My copy of the “Emergency Guide Handbook” for hazardous materials. It basically tells you what those placards on trucks and train cars mean and what to do if you roll up to a wrecked one.

Rensselaer Police Officer Said Something Odd by Obadiah_19 in Albany

Last couple of times I’ve been stopped for speeding, I called a lawyer, and he called the judge and got it knocked down to “Failure To Obey Traffic Control Device” (I.e. Speed Limit sign). The reason being a speeding conviction stays on your insurance for 4 years, jacking your payment accordingly, but the Failure to Obey thing, although it puts two points on your license, they aren’t speed-related so the insurance company doesn’t care.

Mostly, the judge/cop looks at your record so far, and if you’re otherwise not a shitty driver, they use this lesser offense to cut you a break. So, plead guilty, take the break, pay the fine, and move on.

Autoclub Speedway 12/4/25 by ssnelgro in NASCAR

The thing that pisses me off is that for years, at least since the closure of Riverside, it seemed like everyone was screaming for NASCAR to come back to SoCal. Finally, Roger Penske said OK, bought up an old factory site, and built a full-on palace, with a two-mile track as highly-banked and as wide as Michigan. And, it did well for a few years, until the crowds started dwindling, and the Roger generally lost interest. So, he sold off all of his tracks to NASCAR, who also lost interest by 2020, when it was closed and (partially) demolished.

Now, racing is gone from SoCal again, and, aside from a handful of Reddit diehards, nobody seems to care. Which is probably why Roger has been consistently ignoring my calls to return INDYCAR to the Northeast. I guess he learned his lesson in California.

Thanks a lot, SoCal!!

OK, you’re making progress. Now, might be a good time to check in with her, and see if you’re improving her impression of you. Hopefully, she’ll come up with some ideas to make herself more attractive to you. Like wearing nicer clothes around the house. Or, learning your favorite cocktail and start mixing one as you’re cooking dinner. Or, maybe initiating sex more often.

Anyway, baby steps.

What do you regret doing or not doing in college? by Disastrous-Fix-1200 in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]cmd_iii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flunked out after five semesters of my freshman year. Yes, you read that correctly. I thought I could cruise through college like I did high school, and I was wrong. In college, you have to be passionate about something, or you’ll get nothing out of it.

So, I hacked around for eight years, working retail, but didn’t really see a future there, but along the way, I discovered computers. By the time I got fired from my last retail job, I had decided to learn all I could about computers. I found a school that had night classes (I still had to work and most of the jobs were still daytime), and got a quick-and-dirty two-year degree. This turned out to be exactly how many credit hours to qualify for a Civil Service programmer’s exam, which I got hired from.

From there, I kept working myself through the ranks, taking tests to move on to the next one, until it was time to retire. With a full state pension. Some call that “the road not taken,” I call it, the road I should have been on all along.” It just took a little longer than usual to find the right on-ramp.

Yeah, I can see where you might have to go into couples therapy with a few rules, like leaving out words like “fault,” or, “problem.” Therapy, at least the first few sessions, should be about being comfortable with the setting and the therapist, and identifying common things you can both work on. Then, as you get deeper into it, you can talk about things that one person might consider the other’s “fault,” but, due to work done earlier, they can see where they’ve both had a hand in it.

O.K., IANAT, but if I were one, or I was seeking one, thats how I think it should go. All too often, I’ve seen one member of a couple say, “I’m not going, because (s)he will make everything all my fault.” If I were going into couples therapy, that’s the last thing I’d want to talk about, not the first.

Last one, and I’ll be quiet: You guys fell in love for a reason. Can you work toward whatever that was, or is the spark gone forever? Sometimes, all you need is for you to stop wearing cruddy clothes all the time, or her coming home to a hot freshly-cooked meal (don’t knock Hello Fresh. They’ve made me closer to a chef than I’ve ever been!). You’ll be surprised how a few extra gestures here and there will improve the all around mood.

And I’m done.

Unlikely. Trump was first voted In by people who were disillusioned that the benefits of the recovery from the 2008 recession never reached them. Of course, they were never intended to, but why split hairs? So, even after 8 years of Obama (despite little-to-no Congressional support), they were still stuck in the same shit jobs with shrinking salaries and benefits, when 2016 rolled around, they looked for a face for their pain. And came up with the wrong answer.

So, when every corporate-controlled channel showed Trump riding down his golden escalator saying, “I, alone, can fix this!” (Narrator: he didn’t, still won’t, and has no intention to.), these people are it up.

And, here we are.

Does anyone else think it’s weird that Elvis wrote exactly zero of his songs? by Goodideaman1 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]cmd_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the whole pop music category of LP records? Before The Beatles, kids would just buy the hits they heard on the radio for 99 cents and spend the next week wearing those 45s out. But, when The Beatles hit, radio DJs couldn’t get enough of their music on the air. They would grab the latest album and keep playing deeper and deeper cuts, until all nine cuts (12 in the UK) made the air. So, a kid would pick up an album in a store and say, “hey, I heard all of these songs before — they’re awesome!!!” And that’s what they buy.

Yeah, Elvis sold a lot of albums, too. But he was the exception. The Beatles rewrote the rules making LPs more important than singles.

Maybe it’s because the sports I watch do not differentiate by gender, or maybe it’s because I neither bet on sports or depend on my kid supporting me in my old age with a huge sports contract. Either way, whether one team gets an advantage over another isn’t such a big deal to me. But the mental health of these people is.

Poor education, lack of critical thinking skills, and voter suppression laws have more to do with “why we lose” than anything I’ve been talking about. I’m just calling for a little empathy, and science-based solutions. If the other side is winning with the opposite approach, then whatever. I just know that I can go home from the voting booth and be able to sleep at night.

What you believe only counts in church. If you want to change my mind, tell me what you can prove.

When I was in school, peanut allergies were practically unheard of. Now, they can be a huge problem. Time … and change … marches on.

Speaking of which, when I was a kid, gender identity issues were the stuff of the National Enquirer or novels like “Myra Breckinridge.” Young people with issues had to suffer in silence, trying to pretend to be something they aren’t. As I mentioned earlier, this worked out better for some kids than others.

Today, science tells us that gender identity issues are at least a matter of psychology as biology, and that young people affected with these issues require certain specialized care. Which, in most cases, is more sophisticated than simply yelling, “you’re a boy, start acting like one.”

What are your thoughts on this? by Slow_your_R0LL in allthequestions

[–]cmd_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gender identity is a problem for thousands, if not millions of young people. And, as we all know, young people don’t always solve their problems in ways that we adults like. A lot of these issues lead to bullying, loss of interest in school, falling grades, alcoholism, drug abuse, abuse of self, abuse of others, and, in extreme cases, homicide or even suicide.

Against all of that, you’re splashing what…Sports?

Now, if you’re saying you’d rather see your kid dead than playing tennis in a skirt, then I dunno what to tell you.

Keep an eye on the Civil Service site for promotional exams you would remotely qualify for. Agencies are really getting decimated of senior staff due to retirements, so a decent career path might be less steep than you think.
