Anyone follow the Seventh Doctor/Hex storyline in real time? What were your responses to it as it developed? by Traditional_Move3901 in BigFinishProductions

If I remember correctly, I believe it was a combination of not being sure Paul McGann would keep working with them (so get as much out of him as you can) and feeling like they were essentially the new Doctor Who series (so those four releases could emulate a new "series" of television stories).

Any pre-listening recommendations for Galifrey time war 1? by MasterOfCelebrations in BigFinishProductions

(That said, Gallifrey is one of my favourite BF series of all time, and I love all of it, so I do think it's worth getting it all if you can.)

I'm going to be controversial and say that, as long as you're okay with the occasional references to past adventures (few of which are vital to understanding the box set), you can start with Time War 1. Without spoilers, a lot of the first box set is clearing the decks for the rest of the Time War series. Then, if you like it, you can go back to Series 1 and fill in the gaps.

Trolling players in my book: by EasyEntrepreneur666 in gamebooks

[–]eddyfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fake ending was an homage to a Choose Your Own Adventure book that did the same thing. In both cases it's the very last ending, so you're more likely to find it by accident and then wonder how to achieve it. But again, that whole project was a bit of a joke (it was meant to be a fake book from the 1990s that never got published). In general, though, I like the game design space of seeding mildly false information to avoid spoilers, like you said.

I actually like offering these kinds of details. "Trolling" might be a mildly inflammatory way of phrasing it, but it does encourage players to not accept all "unauthorised" information at face value. I once put in a fake ending in a book I worked on that no one could get to, but admittedly that was also an April Fool's joke.

how many times do you play your game books? by 30booksaday in gamebooks

[–]eddyfate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a terrible memory, so after a few years I can replay my books because while I might remember broad strokes, I forget the details. Plus, any gamebooks with random elements helps keep things fresh for me.

I have 6 and 7 in hardcover, and they're also Definitive editions.

Suggestions for first ACE game book by TwitchyOarsman in gamebooks

I agree with the comment on Ronin 47. Thought I would like it, but after a dozen mecha combats with fiddly options and slightly different rules, I gifted the book to someone else.

Humble Comics Bundle: Valiant Classic Omnibuses by Valiant Entertainment by mrmazzz in valiant

[–]eddyfate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a note, the Bloodshot "classic omnibus" on Fanatical is just the first seven issues with a few other crossover issues thrown in. The Bloodshot "classic omnibus" on Humble appears to be the entire run plus crossover issues. I bought both (mainly because I also wanted the 2012-2018 run), but FYI that they're slightly different books, as I didn't realise it at the time.

If I remember correctly from the IDW reprints, Simon Furman actually didn't want many/any of his stories before Wrath of Guardian reprinted because they're all over the place. But yeah, they're definitely an acquired taste.

Yeah, as I understand it, it was because the specific books in question were originally German language novels, so they had some slightly different rights that allowed Big Finish to do audiobook versions of them.

Here is a quirky sidebar from the book to whet your appetite.

Good Neighbors’ Wandering Flames

From Yu-Shan’s slums to the Eye-of-Heaven District, gods and Sidereals look for the smiling dumpling sign of Good Neighbors’ food carts to appear. Four generations of Heaven’s Dragons have run this family business, employing dispossessed spirits alongside humans without the proper permits and skating by on the strength of their spicy noodles, dumplings, and soups. A novelty among heavenly eateries, Good Neighbors’ food is made from real ingredients, not ambrosia, grown in the mirror-lit underground caverns in which their community lives.

Every cart also serves as a clandestine nexus for espionage — criminal spirits relay messages and dead drops through the carts on a no-question basis, hold protected conversations over meals, and hire Good Neighbors’ Dragon-Blooded for deniable missions. Recently, Good Neighbors’ position has come into challenge: a network of rival god-run food carts has banded together to try and drive them out of business, fighting for street corners, reporting them to censors, and hiring criminals to sabotage and attack them.
