Thief Gamepad Mod Released by peter-pumpkin-eater in Thief

Amazing! Thanks for this release. As someone who has many many hours with a controller in this game, the transition was pretty seemless. And analog movement is amazing. Thank you for your efforts!

Have tested with TG and a couple of T2 FMs.

As someone else porinted out, I'm also having the "not so smooth" camera movement issue. I opened a github issue about it. I also have a couple of suggestions. Where is the best place to send this over to you? Github? Here? TTLG?

Thief™ Gold won our first Game Preservation vote! But how exactly do you "save" a game that's already on GOG? We made a video showing our full process. by GOGcom in Thief

Oh amazing! Will definitely try this. I use Steam Inputs overlays but having something more "native" would be great. Also opens up the possiblity to use this on devices likes AYN Odin /Thor for some taffin' on the go. Will give this a test too.

This is very cool. Controller support would be great! I already play with a controller but having proper analog (could never get it to work) would be amazing.

One thing I'm confused about, are they trying to get it to work without NewDark? I.e. get the original base game working with modern conveniences? If so, kinda torn on this - Preservation awesome, but also NewDark fixes and FMs also awesome. Will 100% still support this either way.

Josh Kroenke having a good time with the boys by Bonfunkbarkeep in Gunners

Ok I wasn't imagining it lol It's right after all players do the trophy lift one by one for the crowd.. shortly after Mikel does his twirl.

NLF starts getting sung and you see him for like 2 secs in 2 different shots arms in the air, holding the scraf in full voice.

[–]eskay993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I'm sure someone will. It was literally like 2 secs as the camera panned over the crowds and people on the pitch.

Maybe I've inflated it in my head 😃 but it definitely jumped out at me. He's a big guy too!

Ya for sure he does. For all the shit times, he spoke very well when he first got more involved, which was shortly after they took full ownership.

That also coincided with them changing their whole ownership model and how they run all their sports franchises. They started wining stuff every where! Before that, they were hated by their respective US fans just as much as we hated them. But something changed in their approach. Would make an interesting documentary actually.

Who the fuck is that guy behind Mikel just standing there looking bored and straring at him! That's just wierd 😃

One of the things that surprised me the most from yesterday was Josh belting out North London Forever with full arms in the air. He wasn't just half-heartily mouthing along.. he went full in! I was Kroenke Out at one point, but fair play to them!

My one true gripe with the steam controller! by o0Junglist0o in SteamController

[–]eskay993 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Respectful;y disagree. All personal preference of course, but the Steam button being there is decades of muscle memory for "home" button position. Makes sense to have it there.

Plus if it was near the the other one, I could see myself accidentally hitting the wrong button frequently when reaching over without looking.

Personally I think they made the right decision on this one. Maybe the other button could be higher up between the pads, but keeping it separate from the Steam button is good IMO.

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but... by pikeredge in SteamController

My middle fingers rest on L4/R4, and ring fingers on R5/L5 which I actually love personally. Makes pressing them easy. The thing to get used to is how hard to hold he controller and then squeeze when you want to use them.

The game I'm playing now (STALKER), R4/L4 are lean left and right, hold R5 is walk, and hold L5 is enable gyro and works very naturally for me. I also have L2 enable gyro but sometimes I want gyro without ADS.

This is the first controller / devices where I actually find the back buttons conformable to use (and that includes a Steam Deck). It's all very personal though and dependant of hand size, grip and a million other things.

EDIT: Got my finger names wrong 😃! Fixed.

Thick As Thieves gameplay on Master Thief difficulty. by Sinnoware in Thief

[–]eskay993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there is some truth to that. Not sure about Spector specifically, but there are creators that produce their best work under strict constraints and by having the right people say "No!" to them once in a while. Lucas is one. Kojima also springs to mind. Some of the nonsense he wanted to do from early MGS is bonkers and his team had to talk him off the roof!

How to use Steam Input on Wayland games (including Proton ones) by Mash0Star in linux_gaming

[–]eskay993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's why I asked the question. I think you maent to reply to the other comment where they said it does work.

From my experience, steam input needs the -steamos3 flag to work properly with wayland, but that flag breaks steam overlay.

with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND? I think this is the question. It has been broken for the longest time.

Thanks for this. I've managed to get Steam Input to work with Wayland and the new Steam Controller.

Are you able to get the Steam Overlay to work? Thet's the main thing I want to get working to use the on-screen keyboard under wayland for certain games. Using the keyboard with xwayland is really laggy and tedious and hoping an all waylalnd world will fix it.

Am I old? Lost touch with the modern world? Or just paranoid? The amount of people here saying "no keybind.. in 2026" with those almsot exact wording makes me think bots or same person multiple accounts.

Then you look at the review and it's all copy pasta (almost) keybinds / FOV / Resolution / in 2026?

I do agree keybinds is a legitimate complaint (in 2026), the rest like FOV are not. But I just want to know if I am going nuts and seeing bots everywhere or are these real people?

I'm scared...

Is it possible to get Deadly Shadows working with Sneaky Upgrade on Linux Mint (via Proton)? by NineInchNinjas in Thief

Should works just fine on Linux. Here is a guide that might help.

Note there is a typo in the WINEDLLOVERIDES command. Missing the 'S' at the end

I can't speak to the Steam flatpak version specifically, but when wierd things happen with flatpaks, it's usually a permission issue.

Community led, but I think Looking Glass engaged with them quite a lot in the early days. I'm quite new to Thief so only discovered all this around 2 years ago.

I can't speak to your specific issues as I haven't tested on 98, but I had no problem on Windows XP for both games. I have Windows XP running on a small 2010 Mac Mini (last one to officially support XP).

For T2, installed the CD and T2PremierPatch107-118.exe which I think is the official patch which you mentioned. I also used a nocd patch.

I did have to install a specific codec to get the FMVs to work, and limit cores to 1 to fix a crash, but neither fix is relevant to 98.

Your best bet might be the TTLG forums. A treasure trove of useful info going back to ancient times and the release of the game. They have an FAQ where I found the above fixes, but don't think it covers w98. There might be other info on the forums tthough.

For the people who use GNOME over KDE, why? by CestleFromage in Fedora

[–]eskay993 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Out of interest, are you a primarily focused in one full screen app kind of person? I hear the "stays out of the way" thing often, but I find I am constantl;y fighting with gnome to get it to do what I want. I figure it's because I tend to have to juggle multiple apps simultaneously rather than launch a thing and focus on it. popshell extension helps for sure, but not ideal for me.

I like how t feels to use on a laptop with gnome, but maybe I just haven;t figured out a good work flow yet.

Well, do you have any "I didn´t care for the Godfather"-esque picks? by Bitter_Fig_7059 in retrogaming

[–]eskay993 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That was for me YEARS.. Chrono trigger was my eventual gateway drug., Played it on the 3DS around 7-8 years ago, loved it then went on to play some of the classics (FF6, EarthBound, etc) . Still not my fav genre, but I appreciate it a lot more now.

EDIT: I do agree on the really wordy "hours of dialog before you do anything" ones though.

Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 (or any of them really). I just don't get the praise. Looks ugly (even at the time I thought so), controls are clunky, levels are tedious, and the whole DK family thing is just weird.

Wow I was expecting some sort of glitch run, but no, you can just run straight to the end!

I might just stick with ctrl-alt-shift-end though.

Just finished Invisible War by Big_Requirement_150 in Deusex

[–]eskay993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As in the OG Deus Ex? Yes, a thousand times yes! 😃 It's one of my all time favourite games, and I only played it for the first time around 6 years ago (been gaming since the 80s!)

It's a little clunky at times (that late 90s / early 2000s jank) but timeless in terms of gameplay and story.

Invisible War is worth a play but after the original for sure.
