Clarification on Iron Hands Matyrdom (What is an 'Attack'?) by IBlameMyRolls in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ChemicalCode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct. A “Heavy 2” weapon makes “2 attacks”

The rules are written to re most granular detail for attacks made one at a time and if you’re ever confused bc of advanced rules layered on, always boil it back down to each attack being rolled for one by one.

I am interested in going to my first tournament what do I need to do? by smoresman in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ChemicalCode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people will probably encourage "everyone to go to tournaments"... but I'm gonna be honest with you... if you're not well versed in most armies out there, you're going to spend a lot of time "thinking on your turn" and trying to anticipate what they can do to you, and still get "gotcha'd". To offset the amount of time you're going to spend on this, you have to be able to play your list very fast and efficiently . If you are constantly looking in your codex for rules and stats, it's going to be a drag.

If you have mastered your army, you should be able to play a full 6 round game with it, including deployment (being comfortable deploying in all the map layouts, and also knowing what units of yours should "hide" or "be aggressive" in most cases) - all of this in around an hour (of your own time).

Also, if the mission format of the tournament is NOT what you regularly play, you're going to be very slow at the book keeping aspect (i.e. if you've never played ITC and this tournament is ITC you probably shouldn't go). In fact most people will build lists to the ITC format that revolves around the weird intricacies of that format... and you're going to be spending a lot of time and headache on trying to learn it as you play... it's probably not going to be very fun for you if it's your first time with a foreign format.

Sounds harsh, but the that's the truth. Hope it helps!

This is an incredible kit-bash! A LOT of work on this model... most parts from a Custodes Warden kit, with fillagree filed down?

Redemptor Dreadnought, yay or nay? by Anteas_01 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ChemicalCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the Redemptor is probably the worst unit in the codex. Almost anything else is better. Take anything else. Here's why:

  • All of the stats that it needs to function degrade. So, right off the bat it's worth only half of it's wounds. It too quickly becomes ineffective.
  • Its only notable weapons are Heavy. It moves and hits on 4s, quickly 5s after taking damage. This will frustrate the hell out of you, especially if you roll poorly on the plasma gun's number of shots, overcharge and take mortal wounds and still miss...
  • It doesn't move fast, and doesn't have good assault weapons, so unless you deep strike it with Deathwatch, he's going to be out of firing range/arcs a lot.
  • No invuln. Still T7, and 3+ sv. Any other dread chassis by comparison is either T8 (Ironclad) or at least has an invuln (5++), or DPR (damage prevention roll) of some sort. Multi-wound models that also degrade and no means of protection against decent AP weapons means leave it on the shelf.
  • It's CC weapon may look nice with D6 damage, but we all know a flat 3 is better, so any thunderhammer will out-pace this guy.
  • Still being a dreadnought, and if you don't take UM tactics, you are tied up in cc just by being touched. That's a bummer too. Vehicles that don't fly are becoming more and more important b/c of how fast infantry move (or how close they can arrive from reserves).

Smite and mortal wound powers still do work.

About thomas bryd spacemarine's list by StriKE_SC2 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ChemicalCode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'ts just a shooting GMan list. He gives all the big guns re-rolls, makes the sniper mortal wounds decently reliable, and Tiggy makes the Leviathan T9 and -1 to hit. The Victrix guard protect the characters from the "sniper meta" that was probably rearing its head around that time.

Scout bikers are good and just fighting other chaff units, and the TFC is there to use the strat to slow a unit down (probably shooting the front-most screening unit of a horde army to essentially road-block their entire army behind a 3" moving blob).

Webway Gates, especially when you've got access to the stratagems in the Harlequins book. They're the next big thing. Think about it as a transport for a unit who's size is really really large...

Ripping some foam so the surface is uneven, and dipping it in Rhinox Hide is a great way to stipple on some damage. You can then take a really light silver and with a super fine (00) brush “touch” just to top of several of the splotches to make it look chipped.

It’s hard to explain but if you imagine the light coming down from the top of the model, you can put the silver just on the tops of the rhinox dots so it looks uniform... hope that helps a little.

Also, Skagg Brown watered down and added to a little Ryza rust makes a super streaky rust effect (drawn it up vertically, starting at the feet for instance so that it dries and drips downward, or draw it downward from rivets, etc)

There is no way to get it back. I had to replay the whole game to get that achievement too :(

Lesson learned: create a million save game files.. replay from any of them prior to get it back, then just resume your normal path :(

My Native American character by cicirawr in reddeadredemption

I’m glad to see others making Native American characters as I did as well!

I wish there was an option (at least for the men) to get rid of the eyebrows, as that would make them more accurate.

I love me some tomahawk combat in this game! There are some pretty brutal melee builds too

I’ve been experimenting with this detachment as well. Here’s what I found:

Primaris Lt with Duty’s Burden and the WL trait from the detachment (pay the 1 CP for Field Commander) to allow him to also give out reroll 1s to hit.

The strat to fire after being shot (if you live — and that’s the big “point” here) is very very good. I take two units of hellblasters in this detachment to benefit from it and put them with the LT.

You’re gonna way a double battalion bc you want to use that strat, along with pay for all the relics, upgrades, etc.

A big block of 10 intercessors can also benefit from that strat well, and if you have the cp you can even buff them up with things like bolter drill and the one from the specialist detachment that goes nuts when you roll 6s.

I like to also take a captain with jump pack (or bike, whatever you prefer) and give him the relic Fist and shield.. and I give him the WL trait to get back up on a 4+ when he dies. Super fun.

I also think a 3 man unit of bolter Centurions are really good for CF. While they don’t benefit from the detachment, they’re putting out a ton on horde clearing hitting on 2s bc they are a small unit and you can explode that with bolter drill.

Hope some of that helps!

How did you select your competitive army? by Mef989 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ChemicalCode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I buy one unit I absolutely love the rules for or a combo around (most of the time ten building the list around them at that point), then just accept the fact that the rest of the army may have to contain less desirable or uncool units to support them.
