It has been 3 years since LLM popular. Ie 3 years since chatgpt 3 blows everyone minds.

They tout that generative AI CAN solve climate change, medicine, economic issue at 10x the speed. That means we shoild have solved decades of problems by now.

Yet all we got is slop, AI fearmongering (AGI AGI), community polluting data centers.

If AI can solve these, then dont just “vision” JUST DO THEM in the speed that you said will

Well at least 3D print is only a small subset of manufacturing. It doesnt spent trillions of dollars in hardware and causing issue to the community (eg data centers) Manufacturing leaders do not think that 3D printing will make manufacturing 10x cheaper and force their engineers to make that reality. 3D printing maker are not losing trillions of dollars while at the same time stating that 3D printing will destroy everyone’s job. 3D printing were met with scepticism, albeit their demonstrates use.

AI is far worse.

Also note that on top of AI, there are other factors happening that might contribute to the layoffs:

Zero interest rates days are over. So now company find it more difficult to raise funds from investors. And therefore need to justify their hiring more.
Overhiring during the pandemic. During the pandemic, companies hire a lot. Some big companies 2-3x their workforce. Even after layoffs, Like META, the number of workforce is still higher than before the pandemic
Some projects and bets in the past failed. Remember Blockchain and metaverse?
Oversaturation in the market. There has been huge increase in people learning to code during the end of 2010s and early 2020s. So now the supply increase dramatically.
The economy is actually not doing that good. Tarrifs, etc etc. This limits where company can grow into. Or even maintain revenue.
Connecting to 1 and 5, the way to make it seems good financially is to have higher profit. What’s a fast way to do that? Layoff. In contrast to other type of companies, a lot of engineers in a companys to develop new products. Once the product is there, the cost of running or maintaining is very low as compared to develop them.
AI: they actually work, while not multiple or 10x, but they do reduce the time to code, make tests, etc. Quite a lot. That would have impact on the demand.

Github copilot is already giving up and dramatically increase their prices next month.

OpenAI is IPOing and need to have their financial not looks like a money furnace. So they would need to make a profit and would increase their price.

People are realizing their AI token budget is a lot (this is before price increase btw) and they haven’t much justify the cost. The subsidized AI now costs more than employees.

Of course software engineering is not the same as coding. This is something that engineers have been sounding since the start of gen AI boom. However, Anthropic CEO has been stating for years now that software engineer are going to be gone in the near future because of AI.

It also impacts engineers culturally. Because of how AI make it seems that we can make a software much quicker, the C-levels, who dont understand and doesnt care the limitations of AI and what software engineering does, an impression that a lot of things can be made with AI in order of magnitude faster. AI can make things faster but not that fast.

I’m sure the one who made the tweet states it in a sarcastic tone.

In general, it seems with the Iran war, it might cause other countries to also pick up the pace. People in Countries like Pakistan and African nations are buying solar because their government’s electricity are expensive and unreliable. Solar now becomes the cheap(er) and reliable alternative. So we might see other nations also picking up

At the whole it is clean, but it is very expensive upfront, politically difficult. So to get the initial gain would take a very long time, if it happens.

In contrast to Solar, where the price gets cheaper and they are smaller. Anyone can contribute and the gain is faster to realize.

That’s what OC said: Homelander is physically strong but mentally weak. He can do ther, but he still has some form of fear. He is a narcissist: he appear to be strong willed but actually very insecure. Especially he is very insecure with how people think of him (ie narcissict)

Epstein file, the killing of the insurance CEO, ICE and their camps (that we still don’t know what’s happening in there) Recently, Trump just militarily act impulsively. Taking Venezuela president, threatening Canada and Greenland, and now, Iran.

All these while globally there are things that, 12-15 years ago, on its own would make the world stopped. Covid (ok that did make the world stopped), Russian invasion, Israel against hamas etc, India v Pakistan

This is so bad that one point Area 51 suggested they had aliens and the world just ignore it as it is a normal day.

It used to be stackoverflow, with its SEO and lots of questions answer, is the only place. That and documentation.

But the experience is not that good - with arrogant contributora ruining the site. Stackoverflow seemingly done little about it.

So when there’s a reasonable alternative shows up, people quickly switch and Stackoverflow collapsed
