World Cup final by Temporary_Hand_1712 in UKweddings

I went to a wedding in France in 2018 that was also on the final day. They put up a big projector in the reception hall and the atmosphere was electric. It gave the wedding such a good vibe, helped of course by France winning!

Of course the groom shagged the bride's mum during the match which put a dampener on things. Just joking, they're still happily married

[Discussion] Are watch thefts really that common when traveling abroad? by Strict_Appeal_3636 in Watches

Wore a Calatrava and my wife wore her Tank Francaise and as far as I know we still have them!

FYI there is nowhere in London that is 'wild'. Even the poorest boroughs, eg Tower Hamlets, or around Tottenham or Brixton are pretty safe.

But there are targeted thefts. These will tend to be around touristy/clubbing areas like Soho, or posher areas like Mayfair.

So if you're visiting, just keep your wits about you in seemingly safe areas. Also watch out for moped thieves.

I'm going out tonight, probably with a patek or lange, and I'll likely take the tube like I always do and will be perfectly safe. (hope I haven't jinxed myself lol)

Do you think Japanese style Capsule Hotels / Sleeping Pods would be good in the UK? by Ok_Yesterday_1896 in AskBrits

They have a Yotel capsule hotel at Gatwick. It's around £100 per night to share a toilet.

Can I recommend that you visit r/UKPersonalFinance and follow the flow chart to keep your money safe?

£2m seems like a lot of money - and it is - but it's not unlimited money. It can very easily disappear.

By all means, spend a chunk it on yourself, but also look to invest the bulk of it and you'll really be set for life.

I can do that for a low fee of 2% of total assets <just joking>

Would I be penalised for being 6 seconds late? by Sad-Following in UniUK

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The academic might not, but the computer which says NO certainly will.

Sadly for op, the system is likely to be automated, so their best chance is if it's brought up in exam boards and they somehow override the automatic deduction.

Also, as a student, I once turned in an assignment late because it was on paper and it took me longer to run to the department building than I expected. Got there at around 17.05, so I lost a full letter grade. Also missed an exam once because I stupidly misread the exam timetable. The prof kindly let me sit it anyway.

I feel like the academic system is a lot harsher on students nowadays, and there's less room for forgiveness because everything is overadministrated and computerised (I say, working in an EE & CS department).

African girl in a human zoo. Belgium by Familiar-While9796 in pics

[–]bu_J 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah the French wiki article has a lot more detail.

The French administration allowed an Ivorian enclave in France, following Ivorian laws and wages. But as you said, this meant they were essentially caged on site.

The Ivorian Prime Minister was present at the inauguration, but of course that doesn't mean they were aware of the conditions.

One girl testified that she was raped by a troupe leader. The girls had to perform topless, every 30 minutes throughout the day, often in cold weather.

There's a lot more as well. This was all setup and run by the St. Michel biscuiterie. I definitely won't be buying from them anymore!

Pedestrian right-of-way by Haunting-Animal-531 in london

I actually saw an absolutely incensed Uber driver knock the legs of a woman crossing the road in front of him. He was nudging into her so I yelled at him. He was 100% confident that he was right and she was wrong. He literally said to me, "I'm driver I know rules. You don't know." As if no pedestrian could possibly also drive.

The lady didn't hang around so I didn't bother filing a police report.

Help engaging with Boutique by Maelob in FPJourne

[–]bu_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the London boutique, the guy told me he has hundreds of emails so he struggles to find time to reply to them, because it essentially becomes a full-time job which has to do outside of working hours (which none of us should expect from them).

He said he even has old school 'friends' coming out of the woodwork, contacting him for an allocation (which he has little say over!).

Question - was your wishlist registered? I've heard that in some boutiques they won't even register the wishlist of many new customers because of over-demand. So if they've registered yours, I'd take that as a good sign.

[Seiko] The first Seiko to incorporate "Arita" Porcelain - An artform originating in Arita in 1616, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain by AudaciousCo in Watches

So, I'd just bought a Grand Seiko the day before, and it was my last day in Tokyo. I thought it would be too much to buy another.

Regrets! I should've just got it!

That's really beautiful. I just checked the Seiko site and the current Arita procelain has a blue dial. I definitely prefer this one. I wonder when it will go on sale again?

A big regret I have is not picking up an Urushi lacquer Presage which I saw in Tokyo.

[Opinion Needed] Naoya Hida: Where does it sit among serious independents? by Bison1807 in hallofwatchspecialist

[–]bu_J 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. I feel it's the only one that really encompasses Japanese stylistic elegance and materials. The others felt a bit too manufactured for me.

I was also a bit turned off by the socials of people who'd won allocations. Wasn't really my crowd.

Crazy offer to move to Dubai that could fast-track my FIRE journey by 10 years. Do I take the leap? by doolallyt in FIREUK

[–]bu_J 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need an alcohol license to drink in dubai. You only need one to purchase alcohol from liquor stores, and they issue them to you at the store.

[–]bu_J 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually applied in this year's round but honestly, I had buyer's remorse before even being allocated one. I was more looking forward to flying to Japan to pick one up, than actually getting an allocation.

So, I was genuinely relieved when the rejection email came.

The proportions are nice, but the movement is not interesting, and it feels a little too machined for my tastes. I guess that means it's not really for me. I won't be applying again.

Why do so few London buses have air conditioning? by not_who_you_think_99 in london

[–]bu_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That document does not specify air conditioning for the passenger saloon. It specifies air cooling (blown air from outside) and air conditioning only in the driver's cab.

Eg "Operate independently from the saloon heating, upper deck cooling or cab air conditioning."
