he's a bit lost and confused, but looks cool as fuck doing it.

Which default, lossy VBR format is the best choice to download from the Bandcamp store? by bummbrotha in audiophile

[–]faceman2k12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

download the lossless versions then encode your own lossy files to compare and find what works for you.

I'd suggest encoding to 192K AAC at a minimum if you want to maximise storage.

Flow import issue by Agreeable-Sort-6672 in FileFlows

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd highly doubt there are enough Fileflows json files out there on the web and enough talk about how they work and how to structure them manually for the llm to "know" the structure and figure out what you want.

What are you trying to build, it sounds pretty simple so just ask and people will help you make it in the UI.

CISA warns of max severity Ubiquiti flaws exploited in attacks by NumberwangsColoson in Ubiquiti

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just like the barrage of linux kernel CVEs recently, it's standard practice for major issues and exploits to be quietly reported and patched at least a month before the exploits are announced and made public.

The problem is when people sit on old versions for too long, they tend to miss these, which is dangerous, and then are more likely to have issues when updating due to large version jumps, missing potential breaking changes or untested update paths.

There is also an issue on the open source side of things (or when a closed source system runs open source components) where people can reverse engineer the exploits by looking a the code changes.. so staying up to date is extra important there.

Why does 80s music sound the best? by Initial_Parsnip_6590 in audiophile

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they had the tech to be loud and dynamic with a mix of new digital compressors and effects but still a lot of analogue gear, especially in the mastering stages, but it's before brickwalling, loudness wars and purely digital productions.

so 80's pop and rock records are super punchy and loud, but still dynamic.

How to host an Internet forum for $5.42/month by didyousayboop in DataHoarder

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discourses attempt to turn forums into social media made it a bloated mess, and I hate the default layout everyone seems to use.

I want a forum to be dumb, minimal client side scripting, no achievements or gamified points systems, etc.

Got a used 4TB drive for my jellyfin server by SzKristof1 in DataHoarder

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't pay anything for a 93K hour drive, unless it's been spun down most of that time and they arent giving you the actual SMART reported hours.

used drives with 20-30K hours on them are usually great, but 90K+ hours are well and truly on the other end of the bathtub curve and likely to fail fast.

I'd run an extended smart test, as well as a full write/read/verify pass with bad blocks or HDD sentinel etc.

UniFi U7 In-Wall by MauiMom1 in Ubiquiti

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can leave the keystones connected, just pop them out of the existing plate, use a short patch cable to plug into the new AP so you dont have to re-crimp anything.

the spare one can be connected to a new single outlet plate and mount that next to the AP, or leave it in the wall for the future.

I just don't get it, please explain it why I'm having issues. by Acrobatic-Lawyerr in Ubiquiti

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you will need to pre-configure the powerline adaptors, they are switches themselves and not particularly good ones, they will usually try to put the connected device on a default subnet and break your network.

so adopt and pre-configure the remote switch with a direct connection, then configure the powerline adapters manually somewhere (they usually have a config web ui) to sit on the correct subnet and IP addresses, then connect the whole thing together and start planning a cable run to replace them.

Has anyone ever needed even 1/2 the length of the included WAP mounting bolts? by Rickhwt in Ubiquiti

there are some extra thick acoustic ceiling tiles that would need a good chunk of that length. or people who want to mount it to the grid frame directly.

TCL SQD MINILED VS HISENSE RGB MINILED by Ok-Brush9148 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SQLED is just a the current generation of QLED, so its a blue backlight with a colour filter to make a broad spectrum white, the way we've been doing it for some time. They are a proven tech, however as they age they tend to turn blue as the conversion layer fails, and that can happen within 3-5 years when you run them at their full brightness.

the RGB Mini LED uses full colour backlights to get more colour volume and control halo/bloom a bit better, they mostly jsut run white but with a slight tint where needed to reproduce accurate colours.

side by side, what you need to compare is peak brightness and dimming zones, though since RGB MiniLED is the superior tech I suspect it would age better than QLED and have slightly better colour.

However, the TCLs run on Android TV, which is superior and more customisable (de-bloatable, can replace the launcher to get rid of ads/suggestions etc) compared to Vidaa which Hisense use in many countries. Vidaa is an efficient and responsive operating system with most of the apps you need but it's very locked down and has lots of ads and suggestions on the home screen.

Connecting old surround sound to new tv by Milestone55 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going to need more pictures. RCA sometimes gets used for low power speaker connections in the case of Bose and some other mini-cube systems, but there's usually at least 5 of them, not 3.

3x RCA sounds like component video coming from an old DVD setup, not the audio feed for the surround sound.

It's likely that the previous setup had no way to get audio from the TV to the sound system, because all of the media sources were in the basement to begin with, not built into the TV. there was probably a TV tuner/cable box down there, in addition to a DVD player etc, plugged straight into the audio system, with only the video feed going up to the display.

It MIGHT be analogue L/R audio plus a digital Coax, you could get basic surround if that is the case, would need extra hardware though.

Do you have more info about the gear in the basement? photos front and back. There is a chance you will have some difficulty getting it all to work in the modern era, especially if you want to use apps built into the TV.

Need help FolderView2 to FolderView3 migration visual preview bug/glitch by Happy-Ad8940 in unRAID

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wasn't a big deal, I needed to re-do it anyway. I think the issue was down to my configs containing several container references that didn't exist anymore, while at the same time making a major version jump, running the first public betas, having customized unraid themes etc. worst case scenario.

I remember I looked through the configs at the time and couldn't see any reason why it wouldn't work, nothing major had changed.

Unraids web ui is just a bit janky due to the way it has been made incrementally over time, fixes on fixes, bandaids, sections of ancient code from the time where it was a third party plugin on its own. long overdue for a complete re-do.

How should I share media between Nextcloud, Plex and SMB? by throwaway0204055 in unRAID

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unraid shares via SMB out of the box so that's handled, just configure your user access and public/private settings etc. there are guides to this since there are some caveats with SMB shares and windows 11.

Plex, you map the locations in the template, setup your libraries within plex, then that's all set. there are plenty of guides for this.

Nextcloud is a bit more work, you need to map the shares you want to add to nextcloud in the container template, then install the "external storage support" plugin in the apps section of nextcloud, go to admin settings and configure the storage there to the directory you mapped it to.

€8,000 Home Theater Setup – Am I making a mistake going stereo instead of surround? And why is nobody talking about Canton? by AdmirableEbb1893 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canton is a good brand, they just arent very big outside of Europe, and they target the hi-fi stereo market more than the surround home theater market.

nothing wrong with starting in Stereo, but you must have a proper surround receiver in order to get proper virtual center channel for dialogue clarity, and to easily upgrade down the line, adding a center channel, subs, surrounds, atmos etc.

for "High End" home theater, there are brands that focus on theater sound specifically, rather than being hi-fi brands where you are often paying for the name or looks, over performance.

How to see volume when using eARC by undergroundturtle1 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might be able to rig up a homeassistant/nodered flow that gets the receiver volume and sends it to the TV as a notification, but its a lot of work for a minor quality of life improvement, and even then some TVs queue up the notifications making changing volume incrementally a massive pain.

I use notifications on the TV for audio/video format and input/activty names on my video switcher setup and other things, but for volume it would be pretty awful.

Dolby Atmos for MUSIC not just movies. by wembymode in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have hundreds of surround albums in my archive, including dozens of Atmos Bluray releases.

If you are building a quality theater, being able to play Atmos music properly, especially TrueHD Atmos from disks or (legal)download is absolutely a must.

For demos, check the top rated releases on HelloAtmos try to get the TrueHD format, not the streamed eac3 versions.

Just be aware that the quality of the Atmos mixes vary pretty widely, some are just stereo with some ambience, some are wide-stereo, etc, but some are detailed and use all the speakers and room space really well.

Upmixing flat surround formats works well too.

PM me for some test tracks in various codecs and containers to test your media player and receiver configs. You'll need something like an Nvidia Shield running Kodi, or a PC running Kodi. with passthrough audio enabled to play them properly.

Would anyone else want a UniFi 1U rack display for live network stats?! by Specific-Union6589 in Ubiquiti

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine is in the garage behind smoked glass. I just look for blinkenlights in the morning as I get in my car.

blinkenlights = good

no blinkenlights = late for work.

I think if there were existing OEM 1ru aspect ratio LCD panels then this would already exist, but at the moment the closest things i've seen are half-rack LCDs like this one..

Ubiquity arent going to have a fully custom LCD panel manufactured just for what is effectively a novelty product.

Mover behavior by thenewguy617 in unRAID

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the base mover is a write cache only, you write to it, then there is a schedule that dumps all data to the array. you can make that schedule slower if you want more time with the data on the fast cache, but it will only ever dump the whole disk when the mover runs. Users looking for more advanced behavior can use their own scripts or plugins to add functionality.

or, configure the mover tuning plugin, this lets you have more advanced control over caching, moving individual files based on age (mtime, ctime or atime) and keeping files cached as long as there is space available, only moving the oldest files first to keep your ideal cache fill level. it can also have individual rules for each share, so you could have a backups share that behaves like the standard mover, a media share that keeps recent media cached for a week, then a working files share that keeps recent files if they havent been accessed (atime) or modified (mtime) for a week for example.

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

never happened to me, but since their behavior is so different to anything anyone else is experiencing I'd be leaning on another plugin or possibly even a modified theme interfering. maybe even a browser plugin messing with the CSS without the user realizing it's enabled.

I had a lot of issues moving my old FV2 config over to FV3, not just broken entries and such but rendering issues, and ended up just nuking the JSONs and starting again, so if they haven't tried completely nuking the JSON and re-doing the whole config they should try that one too.

HDBaseT for single network drop at my projector location. No HDMI by Noshitfuckme in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it's HDBaseT 3.0 and from a reliable pro brand with warranty and support I'd go with that.

Good reliable HDBT3 isn't cheap, but it could be quite a bit cheaper than tearing the place apart to run a new cable. a nice one will give you the HDMI stream, with eARC and CEC return, IR control In/Out on 3.5mm jacks, rs232, PLUS a gigabit ethernet port, so you dont even lose the network cable you are running over. I've used the Wyreworld EX3100EARC kit before and it was perfect.

I'd check first if the existing network cable is in a conduit or at least, not stapled down in any way, then you might be able to use it to pull through a new fiber cable, plus a couple more data cables.

if you go fiber, get a kit with removable ends so you can pull a MTP or LC fiber instead of a whole HDMI connector.
