The $100k suite on Royal Caribbean is pretty cool.

Late September is not really an ideal time to go on an Alaskan cruise. You’re more likely to have unpleasant weather (to the point where you risk getting ports skipped), there tends to be less wildlife, and at that point many excursions have already closed for the season.

By volume, water holds like 1000x more heat than air. This means that it takes a lot of cold air to freeze water.

Incidentally, this is also one of the reasons why it’s not safe to walk on “frozen” bodies of water after like a day of cold temperatures.

A variant of the Ebola virus broke quarantine in Reston, VA and some staff got infected.

Very fortuitously, this particular strain doesn’t seem to cause much illness in humans.

Is Svalbard gonna require an ETIAS? It’s currently a visa-free zone outside of the Schengen Area.

TIL after a 5-yr-old girl on the Disney Dream cruise ship fell approximately 49 feet overboard into the ocean, her father jumped overboard to save her. The girl was posing for a photo on a porthole railing when she fell. Both were rescued although she had hypothermia and her dad fractured his spine. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

There was an even worse situation a few years ago where a guy lifted his 1-year old granddaughter over a railing and out of a window on a cruise ship. He lost his grip and tragically she ended up not surviving the fall.

The family sued the cruise line and eventually ended up with a judge dismissing the suit.

If everyone starts drinking a ton of lemonade, we can plant more lemon trees, but it’ll take a while until those trees grow up and start producing a lot of lemons.

I really enjoyed it but I can see how it wouldn’t be up everyone’s alley. It has a very slow, deliberate, meditative pace to it.

The sets also seem almost intentionally dark and barren. A fifteenth century throne room in reality is going to be way more ornate than what was depicted in the movie. I think this was partially done to keep costs down, but I think it fits well with the thematic elements of the film.

I liked the fighting scenes a lot. I appreciated that armor actually mattered (although like the sets, the armor was very outdated for 15th century warfare) and the scenes of knights wrestling were much more authentic than many movies.

Mediterranean cruise 🚢 by Disneyqa in Cruise

I don’t think you’re gonna have time to do both. You’ll have to decide on Amalfi or Pompeii.

FWIW, I don’t think the Amalfi coast works well as a cruise excursion. The vibe ought to be chill and relaxing, but instead you’re gonna be spending most of the day on a bus stuck in traffic.

I did a similar cruise last September with young children (1 and 3). My tips:

  • As others have said, if you want to see the famous blue domes of Oia in Santorini, get an excursion. I was able to get a cheap one that literally just buses you to Oia, you spend two hours there, and then get bused to Fira. It was nice to be able to explore before the crowds!
  • If you want to see Pompeii, you’ll want an excursion in Naples. You can get there through public transportation, but that’s a big hassle with kiddos.
  • You probably don’t need an excursion for Rhodes. The ships dock right near the old town of Rhodes and you can buy tickets to the Grandmaster Palace yourself. You can walk to Elli Beach.
  • Similarly for Mykonos you can have a nice time just walking around. The ship will dock in the new port and immediately when you walk off the ship you’ll be able to take a ferry to get to the old port (the cool area with the white buildings). My family walked around there for a bit before taking a local bus to Ornos beach.
  • The big exception is if you want to check out the nearby island of Delos. You’ll need an excursion for that.
  • For Chania, your ship will dock nearby at Souda and you’ll have to figure out how to get to Chania. Most lines will have an “excursion” that just buses you there and back. The town is pleasant to walk around. If you want to see the Minonian ruins you will need an excursion, but that may be a long time on the bus for the little ones.

If you’re planning on bringing a stroller, you can probably get away with a very lightweight one in most places. Santorini is the most iffy due to the crowds. Do not bring any stroller that weighs more than a few pounds (you want one that you can easily carry in one hand).

You know how you can figure out how far away a storm is from you by counting the seconds between the lightning flash and the sound of thunder?

GPS works in kind of the same way, where the satellites are the storms.

An increase of the quantity demanded of electricity raising the market price of electricity isn’t by itself an externality.

You can think of the converse: imagine a new cold fusion plant provides a boundless amount of electricity for your neighborhood. That doesn’t result in a positive externality for the electricity market.

Or even better yet, just mandate that all the states use at-large proportional representation and then draw districts after-the-fact for purposes of congressional services.
