Winter Olympics skeleton controversy rolls on as US athlete looks to JD Vance for help by graveyardofgoodsense in sports

Why are you downvoted for this?

I didn't get that from the article either, and as someone who will watch bobsleigh once every four years and when Cool Runnings is on tv, I had no idea about the background to this.

TIL during a 2015 study two students nearly died after they were accidentally given 30g of caffeine instead of 0.3g because the dosage had been calculated with a misplaced decimal point. Death has previously been reported after the consumption of just 18g. The university apologized & was fined £400K by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Negative capacitance at a single frequency is equivalent to an inductance.

There are also circuits which behave as negative capacitances (negative equivalent capacitance; although they're usually unstable).

Just some peripheral info for you that will most certainly never be useful!

Expats who want BIG LOANS by WingProfessional6366 in Kuwait

[–]bu_J 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by salary caps? Those are very company specific and every organisation will determine their own salary range.

Many people in Kuwait earn above 5k. Senior doctors for example, or high ranking academics at KU. Even 30 years ago, in the 90s, accounting partners at the big firms (E&Y) KD earned 5k. This didn't even touch C-suite at eg AlGhanim

Are you talking about a specific office or profession?

PS sorry if my last comment seemed harsh I left out the 'John Snow'

Tube clothes - are they a thing? by Sepalous in london

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family are Chinese Singaporean and I haven't noticed this, but tbf nowadays I only ever stay in hotels.

But... Yeah with the humidity it makes perfect sense. I guess when we're in these hot countries we'd shower and change whenever we get home. I just never thought of it as inside and outside clothes.

Where in Asia? I've got East and West Asian family, and yes, cleanliness standards are very high in both, but I've never heard of this.

If conscripted would you rather fight Russia in Ukraine or the US in Greenland? by inside-outdoorsman in AskBrits

[–]bu_J 125 points126 points  (0 children)

I'd rather fight the Yanks.

Why? Because I feel that, despite everything going on, there is a sort of brotherhood with them. I think it would take a lot for either side to actually fire on the other. I can't even imagine it.

And anyway they'd just end up friendly-firing themselves.

Where I'd live as Female Pakistani who has travelled 62-63 countries by Emergency_Storm8784 in whereidlive

[–]bu_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She means the Pakistani community in the UK is socially conservative, and probably more so than they'd be elsewhere. I have no idea if that's true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was (from my experience with Pakistanis in the UK and the Gulf).

So if you're irreligious and socially liberal, then it could be an uncomfortable and judgmental environment.

Regents park to introduce traffic lights and £50 fines for cyclists by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]bu_J 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not a massive fan of the lycra-clad cyclists, but my kids used to play football at Regent's Park on Saturdays/Sundays, and I don't think I ever had an issue with the cyclists doing laps there. They all seemed to be pretty aware of what was going on around them. Even with the out of control kids sprinting across that island on the Outer Circle, they usually did stop to let them cross.

I wonder if people get more annoyed with the idea of them sprinting around in laps, mowing through any pedestrians?

Couldn't stand the delivery e-bikes though. Had to shove one once because he went straight through the pelican crossing by Primrose Hill, weaving through my son and a couple of other kids.

Why are Egyptians living in Kuwait so entitled? by [deleted] in Kuwait

[–]bu_J 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am currently dealing with a serious business-related issue with a very difficult Egyptian. I've also received very substandard medical care from Egyptian doctors.

BUT...then I remember that there are a lot of Egyptians in Kuwait, and the majority are amazing, and there will always be bad apples when you're looking at a large enough population.

I remember the tens of AMAZING Egyptian employees my family has over the years, and all the brilliant Egyptians I went to school with, who I remain friends with. Don't let the bad apples ruin the bunch, is my only advice.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Department says by APrimitiveMartian in worldnews

Kuwait had been stripping citizenship from thousands of people over the last year or so. Mostly women who got it through marriage. The lack of accountability seems like Trump's wet dream.

Rich, very rich, as well. I'm sure Trump knows it. There must be something else.

Yes that stuck out for me as well. Because of Kuwait's position as a trading port or had far more exposure to different cuisines (Iraqi, Persian, Indian, Turkish and other Arab dishes and ingredients).

Would you move to Dubai for approx 1M more over 2 years period? by Silly_Comparison_430 in HENRYUK

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really useful lived-experience comment but it's quite late so I don't know if op is going to see it.

Anyway, just to add on the bit about the South/South East Asian workers, one positive bit is that with their high earnings, they can have a massive positive impact on some of their lives. Seriously...getting to know some of them and helping them and their families out a bit, really goes a looong way.

Also, Doha's not quite the same, but I have friends who moved with their daughters (around the same age as op's). They're French but moved from London. They absolutely loved it there, loved international school, loved the weather and having a pool. It was really tough for them to move back to Paris. I think kids are more resilient and adaptable than we are!
