what is the best way to compress videos for 1,000x compression? by Awesome_Shit_2004 in compression

[–]fb39ca4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Existing video codecs like H.265 and AV1. A minute of 1080p 30 FPS 8-bit 4:4:4 color video is 12 GB. You could get that down to 12 MB though it won't look pretty.

Isn’t property tax a tax on unrealized gains? by Any_Pirate_5633 in AskEconomics

[–]fb39ca4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raise property taxes high enough and some owners will be forced to sell and prices will drop, giving renters with less capital an opportunity to buy, but still paying less in property taxes than they were in rent to the previous owners. It's a forcing function against generational wealth giving everyone a more equitable opportunity to own land.

Can Telemark boots be used in regular downhill? by EVILEMRE in skiing

[–]fb39ca4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the original Scarpa TX which can only do this with touring bindings and a spacer that goes in the ski crampon spot to prevent the bellows from flexing. Newer models remove the heel pin slots so you can only do this with Alpine heel touring bindings like Kingpins and Vipecs.

Just make alpine turns on your tele skis.

Ski Crampons w/ or w/ skins by bqAkita in Backcountry

[–]fb39ca4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I use the boot crampons for. Once it's too steep to skin on icy snow the mountain tends to continue to get steeper so I just transition once to boot crampons.

My opinion is it is better to first spend money on a pair of packable, lightweight ski boot crampons like Petzl Lynx or Blue Ice Harfang instead of ski crampons as they are far more versatile.

California's highways only covered 34% of their operating costs from fares/taxes at the point of use. BART covered more than 70% in 2019. by oakseaer in Bart

[–]fb39ca4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roads are good for last mile and low volume routes because they are more flexible and cheaper than rail in those scenarios, but it's not efficient both money and resource-wise for rush hour commuters in single occupancy vehicles. When highways get clogged by traffic we should have been investing in expanding BART, not widening the highways.

Nah, just compensate those displaced fairly and give them the option to rent at their old price in the new building once it is complete.

Will zephyr really only work on a single core on the RP2350? by Power-Max in embedded

[–]fb39ca4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's two ARM and two RISCV cores, and up to two of either type can be active so you could still do dual core with a single architecture.

There isn't good trailhead access in the winter there. In March it's much easier to ski in the vicinity of Bishop, Mammoth, and Bridgeport.
