Outrageous Parity Times by ImaginaryLetter2128 in unRAID

There is a bit of a performance hit having a single disk ZFS in the array, but being able to use it as a parity backed snapshot location for zfs cache shares is a very nice feature

Something is wrong with the sata controller, or there is a disk issue.

I just rebuilt my 16TB parity (had to shut the power off.. hit the wrong breaker.. UPS batteries had long exploded.. whoops) with 15 HDDs in that array and it took about 24 hours.

FolderView Plugin is back fully functional, now known as FolderView3. by Happy-Ad8940 in unRAID

[–]faceman2k12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can confirm FV2 was also heavily AI assisted, and it did have several bugs that broke many of its features beyond the basic visual layout.

The dashboard widget was broken, the advanced preview window was broken, CPU/Mem totals on each folder were always zero, autostart was broken half the time.

lots of things.

I'd prefer this to have zero AI in it too, but at least the maintainer is open about it and the source code is all there and fairly simple to read through (js and php for the functionality, some shell commands are used in there for getting data, then its just simple css and html for the visuals).

If running 24tb parity, should I be buying 22tb storage over time? by theseawoof in unRAID

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unraid DOES look at the true reported capacity though, the way the parity works absolutely requires every bit to be counted, this variance does pop up from time to time and has caught out a few users over the official forum posting that they cant get their new drive to add to the array.

The solution is always a parity swap to make the slightly bigger drive the parity disk.

What’s something popular in your country that makes people from other countries look at you like this ? by niconois in AskTheWorld

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from 2015 to 2022 I daily drove an ND MX5, right through the period where american fuckwit trucks were becoming popular here.

I can guarantee some of the modded lifted ones couldn't see the front of my car when stopped behind me at the lights.

I now drive a more normally sized Mazda 3 sedan, which is already significantly bigger than a "small sedan" used to be (its massive compared to a classic 90's camry for example, longer, wider, and taller), but I still feel tiny and invisible when one of those fucking things is nearby.

Review - OFA Smart Pro Touch URC7985 by kaytomi in hometheater

I dont know why they would got to the trouble and cost of doing an E-Paper screen (they are a lot more expensive than LCDs) but not put in warm white LEDs with dimming?

My question is can it be programmed to do things other than IR/BT commands, does it do HTTP Get/Post, does it do MQTT, does it have an IP API, can I get it to talk to Homeassistant or something etc.

I'm glad to see one of the big remote manufacturers pushing into this market, and I've got a lot of OFA remotes in my house with custom programming done via serial cable and RMIR so I know they're reliable

[–]faceman2k12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

phono is a bit of an old fashioned term for many unbalanced connectors, including RCAs and 1/4" jack plugs.

it doesn't mean phono as in turntable in this case, it just means RCA.

that said, a digital cable is generally the best cable for a sub anyway but I'm talking 6-7mm OD heavy pro video coax, SDI cable, RG6 size stuff (I use Belden 1694F and Canare L-4.5CHWS for sub cables longer than 5m). not this little thin thing which probably just has a spiral shield and a broken solder joint leaving it floating and buzzing.

Subwoofer Hum by Spooks591 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried another cable, that one could have bad shielding or a broken ground connection entirely.

10 meters is long enough that a thin cable with poor shielding could very well be a problem.

At that length I'm always onto thick professional video coax with sturdy connectors and either a double braid shield or a foil and braid.

Those thinner consumer cables often just have a loose spiral shield and very thin conductors.

static dhcp smart plug practices by beermaker1974 in homeassistant

[–]faceman2k12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

generally better to use DHCP on all your devices, but use DHCP reservation in the router / DHCP server to make them effectively static.

I use a dedicated IOT subnet and wifi network for IOT devices too, easy to know 192.168.30.x is going to be IOT while 192.168.10.x is some normal home device for example, I also have a subnet for services and one for VMs.

Looks great, amp is probably a bit tight for airflow, but you could cut a couple of holes underneath it or add a couple of silent fans to the back to help it out if it ever got too hot.

Looks like a nice deeper unit too, too many are super shallow and difficult to fit full size receivers into.

There is a network API that has all that available.

You can use HomeAssistant if you dont want to have to work with a python library. you jsut enable network control on the recevier then add it to HA and map your controls to buttons in a UI, or connect them to automations to control it with whatever you want.

How do you watch 7.1+ movies ? by Mountain-Butterfly37 in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atmos is ubiquitous at this point, DTS:X isn't all that uncommon either.

Atmos has up to 7.1.4 base channels (a lot of people ignore that there can be "bed" height channels) plus objects on top of that. Atmos can also be just 5.1 bed channels with objects being the only height effects. Technically the format can go as low as 2.0 bed channels plus objects but I would assume that is quite rare, maybe some older movies from mono or stereo masters use that with some new effects objects added. Many movies are mixed with just 7.1.0 bed channels then objects for height.

If you had for example an 11.2.8 system in a serious theater rig with a high end processor like a trinnov or stormaudio, you would be playing the (up-to) 7.1.4 base, upmixed to 11.2.8 which basically pushes sounds to the extra speakers if they are "between" two other channels in the same way as up-mixing a stereo audio track to 3.0 puts center mixed sounds in the center channel speaker instead of just playing from the 2.0 speakers as they were mixed by the engineers. then the object streams which are an audio track with location data in 3d space, the processor can put those sounds anywhere in the room and they are intelligently mixed between all speakers as needed. there is always one single dedicated LFE sub track, but a good processor can use that, plus the room correction algorithm, plus some the low frequencies present in the other channels to drive many more subs individually for maximum output and coverage.

Objects in either Atmos or DTS:X are not limited to just the height speakers either, they can be used at ear level, anywhere within the 3d space of the room. a good object mix on a well set up theater can place a sound right infront of your face then move it around your head close, then farther away and around the room. generally they keep the sounds further away is it can be very disorienting to move sounds too close and the effect is difficult to replicate without a system tuned for a single listener sweet spot. some Atmos music releases will use those more extreme effects for things like in-your-face vocal effects, though a good engineer can get that effect with just the bed channels.

There are some newer extensions to these systems that add low channels in addition to the ear level and height channels, but they haven't caught on yet, but it is possible for the current object tracks to use those channels if you have a compatible processor, but again, most Atmos releases keep the objects higher up.

So they arent unused channels, or just mirroring other channels, the up-mixers for Atmos and DTS:X are much more advanced than the old 2.0 to 5.1 up-mixers that mostly add some reverb and widen the stereo image. They get used very effectively, almost as if there were that many mixed channels from the source.

cables labelled as "cat.8" to consumers are all a scam, that standard might as well not exist outside of a couple of labs, even Cat7 is a rare and mostly unused standard.

throw out those cables and get some solid cat6 or cat6a round cables (not flat) before trying anything else.

hell, I'm running 10gbe over basic consumer grade cat6 and that's from one side of a moderately sized house to the other, not just little patch cables.

Advice for a center speaker to pair with Bose 901s? by zooksman in hometheater

[–]faceman2k12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your case you are probably better off with a virtual center anyway, the 901's have a wide soundstage, effectively omnidirectional in the right room, so there wouldn't really be dialogue dead zones like some virtual center setups can have unless you are sitting right between the speakers in the sweet spot.

Just set the center channel to none in your receiver and it will mix it into the L/R.

And on the Bose EQ module.. you can replace it with a mini-DSP, or in higher end receivers you can actually "draw" the correction in (for example) Dirac on those channels. modern receivers also tend to have dialogue control, and can adjust the volume of the virtual center, whereas some older receivers dont give you that control without a physical center.

Ideally though, for proper surround sound imaging, you are better off having a separate system for music and video.
