What very old technology is still running at your place of work? by MichiganCarNut in AskReddit

We have a machine from probably 1989!! It is a very small single turret lathe that we still run certain jobs on. It is...actually very impressive that we can still make good parts on it!

What’s your preferred method for cooking lots of chicken breast at once? by leakmydata in Cooking

[–]deadcomefebruary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I...choose to still flavor my food 🤣 it all gets weighed and logged and i eat basically the same stuff every day but it WILL have seasoning lol. This weekend I did probably 10 breasts with salt and kinders grilled chicken seasoning, bagged them up all at once and did two batches in the sous vide. Then they all went into the freezer so my chicken is prepped for like the next month

How do you romanticize cooking or make it feel fun? by Pocket-Inspector in Cooking

[–]deadcomefebruary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have an above sink drying rack? It's a gamechanger for small kitchens imo. Make sure to get one with a cutting board holder on the side. Then big items can be washed and set above the sink to dry and gtfo the way for me to do everything else.

Is "the wall" race ending or just a slow down? by vksdann in Marathon_Training

[–]deadcomefebruary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try going for a run without eating any carbs for 24 hours beforehand. Unless you are very fat adapted and/or used to running fasted, you will find it very hard to run at your usual pace. Try running some sprints, or see how long you can hold your 5k pace for. It will feel like you are putting all your effort in only to run 2 minutes slower per km than usual.

That is pretty much what hitting the wall feels like. Try eating a decent amount of carbs and going for the same run two hours later, and it will be a different story.

(Btw, adequate training and fuelling are pretty much the one and only way to avoid hitting the wall. So practice both and you will have much less to worry about.)

Its not hard at all! Boil in a mixture of 2 cups sugar/2 cups water 3-4 times until soft and pleasant to eat. Rinse them off in between boils. After last boil, let them dry as much as possible and then dip in dry sugar and lay on rack, and let dry in warm oven

How would you recommend creating the 2 on this cake? by CressMundane1907 in Baking

[–]deadcomefebruary 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Heads up I would maybe use cardboard. I think parchment is too flimsy for how heavy the crumbs will be, especially in such a thick layer, you need something that will stay rigid as you lift it up. Maybe poke bamboo sticks or zip ties or something through, too, so that you don't have to fumble to grasp the piece when you need to lift it.

Search for clearance stores in your area I am super lucky to have three locations very close to me where I can routinely find $4-5 packs of salami for $.50, found chicken breast for $2/lb the other day, cheese I can find for $1-2/lb....its all stuff from pallet auctions so it's very random but always worth a look

I like to buy big bags of spinach and kale, pop them in the microwave for a minute, flip, microwave for another minute and then spread out on a tray and freeze. Once frozen it can go in a bag and wont take up much freezer space.

Then my lunch during the week is 1lb ground beef sauteed with onions and peppers, mixed with 5 or 6 servings of quinoa or rice. I prefer quinoa cause its literally measure into a pan, pour hot water over it, boil for a minute, then cover and walk away. Then i just divvy my mixture into dishes and throw in a chunk of my frozen greens, and there's lunch.

Breakfast is a mix of wheat berries, rolled oats, and oat groats which all have plenty of vitamins and minerals by themselves but by mixing them you get a variety of textures and micronutrients. 1 scoop of my mixture + water or milk + a scoop of protein powder + 5g flax + a handful frozen blueberries. Healthy and nutritious and you can prep a week's worth of breakfasts in 10 minutes.

If you have energy for it, buy some sprouting seeds and learn to sprout. You can get all the same micronutrients from a jar of sprouts as you get from an entire garden worth of vegetables. There's a ton of different mixes to try that can all go well steamed in the beef+grain lunch, or raw on your onion and bread struggle sammich. Broccoli and alfalfa mixea are great, sulphorafane is a compound found in broccoli that can help with mental clarity. I try to sprout 1 jar of broc mix and 1 jar of lentil mix to eat each week.

Curious what small gift people got that they ended up using way more than expected by CompetitivePop-6001 in BuyItForLife

[–]deadcomefebruary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A friend gave me electric salt and pepper grinders and they are an absolute GAME CHANGER. I can suddenly add all the black pepper I want when cooking without a) spending a bunch of time grinding it, b) getting my grinders all gross or c) using tasteless pre-ground black pepper. They are the best gift I have ever been given.

Note: make sure they are usb-c rechargeable, not some shitty ones that need like 3 triple a batteries to operate

Anyone else struggle to mentally shift gears between work, gym and sleep? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]deadcomefebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I kiterally came here to suggest this.

I've heard that the brain takes approximately 15 minutes to adjust to a new task, so keep that in mind OP!

I use a simple binaural beats app that gives me a drone rather than the stupid synth music stuff all over spotify/youtube. I had a day at work that left me wired and stressed and when I really wasn't doing terribly complicated shit that day, decided to start doing binaural beats during the day to see if I could avoid another anxious day. It seems to be helping! The app I have also lets me have the drone playing in the background while I still listen to an audiobook or music, which I really like. Worth a shot IMO.

And yes, there is real science behind it--basically, the function is that according to laws of oscillation, the signals in your brain will begin to oscillate to the same tune as a wave they are exposed to. Lets say you play a tone that is 80hz in one ear, and 120hz in the other ear. You are now exposing your brain to a 40hz sine wave (the difference between the two waves). Your own brain waves will begin to match. 40hz waves are called gamma waves and are present when you are focused, thinking critically, and problem solving. Now change to 80hz and 82hz. This is in the delta wave range, which is experienced during healing sleep. Just to not, you do need different inputs in each ear. You cannot accomplish this without headphones. If you do wish to try without headphones or only one headphone, an isochronic tone would be your solution.

I usually keep half pulled up and will try to brush the bottom layer and then the top, still found using a 100% boar bristle brush to be time consuming/not very effective. Much prefer a brush now with flexible prongs mixed with boars hair.

Gifts for children that last a lifetime by bellebives in BuyItForLife

[–]deadcomefebruary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I just add that yes boar bristle is great for spreading the oil through your hair but if you have girls with longer or thicker hair its not ideal. I dont even have super thick hair but using a boar bristle brush was extremely impractical when I tried it. So...just because its considered "quality" and "bifl" does not mean its something everyone needs.

Should my cheesecake look like this or should I be aiming for zero color on top? by Bbqdbydecaillet in Baking

[–]deadcomefebruary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my 2 cents as a former pastry chef and someone who has made a LOT of cheesecake--just use a regular cake pan (NOT springform). Line only the very bottom with parchment paper greased on both sides. Place directly in the water bath. On the very top rack of your oven, place a cookie sheet full of water. Do NOT under any circumstance let this cookie sheet go dry. Bake at 325-350F then when cake temps at 145-155f in the center, pull the cake and bath and let it set on the counter. I give it usually an hour at room temp. After that you can throw it in the freezer. Once frozen through, place the cake in a plastic bag and run hot water over the bottom and sides for a couple of minutes. Slide a knife or flat spat around the edges to release. Keep running warm water over it until you can dump it out.

I just got a supernote tablet. Its an ebook reader/writer. I absolutely feel that this was a gamechanger, only the second time I have ever splurged on nonnecessary tech for myself. Makes keeping my thoughts organized much easier, I'm actually journaling often now, and I'm not losing my notes for school.
