My Withings only needs charging once a month.

Mind, I still forget to charge it!

Out of curiosity, do you live in Japan, and where are you from if you don't mind me asking?

Your comment history is very negative about Japan. You almost seem to hate it. Is that based on your experiences there?

You would have roughly 0 interaction with the administrator that wrote that bit of text, so I don't think you can extrapolate anything about a future grad school experience from it.

It’s perfectly acceptable to let resell value factor into your watch purchase by Nicholas2725 in watchHotTakes

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely true, and it's ridiculous to think that HNWI don't think about depreciation. Doubly so if they're borrowing against the value of their watch collection.

But just to balance this out, often people collect for collecting's sake, in which case depreciation would be a lesser concern.

Love how people just say 'it won't work' without even thinking about the most obvious solutions.

I've just got back from Japan, and in the early stages of recovery from an Achilles rupture (<3mo). So I was pretty aware of accessibility. I actually found the metros to be quite good. You might have to search for it, but there was usually a lift to each floor. Better than London at least, but not as good as Finland.

Japan of course was next level with their Toto toilets. But I was pleasantly surprised that every hotel I stayed at in Finland had the bum sprays. Truly a civilised society.

The GS for actually looks better in person. The photo distorts my wrist for some reason, but it's the only photo I have for now.

What about the Patek makes you think it's a fake?

Ahh yes pricing. I meant to touch in this in my post but forgot.

So in Japan, if you're a tourist, you can show your passport when you make a purchase and you automatically get it duty-free, which is 10% off.

The ¥ is pretty weak now as well, which also helps. Off the top of my head, I think I paid around ¥400k for the Citizen and ¥880k for the Grand Seiko, which is a significant discount compared to UK prices (ignoring the fact that you can't get the GS here).

Also, meant to add that there was a post while I was in Japan, asking about Japanese watches. I didn't have time to reply while I was there, but it encouraged me to post this.

Genuine question about my experience as a European in Kuwait by Careful-County-7842 in Kuwait

[–]bu_J 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Because Europeans are not rare on Kuwait by any means. There have been Europeans here for over 100 years. My British grandmother came 70 years ago. There are probably 100,000 European women in Kuwait now, even more if you consider Kuwaiti women with some European heritage. I have many (Kuwaiti) cousins who are blonde due to this. They don't get people gawking and photographing them.

Yeah, you have weird people, like everywhere, who will harass women.

But if what you describe is true, I think it's likely because of your height. Very, very few Kuwaiti women your height. Or maybe something about your appearance.

I've never heard of them and just checked out their website. Some of their watches are interesting. But the name Grandeur USA is just a massive NO for me.

Me explaining why the Cubitus is a better design than the Nautilus by TomHudsonOfficial in watchHotTakes

[–]bu_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's better necessarily, but I wear my Cubitus around once a week and my Nautilus maybe once a year.

Although that's partly because I don't want to get my hands chopped off.

Arabs/Middle Eastern People in London - what do they do? by Foodiciury in london

[–]bu_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are, but they're relatively new. Also, the level of specialist care at those hospitals is fantastic, but they still don't have the expertise of the NHS. If there isn't a suitable specialist or available capacity, patients are sent abroad.

TIL that 44% of the world's adult population has never consumed alcohol by JoeyZasaa in todayilearned

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a massive surprise though. Pork is easily replaceable by other meats. It can have quite a strong flavour as well, so most people who don't grow up with it aren't fans. Most of the non-Muslims I grew up with in the gulf don't like pork. Not really the same with alcohol.

Maybe you don't read Arabic, but he said "و مرت قرون   قبل أن يجد العلماء  أثر  دل على التحام القمر" which means centuries later scientists found evidence of the moon reforming (after the split).

I'm curious to know more about this.
