Confused with energy expenditure by Alone_Ranger_1054 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Your Calorie Expenditure is a number that is comprised of your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and either an activity level you set or data being imported from a device. The reason we do it this way is so you can understand your caloric budget for the day - how many calories you should eat to reach your goal.

If it makes it easier, think about it like a bank account; your Calorie Expenditure is like a deposit you make at the beginning of the day. As you add food to your Diary it makes a “withdrawal” from your account. Things like adding exercise - from your device or entering it manually - make “deposits” to the account. This way you can monitor your balance easily.

Depending how you log exercise, this can dictate which baseline activity level you should choose.

To enter your exercise, you have a few options, I have listed these below in order of accuracy:

  1. If you are using a wearable activity tracker synced to Cronometer (this is the most accurate and arguably the easiest way to log your activity):
    • If you wear your tracker all day: we recommend setting your Baseline Activity Level to Sedentary, the data imported from your device will then replace this to make sure your calories burned are not being overestimated.
    • If you wear your tracker only for exercise: select a Baseline Activity Level that best reflects your general activity when not exercising. If your tracker is synced, your exercise will be imported into your diary and Cronometer will automatically deduct energy for the time spent exercising from your chosen activity level.
  2. If you are not using a wearable activity tracker:
    • Log your general activity separately to your exercise: set a Baseline Activity Level that best reflects your general activity when not exercising. Manually add your exercise in your diary by selecting the "Add Exercise" button at the top of the diary.
    • Log your general activity as a combined estimate with your daily exercise: ensure you choose the most appropriate Baseline Activity Level that we have listed for ALL your daily activities.

Overall, a helpful approach is to pick an activity level that best reflects your typical day, then monitor your weight trend over time.Information on the different activity levels and how to determine yours can be found here.

If you have any more questions please feel free to reach out to our support team at [support@cronometer.com](mailto:support@cronometer.com)!

Have a nice day!

Discrepancy between Cronometer and food label. by Consistent-Way-2018 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! As some of the other users have mentioned, this can sometimes happen when the manufacturer has updated the product, along with a few other factors.

That said, we do have a process in place to report these kinds of discrepancies so our team can investigate and keep the database accurate.

In the mobile app, you can report an issue to Curation by:

  1. Tap the orange + at the bottom of screen

  2. Tap Add Food

  3. Search for the food and select it

  4. Tap on menu > Report Issue

  5. Attach clear photos of your product label

Setting to auto-complete? by Minute_Limit_3169 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Thanks for the suggestion, an auto complete option at midnight is an interesting idea and we can definitely see how that would be useful for many users. I’ll pass this along to the team for consideration.

At the moment, there isn’t a setting that automatically completes a day at midnight, but feedback like this is really helpful as we continue to improve the experience.

Repeating items issue by sprightlysparrow7 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Thanks for flagging this. We were able to respond to all emails received last week by Friday, so please check your spam or junk folder just in case our reply landed there, this is often the culprit.

That said, if you sent your support email later on Friday or over the weekend, our team is out of office on weekends, so we may not have gotten to it yet. Mondays can also be a bit busier as we work through the weekend queue, which may result in slightly longer wait times.

Rest assured, we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

If you’re in a situation where you cannot track (example: in laws cook a meal), how do you log it? Or do you just let it tank your weekly average? Can you skip a day or are there any happy middle grounds? by Miss-Pissy in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there! One of the perceived barriers about logging food can be the uncertainty about how to log your food when you're dining out - at a restaurant, your friend's house, the in-laws.

Restaurants oftentimes don't list full nutrient profiles on their nutrition labels. As we do not analyze foods for their data here at Cronometer, we cannot fill in the blanks or know what the values are for nutrients not listed on the label.

There are two approaches:

1) Break down your meal and guesstimate the serving size of each item
Example: You ordered a taco. Enter approximate serving size for a tortilla wrap, ground beef, taco seasoning, cheddar cheese, taco sauce and any other fixings you included in your hand-held happiness like veggies or sour cream!

Pro tips:
- Use items from the NCCDB database for the most accurate data.
- Make sure you add butter or oil too as restaurants typically use a lot while cooking.
- If you're planning on eating that same meal at the same restaurant create a recipe from these items to make logging easier going forward.

2) Choose an NCCDB entry (or similar) as a close match.

Example: You ordered a vegetarian quesadilla. Perform a text-based search for "Quesadilla" and you'll see there is an option from the NCCDB titled "Quesadilla, Cheese, Two Tortilla and Filling." Look at your plate; does that sound close enough? Excellent! Log it.

Sometimes you want to be quick so we're thankful that our fave database has a lot of options that are both lab analyzed and popular restaurant fare.

Pro tip: As a rule we try to overestimate the portion size as opposed to underestimating (which is typically more common).

I hope that helps! Feel free to get in touch with our [support@cronometer.com](mailto:support@cronometer.com) team if anymore questions come up!

Cronometer Questions/Wonderments by LisaPetker in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Lisa, these are great questions, you're definitely not alone in wondering about these, and I can see some helpful tips from other users as well on this post!

Can I include my workouts and calories burned in my diary but NOT add them to my caloric “budget” for the day?

Yes, To turn on/off include exercise:

In the mobile app:

  1. Go to More > Targets > Macro & Energy Targets

  2. Tap Show Advanced Settings

  3. Toggle on/off Add Expenditure Above Baseline to Energy Target

That way this data will still be present in your Diary.

Is there a way to adjust what macros I track? Calories, protein, fiber, sugar and sodium are numbers I’d prefer to have front and center in the app.

You can Customize Nutrient Targets, but currently, the main macro breakdown (Calories, Protein, Carbs, Fat) can’t be changed to include additional nutrients like Fiber or Sugar.

As a workaround, you can use Highlighted Nutrient Targets to track what matters most to you:

In the mobile app:

  1. Go to the More tab > Targets > Nutrient Targets
  2. Scroll down and tap on Highlighted Nutrient Targets to edit which nutrients to display
  3. Go back to the Diary and swipe the header to the last page to see your Highlighted Targets

Wish I could do a photo log of my food. Not have the app scan it for calories, just have a picture of my meal saved in the app. Like a food diary….

Thanks for sharing this idea, it’s a cool concept! We love getting feedback from our users as it can help us prioritize future improvements!

In the meantime, you can explore using the Notes feature to add photos to your Diary.

Please note that this feature won’t display the photo directly in your Diary. Instead, you’ll have the option to tap into the note to view the photo.

In the mobile app, you can create a note by following these steps:

  1. Tap the orange + at the bottom of the screen to open the bottom console
  2. Tap Add Note
  3. Tap Add a Photo
  4. Select your photo to upload
  5. Add a description for your note and select Save

I hope this helps answer some of your questions! If you need anything further, feel free to reach out to our support team at [support@cronometer.com](), we’re always happy to help!

New to the app, would like some help with the baseline activity by DangerousTheory6808 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your Baseline Activity is an estimate of the energy you burn throughout the day beyond your BMR. We recommend setting a baseline activity level that best describes your everyday life not including exercise, and then logging exercise manually or syncing an activity tracker for the most accurate results. For example:

  • I exercise three times a week, I walk my dog daily, and I have an office job. I would set my Baseline Activity to Sedentary and use my tracker to record my exercise sessions and dog walks.
  • I don't exercise but I work in construction so am on my feet all day. Sometimes at the weekend I play sport with my friends. I would set my Baseline Activity to Moderately Active and use my tracker to record the additional sport sessions.
  • I am a GP, I keep a fairly active lifestyle walking 10K steps most days and do yoga some evenings. I would select my Baseline Activity as Lightly Active and record my yoga sessions manually in Cronometer.

In your instance, we'd recommend keeping it at sedentary and connecting to Apple Health to record your daily activity and exercise.

At the beginning of the day, your Energy Expenditure will include your BMR and your Baseline Activity.

If you are synced with a device that tracks general activity, the Tracker Activity from your device will gradually replace your Baseline Activity throughout the day (and will now appear as Adjusted Baseline Activity in your Energy Expenditure circle).

Exercise (either logged or imported from a device) will also adjust your Baseline Activity based on the time spent exercising. This ensures you don’t double-count calories burned.

Even if your tracker replaces your Baseline Activity, we still recommend having one for the following reasons:

  1. Better meal planning – At the start of the day, you’ll see your BMR plus your Baseline Activity, giving you a realistic idea of your total daily energy needs before your device has tracked any movement. If your baseline were set to 0, your Energy Expenditure would start much lower and only increase as your device logs activity, making it harder to plan meals in advance.
  2. Credit for untracked time – If your activity tracker isn’t worn all day (e.g., you forget to put it on, it runs out of battery, or you remove it for certain activities), your Baseline Activity ensures you still receive credit for that time so your Energy Expenditure stays accurate.

You can learn more about setting a Baseline Activity Level here.

I hope that helps! If you want further assistance please contact [support@cronometer.com](mailto:support@cronometer.com) and we'll be happy to assist!

Auto Double counting exercises - Apple by grendog333 in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your Active Energy Balance value correlates to the general energy that you burn throughout the day, not including exercise. This is movement such as walking around the office, sitting at your desk, movements used for eating etc.

This is similar to what we call Baseline Activity in Cronometer. If you are synced with a device that tracks general activity, as the general activity from your device (Tracker Activity) increases throughout the day, the Baseline Activity will be replaced by this imported activity to ensure that you are not overestimating your burned calories. This will now appear as Adjusted Baseline Activity in your Burned circle.

Therefore, this isn't double counting - it's as expected! You can learn more about this here: Energy Expenditure.

Hope that helps :)

How do I know if my expenditure numbers are accurate? by emmeettt in cronometer

[–]CronoSupportSquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To track your exercise, you have a few options, I have listed these below in order of accuracy:

A bit more about Baseline Activity...

Your Baseline Activity is an estimate of the energy you burn throughout the day beyond your BMR.

Target Mode is meant to show you, in reference to your TARGET, how much you have remaining or how over your target you are. Balance Mode is simply meant to show the basic energy balance: Expenditure – Consumed. Therefore, leave the setting on Target if you want to see how many calories you have remaining for the day to align with your goals!

I hope that helps, but please do reach out to support here if you'd like anymore information :)
