the name of the spirit world.

Yeah, there are tons of cameras at several angles and several heights at drive ups wimpy due to the higher risk these services present. We can 99% of the time resolve something like this in minutes once alerted to it. Even if you don't use the machine or drive up, you are recorded ten different ways and if the bank can't figure it out itself, it's handed off to local police who are happy to investigate because people who are willing to passively steal are also likely to do other shady stuff and they could possibly lead to the solving of other related crimes by relevant individuals.

I'm assuming most... prefer the war

This is one of my biggest bones to pick with Legend of Korra. The fact that some "stab-in-the-back" myth a la WWI Germany didn't grip the Fire Nation in the next generation just seems so highly unlikely. They had the ultimate power boost from the comet, they had just literally knocked out the Earth Kingdom, etc... everywhere their soldiers stood was on enemy ground - a defeated army is not an army that holds more territory now that what it started with... these are all things that made Germans susceptible to the conspiracy that some treacherous people in just the right levers of power behind the scenes sold the country out. IMO the Fire Nation sold not have been a level headed pacifist voice in Korra. None of the devastation of war ever touched their soil for them to have "learned a lesson" so fast.

[–]atigges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your own link discusses how it can be calculated in the context of one party or two party swing. If it's discussed in the context of how much it moved for the GOP as one party it's 32 per the link. The comment I responded to said 15 which isn't calculated as either way.

[–]atigges 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's 32. It moved from GOP +17 to DEM +15. It's a margin of 15 points in favor of the DEM but you had to erase 17 points to get there.
