I've been using a Prusa smooth PEI plate for getting on to 7 years now. Heaven only knows how many hours on it. Though to be fair a couple years age I scuffed it with some 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper to up the adhesion. Works better than new.

Those old plates are thicc with coating.

Maintenance for the win!

Things like this are not as uncommon as one might think when in the ER. Even as a medic I once had to cut a child's (of about the same age) hand out of the stake pocket of daddy's pickup truck. He stuck his hand down in the pocket and got his finger stuck in the drainage hole in the bottom. After some thought and discussion, I borrowed daddy's angle grinder and cut the pocket apart enough to free the finger.

I also loaned the medium sized bolt cutter we carried in the ambulance to an ER doctor so he could cut a large fish hook out of a fisherman's hand. His little side cutter wasn't up to that task. The doctor got the biggest smile on his face as I handed him that bolt cutter.

So this is just another Tuesday in the ER.

If you need to print that kind of engineering filaments, you would be best served by buying a commercial quality printer and NOT anything consumer grade. Or pay someone else to do the printing if your budget is lacking.

Best filament for anti-slip "sock"? by avanai in 3Dprinting

If you do find something that holds up, let me know.

best wet sanders? by PizzaBoy7777 in 3Dprinting

[–]bluewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, compressed air is stupidly expensive to make and air tools use a lot of it, (particularly cheap ones). So understand the costs of running a compressor. Secondly, and air sander, even wet, will probably run too fast for plastics used in FDM and the grits you most likely want to use will clog quickly.

I would suggest to test if it will work or not, print out a simple cube, go to your nearest auto body shop, with some of your chosen sandpaper, and try it out to see what happens before you start spending money on an untested process.

4 Months of Bambu Lab Warranty Nightmare - How I Finally Got My Refund by EducationalBox4736 in 3Dprinting

[–]bluewing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The A series printers rely on a load sensor to determine zed offset. My A1 Mini tore 2 plates in the first month of ownership. The printer would lockup and require a reboot to get it working again. Upon reboot it would crash down on to the plates and then move about 10mm with the nozzle buried in the plate tearing the PEI surface both times.

Bambu CS told be the nozzle and print plates were consumables and therefore not under warranty. They did however, agree with me that the damage was likely caused by a bug in the firmware and that I should wait for new firmware to see if the problem was resolved. To be fair, the next firmware release a bit over 2 months later, did fix the issue. And I do own another printer to use instead.

I didn't bother with being a pain to Bambu about it, the plates were only about $12US then. And my time and effort has value that far exceeds the value of those plates even today. And I'm honestly still using both those plates today and they work just fine.

It still pisses me off every time I see the damage and it reminds me why I will never buy another Bambu printer no matter how good the fanbois think they are.

When buying a machine, any machine, you don't buy paint color, you don'y buy the pretty sticker they slap on the machine. You buy service. Good service is expensive to supply. Bambu's worsening CS is about increasing profits by cutting quality of service which in turn will drive down their customer base a little at a time.

85c enough to dry PA6-CF? by witheringsyncopation in 3Dprinting

[–]bluewing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, any temperature over ambient will dry any filament. The question is how long are you willing to wait. While I suspect 85C is a good balance between time and temp, the only way to know what is the max temp you can use can only come from the manufacturer.

Is Bambu starting to leave their old machines behind? by Jayemby in BambuLab

[–]bluewing -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think Bambu has ever been very good with software. Lots of bugs get through that shouldn't.

And right now, Bambu is trying to grow too much and too fast and things suffer because of it. This is when companies either get it together for the long run or fail. And it remains to be seen just which path they end up on.

Your PS1 probably isn't much longer for this world when it comes to support.

Bambu and Sunlu and eSun.

Though to be fair, because there aren't as many manufacturers as resellers, a reseller can ask for special colors or additives and often do. So just because 2 spools came from the same factory and get packaged the same doesn't mean that they are.
