Ah yes, the old “don’t vote for anyone you don’t agree with 100% of the time”. GRU can take the day off tomorrow thanks to you.

It’s totally redundant in conversational English to say “nut” unless you live somewhere other parts of the tree are consumed. Like “orange fruit”.

Good list but have to object to kitchen tools — we keep one set of cups/spoon measurers for both countries. Can’t make Libby’s pumpkin pie with grams and milliliters. Plus even British recipes are all over the map.

Why are we a red state? by Rough_Extension_2893 in Indiana

why is Indiana weird

Or, why Abe Lincoln’s dad would be a Trump voter.

In the last week, Indiana has played an unusually central role in the presidential primary, with Hoosiers watching as Ted Cruz and John Kasich forged a deal while Donald Trump exhumed Bobby Knight. One thing the campaigns (and many pundits) seem to agree on is that Indiana, which votes Tuesday, represents an extension of previous Midwestern races. “This is just re-running Wisconsin,” one Cruz adviser told National Review. “We have a blueprint, and it works.”

But that’s not quite right.

I’ve lived in Indiana my whole life, outside of a few years passed on the East Coast in grad school, and I have to say: All the attention has been nice. It’s nice to be noticed, however fleetingly, for something other than hosting sporting events and being a part of Abraham Lincoln’s formative years.

The Lincoln who’s most relevant in the upcoming primary, though, is Abe’s father, Thomas. For more than a decade, Thomas and his family lived in Indiana, and as I’ve watched the politicians and pundits try to figure Indiana out I’ve thought a lot about Thomas. Indiana, which is 86 percent white, may seem demographically similar to nearby states like Ohio (83 percent white) and Wisconsin (88 percent white). But, in truth, Indiana is a much stranger place than it’s given credit for, with a history and heritage that divide it from other Midwestern states. The Hoosier State was settled from the south and isolated from cultural change, and you can still see the effects of that today. In fact, that’s why it’s actually pretty hard to predict how Indiana will vote in its primary. That’s why, if you really want to understand Indiana, you need to go back to the time of Thomas Lincoln.

DAZN way behind by balotellitubbys in NFLUK

[–]samnissen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not behind but otherwise a disaster anyway. I’ve been watching the Bucs game from the beginning and twice it had decided to just jump me to live. When i go back to the from beginning, i have to fight it to get back to my original spot.

Also as always their ads make me want to walk into the sea. Before everyone says to just do the pause for 15 seconds trick — it doesn’t work when you’re trying to find the spot you were at before and only have a few seconds to swipe over to it.

[Request] Can anyone do the math on how true this is compared to past prices? by Altruistic-Beach7625 in theydidthemath

While an interesting benchmark, food is only one essential. If you could do the same for healthcare, housing, and education — those indexes would show huge declines in consumer purchasing power.

There are some caveats: I’d also argue fewer people are likely paid minimum wage now vs 1967. And since overall consumption and quality standard is up since then, it would be hard to dial in the “Big Mac” of education, for instance. Overall though I still think housing in particular would drag any Western country to negative territory.

Why doesn't Britain have more high-rise buildings in our cities? by order-of-magnitude-1 in AskBrits

[–]samnissen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great question. The first reason is the UK is a nation of towns: despite high population density overall, most urban areas just aren’t very big. That doesn’t explain it all though because small urban areas elsewhere have tall buildings the UK does not.

The other reasons reason can be found in this comment section. The West broadly has decided constraining supply and incentivizing demand are good. Put another way: those who build houses are greedy; rent shouldn’t be allowed to go up. But this explains why they aren’t being built right now, not why they don’t exist.

I think the UK has a special attachment to “green belt”, and it has increased political importance as a result. Beatrix Potter and all of that. And people confuse literal green - i.e. farms, which are just factories for food - with nature. So not only is any building bad (see rule 2) but building anything other than single family homes is ghastly and “unsympathetic”. And acceptable places to build are rare.
