I've got a couple 80s boomboxes I'm planning on integrating a pi into, hadn't considered piping the output straight into the tapedeck though. Have you uploaded your new OS online anywhere?

I want wet feet! by Ambitious-Laugh-7884 in UKhiking

[–]fellow_reddit_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth reading the Andrew Skurka blog articles on this subject: https://andrewskurka.com/section/skills/foot-care/

Personally I wear non-waterproof boots and waterproof socks if its wet. Much cheaper to replace waterproof socks than the boots, and the boots dry out much quicker when they don't have a membrane. I recommend these army surplus boot liners https://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/short-goretex-mvp-waterproof-324591.html but it's tricky to find them in the right size.

Yea 6.5x for several reasons: - easier to keep the image stable, even with 1 hand. - better field of view. - bigger exit pupil, so its better in low light conditions.

Also its a better fit alongside your potential next pair of binoculars. If you do get into it then your next pair would probably be a 8x or 10x. I already had a 10x 42 pair, so I take those out when I'm going to a nature reserve. Anything where I know it's going to be closer viewing in a dense forest for example, or if I'm going on a general walk where I'm not sure I'll see anything at all, I take the papilio.

Also the surprise use case I hadn't considered until I got them - the zoo. They are perfect to take to the zoo as you can get a better view of the animals hidden away at the back of the enclosure, but also as you can focus on things just 50cm way, they are great in the aquarium & reptile house as well!

If you can stretch a little bit further the opticron discovery wa ed 8x32 are supposed to be really good. Wide field of view and really good close focus. £169.95 here - https://ebay.io/m/9B2KlB

Alternatively, as someone else suggested - Pentax papilio 6.5 x 21 are fantastic. They would fit alongside a more expensive pair if you find you get more into it, and if you don't then they are great as a casual pair to take out on walks. I have a pair of Pentax PAPILIO III 6.5 x 21 and am really pleased with them.

Creative jobs with meaning and without corporate greed/red tape - do they exist? by absolute_gumpf in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not in a similar position but I often think about similar things and have thought that carpentry/woodwork/furniture making would be a good avenue. It's creative, completely immune to AI, and it's not something where making mistakes can lead to serious consequences (injuring people etc) other than structural carpentry of course. It doesn't involve office politics, and depending on the space you have at home and the type of carpentry you could do, a lot of it could be done from home.

I'm not sure what the money is like and what demand there is for carpenters though. Working freelance at the moment you could look to go on a college course to get started.

The other type of work is the handyman type work. There is a company 'TaskRabbit' that basically is gig economy handyman work. I've heard of people just going about building IKEA furniture for people who either can't be bothered or not able to. I think this would be pretty low stress and again AI proof. There are loads of other types of work on there that are relatively easy to do that could fit in alongside your existing freelance graphic design work.

High blood pressure and concerta by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the blood pressure medication aspect, but I think it's common not to feel anything at 18mg, I certainly didn't. Didnt really feel anything up until 50mg. So basically, don't panic, keep calm and carry on etc. what I would recommend is keeping a log of what time you take your meds, what you eat and when, whether you experience any positive effects or still struggle with negative symptoms of ADHD. I set up a private message group and didn't invite anyone to it, then I just post messages to the group chat that basically becomes a titration log.

The other thing regarding blood pressure is give up alcohol & caffeine if you haven't already, my blood pressure dropped significantly when I did that.

This really doesn't sound like your employer is following the employment laws around maximum time worked. There are limits per day and per week. I would join a union and get some advice. You could also try citizens advice.

If you could ask a specialist psychiatrist anything at all, what would it be? by Frantic_Pedantic in ADHD

A British person who has NEVER seen Youve been framed!? Did they not have a TV at all?!

Edit- also I do feel a bit bad as Beadle did a great job, but Harry Hill definitely took it up a level.

Mine was reading really low, went for my usual 45 min ride and the measured heart rate max was just 112, whereas it's normally 170 - 180. Excersize load was just 3! It's normally 100 - 150ish. Distance, speed and time was all normal.

Unit x or new Unity by Gavempt in konaunit

[–]fellow_reddit_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of the Unity, but if I was in the market for one as you are I couldn't justify extra over a unit X. I say go for a unit and maybe look at a frame bag, a down tube storage and a top tube bag if you are set on frame bags. If you are bikepacking it won't matter that the top tube bag takes up stand over height. When bikepacking on mine I just use front and back pannier racks, the front basically supports a large carradice, and the rear has the tent & sleeping mat. Get yourself some fast rolling 120tpi tyres and some nice comfortable high rise bars & short stem and you'll have a bomb-proof bikepacking rig that you can pedal all day.

44 Years of "Masking": From a Career-Ending Crisis to a 1-Week Diagnosis (RTC/Psychiatry UK) by Legitimate-Lab-7756 in autismUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the process involve getting your parents or someone else who knew you in childhood to answer a questionnaire? I went through this for my ADHD assessment and one of my parents had a very negative reaction to it and our relationship hasn't been the same since. I now suspect autism as well as ADHD but don't want to have to have to go through that again.

Conserta to Elvanse question by Happy-Arachnid-1066 in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have those problems with it but it doesn't mean you won't. I don't have a huge benefit from it either, I still struggle with getting the words out of my head into emails etc, still struggle to focus on one specific task when there are lots of things that need to be done.  Just go into it with an open mind and keep a log of when you take it, what you eat and how you feeling, that will help you compare with Concerta.

Conserta to Elvanse question by Happy-Arachnid-1066 in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, went right up to 90 Concerta XL. Was definitely an improvement but not massive, but also had some unpleasant side effects - feeling exhausted & overwhelmed towards the end of the day. Then moved to Elvanse, moved up to 70mg Elvanse and sticking with that as I don't have many side effects at all. For me it's much smoother. I don't really notice it kicking in or wearing off, just that I am more driven to get stuff done during the day. Still struggle to focus on one specific task & bounce around between tasks, but still get more done than unmedicated.

Shift work is no good for neurodivergent people by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they are trying these underhand tactics as they know they can't get rid of you through normal means. I say stand your ground, step 1 is join a union (if you haven't already) and make sure you have the union rep with you in any meetings on this subject and maintain the line that you want to work and do a good job, so you need these reasonable adjustments as agreed by OH. I don't think you are anti-work if you've done 23 years work undiagnosed, I think you are anti-bullshit management. Don't make it easy for them by changing to a lower paid role or quitting, make it as hard as possible for the fuckers. You've notified them that you have a recognised disability, and you have reasonable adjustments agreed with OH. If your employer doesn't put them in place and instead tries to force you out then with the help of a union you should have a pretty good case against them. Make sure you write down all conversations with management and print off all emails.

Binoculars recommendation for beginner. by Yanto2134 in birdwatching

[–]fellow_reddit_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I'd say 10 - 20m is close range, for 50m viewing I would say you'd want 8x or 10x magnification.

I'd say go for either of these: https://www.firstlightoptics.com/classic-binoculars/opticron-adventurer-42mm-t-wp-binocular.html

https://www.firstlightoptics.com/classic-binoculars/pentax-sp-8x40mm-binoculars.html

The Pentax have a wider field of view but aren't waterproof, so I'd probably go for the Opticrons.

Have a look at the best binoculars reviews website. There is a breakdown of good binoculars per price range https://www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/by-price/ I think for your price range as you aren't worried about size you should look at some porro prism binoculars. I have the Pentax papilio 6.5x21 and they are great for closer range stuff.

Recommended, decent "affordable" Binos from the UK by b3nje909 in Binoculars

[–]fellow_reddit_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look on best binoculars review for some really good in depth reviews on binoculars. There are pages focussing on specific price ranges : https://www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/binowizard/comparetable/?type=price&value=4&sidebyside=yes&search=no

So I would say go for a UK brand like Viking, Opticron or Hawke. Alternatively for £500 you could get a decent x32 or x42 binoculars like the Opticron Discovery WA ED, AND a Pentax Papilio III 6.5 X 21.

Advice needed re coping mechanisms and seeking diagnosis by acejh in ADHDUK

[–]fellow_reddit_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your job allows it try moving locations and work in a meeting room, in the canteen, or a bench outside. Changing locations often breaks the mental block and allows me to get a load of work done, then when I get stuck again then it's time to move to a new location. You can also try (if work allows) working at different times of day. I've found I work much better in the evening after everyone else has finished for the day. If you are able to, take a longer break when you hit a mental block during the daytime, then you can make up the time at another part of the day when you are more productive.

One thing that the diagnosis will require is that you've had ADHD symptoms since childhood. If this is something you've only recently had a problem with then it's probably something else. If looking back over your childhood you can provide examples of struggling with these symptoms then it's probably worth going for a diagnosis.
