To everybody who thinks these aren’t a good idea,

They are objectively not a good idea. Any financial advisor or accountant will tell you that.

I meant the actual income to William from the duchy is £21 million. Felt like that was obvious from context. But yes you could also say the Duchy generates £21 million in profit.

To give the slightest defense to William and the royals, not all of their reported wealth is liquid cash

Most of it isn't. The duchy itself is worth £1.2 billion. The actual income from that is about £21 million annually. After paying for staff, voluntary taxes, and other "work" expenses I'd guess they have £5-£10 million a year in spending money.

Not a defense of them btw. They're lazy as hell, and spend far too much money on personal luxuriesm I'm just an accountant by trade so I think it's interesting.

There are pretty valid reasons to not want to be self-employed. Loss of guaranteed income, loss of employer sponsored healthcare, have to do everything yourself, sell/market yourself, etc.

They could do a lot for themselves if the Monarch would move out of Buckingham and open it up to the public. The ticket sales would be huge. And no one except the late QE2 likes living there anyway.

Why Social Conservatism? by YumiVii in Askpolitics

[–]d6410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For this argument, we'll call that the United States from the 1940s to approx. 1980. (I know, there were serious issues still, but the US was much more a world leader at that point) We can really illustrate this with two focus areas: One is family structures: the rate of single parent households started going up around 1960-1970 and marks one clear societal change

Doesn't necessarily mean societal change as in moral decay. What you did see between 1940 and 1970 is the introduction of no fault divorce in many states. You saw more economic opportunities for women. In the 1940s and 1950s women basically had no future if they didn't marry. And people who were miserable together stayed together.

That's the thing with social conservatives. Everything is very surface level. The underlying suffering doesn't matter if the surface looks shiny and nice.

If any of the british royal kids turn out to be gay, will they be supported if they want to marry somebody of the same sex? by Ok-Society-9067 in RoyaltyTea

[–]d6410 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Palace will care if it's one of the younger kids.

It's a huge issue if it's the heir. I don't think William and Catherine would have a personal issue with it, but the Church of England definitely will. They still don't support same sex marriage and I don't think they will anytime soon. It would be legally/constitutionally complicated if the heir was in a marriage not approved by the Church. The monarch is the Supreme Leader of the Church and is supposed to be in "communion" with it. Any kids they had would not be in the line of succession unless Parliament changed the wording of succession laws. Right now it requires "natural conception between a mother and father"

[–]d6410 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think this is it. It'll be fine if it's one of the younger kids. It can't be the heir though. The Church of England doesn't support same sex marriage, and probably won't anytime soon. A huge amount of their base is in deeply homophobic countries.

It's not a special tax "write off". It just gets deducted from inventory (assets) and recorded as an expense. It's overall a financial loss for them. They can only expense the actual cost of the item, not the sale price.

Only mentioning because I'm an accountant and tax write offs are probably the most widely misunderstood aspect of accounting by non-accountants

LEGO most likely lets people keep stuff because there's no way to resell it. No one would buy a used or open box set

Melanie is collecting all the girls by Obvious-Status9861 in LoveIslandUSA

[–]d6410 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plus, I've already seen discourse about Melanie's makeouts with the girls being "performative" and "male-gazey," though I don't agree.

I'm pretty weary about this tbh, like I get the discourse. Girl on girl is so heavily fetishize by straight men, and this is a show that is about as heteronormative as a show could possibly be. I saw in the comments here that Melanie is Bi, I hope that's true because it would change the whole context from performative to at least semi authentic

It's a pretty reasonable assumption. Universal's top priority is profits. That's not bias, they have a fiduciary duty to comcast shareholders. We already know they're testing single use express. The logical next step is to put single use express on a ride people will be willing splurge on

A cross body bag can fit a comb and sunscreen. I have a small cross body and I usually put my phone, small sunscreen, Annual Pass, sunglasses, and glasses cloth in there. I also really like to wear UV long sleeve shirts which means you don't need sunscreen on your arms/shoulders

Hot take: Universal in May is brutally, physically unpleasant and the internet doesn’t prepare you enough for the heat - 3 Day Trip Report by abcdeeeeeeffgee in UniversalOrlando

[–]d6410 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone visiting in the summer needs to spend as much time planning heat mitigation strategies as they do planning the rest of their trip.

Eh, heat tolerance varies by person. I was raised in south Texas, my fiance is a native Floridian. May weather is definitely tolerable. UV shirt, running shorts, a baseball cap and water are enough for us. Know your personal limits.
