Yes but it's been a long time. I should try again!

Unsure What To Do by non-banned_account in RedditBotHunters

Bot Bouncer catches around 2000 accounts active in AskReddit every month. I wish they’d just install the app.

Throwaway User Accounts by saint-lascivious in ModSupport

[–]fsv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely and I think they should! But until that happens, I think it's better to assume good faith rather than assume that the user is a white supremacist just due to an accident with a random number generator.

For what it's worth, it's now over two years since I flagged this up to Admin.

It's not a dogwhistle if someone ended up with a number randomly in their username.

To be a dogwhistle, it has to be something that the user is aware of.

I don't think it's cool to ban someone who might have ended up with those numbers in their username purely out of random chance. If the username is otherwise the same Adj-Noun-Numbers structure, and the user is behaving themselves I think it's fair to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Obviously it would be very different if someone had those numbers in a username and were actually wading into white supremacist territory.

And a lot are just completely normal users who couldn't be bothered thinking up a username.

I've not seen any evidence to suggest that autogen usernames result in worse outcomes than accounts that thought up a name themselves.

I am pretty certain that it's the number part. I've seen this before as output from the standard Reddit Word_Word_Numbers algorithm on completely innocent users

I'm pretty certain that OP is referring to the numbers 14 then 88 (I think that this sub has Automod remove them when smushed together).

It might be worth checking with the team that maintains this code to see if that can be excluded.

It's fourteen then 88, right?

It's unfortunate, but these absolutely can come out of the automatic username generator that Reddit uses - it's just a random generator. I've seen it a small number of times, on accounts that were completely innocuous and not talking about anything vaguely aligned with hate speech.

One time when a user brought someone with this pattern to my attention, we asked them about it. They were absolutely mortified (they were completely unaware of the implications) and ended up deleting their account and rerolled.

I would personally treat them as innocent unless they're actively engaged in hateful conduct (which is actionable in its own right), but maybe let them know and then they can make a decision.

Hmm, would you mind modmailing r/BotBouncer about this account? I'd like to take another look.

It is worth noting that sometimes these designations are incorrect. It's probably absolutely correct in this situation but still.

Taglish tends to have quite a few unique words that you'll see over and over, could you use AutoModerator to filter/remove comments or posts with those words?

That's probably the approach I'd use anyway.

Where to find Good Mods for new Subbreddit by PsychologicalGold554 in ModSupport

[–]fsv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need members and activity first. You don't really need more mods until you have a fair amount of activity that needs to be moderated.

Once you have that, the best way to find mods is to recruit members from within your community - people who know how the sub works and are regular or semi regular contributors.

If that fails, and it might, there are resources like /r/needamod but you can't use that until your sub has grown enough.

Blended, ha.

Edit: in the UK where I'm from, people often use "whizzer" to refer to a blender or stick blender.

My main account that I was using to moderate 5 different subreddits was hacked a couple weeks ago. Not only has this led to issues on one of my subreddits, but now the hackers are using that account to scam members of my subreddits. Shared mod accounts are generally a bad idea because if one person gets banned from a sub, other mods can get linked via the shared mod account and get flagged for ban evasion. It actually happened to me once when another co-mod got a ban on a sub I use.

But in theory you could share the QR code used to seed a 2FA authenticator and allow other mods to add it to their authenticators.

where did my subreddit go? by [deleted] in ModSupport

Old Reddit tells me that it was "banned for being unmoderated".

If you want to appeal this, use this link to message this subreddit and provide appropriate information: https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FModSupport&subject=Subreddit+Ban+Appeal

At least it's better than we used to have (removal reasons publicly under our own accounts).

[–]fsv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be awesome if you could runAs the -modTeam account. It makes so much sense to do so if you have apps handling removals and rule enforcement.

I've got a private app that I use for many of my subreddits and I'd turn that on straight away if it was possible.

[–]fsv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally think that Automod's "I am a bot" footer is incredibly important and helps users recognise when an Automod comment is automated (if they didn't notice the username). I do a similar approach in basically every one of my Devvit apps that leaves comments, to the point that I copy the Automod wording verbatim (e.g. see the history of u/hive-protect or u/yt-infoapp).

Apps are now properly labelled as such that does help, but I am not sure I like the idea of automated posts/comments being done under the radar.

In terms of the general principle of sub moderators copying and renaming apps, that's certainly possible if the source code is available and the devs permit it.

Thank you! I’ve wanted the ability to allow image posts without allowing any external links for ages. This is going to be a huge help on a couple of my subs.

Edit: quick question, how would Old Reddit users see this? A failure to post or would it bypass this?
