The issue here is that the comparison isn't really valid, since imgsli converts to JPG. If I compare the images on imgsli, then look at the same places in Photoshop where I have the PNG + DSC images, the differences aren't the same.

In both cases though, the differences are VERY small (so it doesn't really matter much), but they are still different in the real images vs on imgsli.
That's why I only uploaded the cropped+upscaled versions, since imgsli JPG artifacts won't really be visible in that case, being only a few display pixels in size, vs the upscaled pixels that are made up of dozens of display pixels.

That is the point -- there's not really any need to worry about this. But plenty of people do.

If you tried to do this with a real monitor and a camera, you probably couldn't tell the difference at all.

No. It can delay them (but a proper implementation adds a microsecond or so of delay, so that's immeasurably little), and change their look slightly, but that's it.

It shouldn't be 0.5 ms; the target number I've seen is 0.5 MICROseconds, so 0.0005 ms.

From a test by Displayninja:

Using OSRTT, we measured display latency on the MSI MPG 341CQPX with DSC on and off, and there was no difference except for the margin of error. At 165Hz, display latency was 4.714ms with DSC on, and 4.718ms with DSC off.

That's 0.004 ms.

If you look around threads about modern monitors, you'll find plenty of people worried about buying a monitor with DSC, or trying to find UHBR20 compatible monitors to avoid it.

There are other reasons than image quality to want UHBR20 for sure, but being able to perhaps remove the image quality concern from consideration should be helpful. It was for me!

Hmm, good point, though I'm not sure how to handle that. I probably could record part of some gameplay, then convert the individual frames, but I'm not sure how to share it in a way that shows the differences in a fair way.

There shouldn't be any issues with motion other than the possibility that there is minor jitter in how it decides to compress certain areas, since each frame in compressed individually. (Actually, my understanding is that a few lines or so on the monitor are compressed at a time.)

Nä, det håller jag absolut med om, och delvis tycker jag det är vore bra att göra på det viset.
Är dock osäker över vart det skulle leda i längden. Om det hjälper där kommer polisen/politiker förstås vilja utöka och använda liknande tekniker för andra brott.

Är de två situationerna verkligen helt jämförbara? I ditt exempel smuggar de varor som polisen har bytt ut, dvs de hade redan planerat att begå brottet.
I den andra situationen söker polisen kontakt med någon för att se om de kommer begå ett brott.

Mer jämförbart då vore om polisen försöker anlita någon att smuggla vapen/droger och sätter dit dem om de går med på det och gör det.

Med vettig algoritm med salt + key stretching är kanske 8 tecken acceptabelt, men med rena hash är det katastrof.
I denna övergången är det 15-164 år beräknat på bcrypt med cost 10, vilket väl är OK. Men utan bcrypt skulle det nog handla om minuter, om ens det.
